Paolo has had a slightly more efficient career to date. & he’s a year younger

i think people really aren’t talking about how bad the lack of efficiency is gonna be in the playoffs, when someone needs to hit the tough go ahead makes he might struggle if he’s still at a low 56 TS%

The thing is Cade runs an offense at a higher level from a strict net rating perspective than Paolo does. With Cade on the court this year the Pistons have a 120.7 offensive rating. Paolo has the Magic at 114.0.

For comparison, Jokic is 126.8, Shai is 122.4 Luka is 121.6 and Donavan Mitchell is 123.

Cade also has teammates who everyone knows are dreadful offensively so getting to 120.7 is genuinely impressive imo

Paolo is also a 6’10 bruiser while Cade is a 6’6 guard. Of course Paolo should be more efficient

With that being said, the criticisms this year are fully valid. Paolo:

• is a power forward who plays in the paint so it’s foolish to compare his efficiency to Cade’s 1:1
• is surrounded by far better offensive help - Cade has to create everything on the perimeter and Paolo has Wagner/Bane and great playmaking from Suggs/Black
• has a smaller workload so he should be more efficient
• provides zero defense or playmaking, Cade is elite in both
• his team is vastly underperforming this season while Cade and the Pistons are taking the leap that Orlando expected
• his teams offensive performance, overall performance, and record is consistently worse when he’s playing

Last but not least, he’s fucking 6’10” and 250 pounds. What is OP even trying to do here? We’re comparing his scoring efficiency to a point guard and supposed to be wowed by his career high 56% TS from a #1 overall pick big man?

It’s simultaneously true that the more efficient you are is better for the team and makes you a better player but you can still be inefficient and be an impactful player who helps the team while you’re out there

Fuck, we’ve gone so far on efficiency that we’re ignoring volume. Cade is very very slightly less efficient than Paulo while scoring about 3 more PPG, that doesn’t seem like that much, but it’s like 17% of Paolo’s scoring.

The Pistons are frauds any time they lost their most recent game/Cade played poorly. Any time we win Cade should be MVP and JB is the best coach of all time

A sizeable portion of this sub doesn’t watch games. The only way for them to tell if one player is better than another is to look at two numbers and figure out which one is bigger.

Well you see, the less I read and thinking i do, the more time I have to form opinions. And that’s what everyone on reddit wants to hear, my opinion. So why read posts and watch games and formulate thoughts when I can just make endless opinions instead?

People always like to hate but there is some discussion worth having here. Does Paolo suck? No but it looks less likely that he’ll be worth his extension. He’s probably an All Star level player who pays like a superstar for a small stretch. 

Does Cade suck? Definitely not but his efficiency means that he’s closer to a top 10ish player than a top 5 guy and is an uphill climb to get there.

Cade is in the honeymoon phase of becoming a superstar.

Still on the rise and hasn’t had enough success to become hated yet, despite his flaws.

Cade is still a way more impactful player

Hard to hate a player whose team is first in the East when no one expected that team to be there to begin with. 

I mean, you can honestly only hate Cade if you never watch him. He was 2nd in the league in WAR gained in February only behind Wemby. His efficiency isn’t that high, but every single metric aside from that shows him as a positive.

And then on top of that, if you actually watch a game you see that he’s the vast majority of why we are the best team in the East.

There’s two elements to this post

Cades inefficiency doesn’t get attention because the Pistons are winning anyway and there isn’t much scoring around him. He needs to become a lot better at creating rim pressure to help his FT rate and create easy points if he wants to elevate his game

Cade is also a much better playmaker than Paolo, which means he can play well while shooting somewhat average

One of the most overlooked aspects of Paolo’s game is that he is one of the worst offensive rebounders (for his size) in the league.

His OREB rate of 3.6% ranks dead last for players 6’10 or taller that aren’t primarily stretch bigs on offence. It’s lower than 6’1 suns guard Colin Gillespie.

His team does so much better in the possession battle when he’s off the floor, which is defo one of the reasons his on off is always so ass

Paolo’s defense has also taken a significant step forward this season.

I mean Cade is playing better defense, a better passer, scoring 3 more ppg, and leading his team to a 45-15 record. You can’t as a forward not play solid defense and not score efficiently even if you’re good at everything else if you want to lead a team. Even r/magic was dogging him before his recent stretch.

You are supposed to take that the Paolo hate, while some of it valid, has gone a little too far.

basketball is a game about relative scoring efficiency. You either need to be more efficient relative to your opponent over roughly the same number of possessions, or else slightly less efficient while creating a larger number of possessions than your opponent.

Since true shooting percentage is a very good barometer of individual scoring efficiency, you will be hearing about true shooting percentage as long as you are interested in basketball.

Nah im pretty sure it was his bad efficiency (which is still below average).

I think it’s also because Paolo’s only skill that’s good is the ability to score at volume, he’s not a good defender, doesn’t rebound that well for his size and position and his playmaking isn’t really that good to make up for his flaws even if he’s better than average for a PF. So when your only good skill is the ability to score at volume and you aren’t that amazing at it to look beyond the efficiency and have the negative on/offs and everything else it’s going to be much more scrutinized.

Cade is inefficient as a scorer too but is much better at D and one of the best playmakers in the league while being a better rebounder positionally and having good on/offs. Yes there is tons of room to criticize the inefficiency but he still does much more all around when you compare the 2

Ohhh so now efficiently isn’t the end all be all. I can’t with you guys. You guys will always find a reason to hate on Paolo and always find a way to excuse other players for the same things you hate on Paolo for.

You let nuance go out the window when you excused Cade’s efficiency because of a lack of spacing and failed to give Paolo the same grace. Paolo has had poor spacing ever since the start of his career and has never played with a true point guard. His efficiency would improve massively without a clogged lane and teammates that can consistently get him the ball in good positions.

Well I hope these guys can hang out and grab a few drinks from time to time, cuz all this posts feels kinda forced and honestly a little hilarious to me.
