It’s kind of crazy that our team legitimately went from playing horrendously to actually playing well. Like the 6-21 wasn’t some fluke. We straight up looked like one of the worst teams in the league.

That being said, I think people kind of overstated how much worse we got. Zu just looked okay this season, and we still looked good when he missed games due to injury because BroLo is a very serviceable starter (as opposed to him being a pretty bad backup). Yanic (RIP my guy) also looked really solid as a backup with more and more run.

Harden was obviously excellent for us, but his departure allowed other guys to really step up. Mathurin has been a well needed bucket getter for us off the bench, Garland just started but is shaking off the rust decently well, and our team is able to lean into a faster pace with more intensity utilizing our young guys + DJJ/Dunn.

LAC has a pretty interesting roster, though definitely took a big hit with Yanic going down.

Kawhi basically being given the full keys to the offense just has him playing so damn aggressively, and it’s nice to see. BroLo is looking like a solid enough C as a starter (as opposed to coming off the bench). DJJ/Dunn are just nightmares for opposing offenses, and even when their offense drags, they still make great things happen.

But Mathurin/Garland are such exciting adds. Mathurin definitely has his flaws, but the talent is very apparent. He manages to be a plus player even when he goes full tunnel vision, but man, when he actually plays team basketball, things just look easy out there for him. Garland adds amazing pace, facilitation, and off ball movement. He gets picked on defensively due to his size, but he competes out there and is still in the right places, which is good.

Even then, the Pacers will be a bottom 3 team, basically confirmed. Each bottom 3 team had a 48% chance at falling out of the top 4. The 4th best lottery odds have a 52% chance to fall out of the top 4

You never really know this (considering guys like SGA never were seen to have MVP / All NBA potential and so went in the 10+ range), but I kind of think that ceiling wise, 5-⁷⁄₈ is kind of all similar?

The consensus is Tier 1 (1-3) and Tier 2 (Wilson #4). Then you have Flemings as the next guy, but ceiling wise I think you can argue that Mikel, Wagler, Acuff, and maybe Ament have an equally high ceiling. Those guys all have a lower flaw due to some more obvious weakness, but they all have some tantalizing skillset.

The margins are close enough that the Pacers could theoretically still find themselves in 4th (maybe 5th but highly unlikely). If that’s the case, the difference in odds for LAC keeping the pick in 1-3 vs 4 is only 4% (47.9% vs. 51.9%). Really doesn’t matter all that much, and I don’t think LAC is going to be thinking: “Damn if the Pacers just rose to 4th, we would have had it!”

At that point, LAC may as well just root for the Pacers to be the worst team in the league because it doesn’t improve the Pacers odds of winning it all, but it improves LAC’s chances at getting a better pick. For example, if the Pacers finish in last place, then either the Pacers keep it or LAC is guaranteed the 5th pick.
