If I do the same stupid method on 4/7/1997 the bottom 10 teams had their losing streaks added together for 45 games

The reason it ended was cuz the spurs beat the nuggets in a tank off

Like the reason the grizzlies were tanking then is cuz they sucked.

Unethical tanking makes the beginning of the season so much more exciting because this year the only team that planned on losing was the Jazz. Sure teams are tanking now but that’s because they realized they weren’t doing anything. The Jazz, wizards, kings, pelicans, pacers and wizards (5 of the bottom 6 teams) all have recent all stars on there roster and everyone but the pelicans and kings have multiple recent all stars. Like this means that teams are coming in ready to compete which makes the league better then those middle of the road team.

My proof that fans actually appreciate unethical tanking, you are a spurs fan, I’m sure you really appreciated every loss in 2023.

Bulls fans clamour for a tank instead of being the perennial 10 seed, pacers fans are deeply scared of a win.

Yeah, the reason why we were perpetually bad was because we refused to bottom out, so we hovered in the 30 win range every year. We were doomed to pick 7th for several years in a row and never found that top end talent.

But also… when we moved up in the draft, we didn’t pick the top end talents…

Or when top-end talent falls into our lap at 12, we trade them away early.

So all that to say is we’ve been in a hell of our own making for a long time.

None of the losing streaks are currently crazy. A team losing 2 or 3 or 4 in a row in a season is pretty normal. Throw in that they were the bad teams anyway, and it’s even more likely.

First off, it should be obvious that worse teams have stretches of losing more often. If you want to argue that more teams are intentionally losing this year vs other years, you should compare the winning percentage of the bottom 10 teams this season vs past seasons.

Secondly, the way that you’re calculating losing streaks makes little sense. A more honest approach would be “record over the last 5 games” and seeing if anything interesting appears in the data there.

Tanking isn’t the problem we’re being told it is. Utah, Portland, Sacramento, Brooklyn fans - correct me if I’m wrong but there’s fun to be had in watching teams try to develop young talent. Honestly the big issue is the gap in talent driven by teams who have successfully tanked. Pistons, Celtics, Thunder, Spurs are all teams built via a strong tank. Cade+Duren+Ausar are tank products. Brown and Tatum are tank products. Pretty much all of OKC is a tank product. Wemby+Castle+Harper+Vassell are tank prducts.

Not sure why Silver is surprised that every team is trying to copy the success of the top teams in the league. OKC’s bench would easily beat the Kings. Just a massive talent gap driven by the way rookie contracts fit into cap space.

Maybe more telling is the last time any of the tanking teams (the 8 that have their own pick) beat a team outside of those bottom ten. The most recent is the Pacers beating the Knicks on Feb 10.

The longest time ago for any team to beat a non-tanking opponent is the Nets beating the Nuggets on Jan 4.

On average, 36 days is the amount of time since these teams beat anyone other than each other.

I guess I don’t think losses are a particularly good indicator of tanking or not. It’s competition, someone has to lose every game. There have been dogshit teams forever. Are they trying hard? Are the games competitive? Are the players developing? Are coaches learning something about it their rosters?
