Coaches need to maximize that their roster offers. If you have a secondary option that has a skillset that is a bit different, you try to use that. OKC isnt running DHO for SGA, its mostly to help the role players offense

But the sixers needed guard scoring outside of Maxey.

I think Philly would have been wise to use playcalling to get their young guard going, knowing that a confident Jared McCain is an important piece for the future, for playoff runs, to step up if Maxey ever goes out, etc.

Also have tall playmakers where McCain being a 6’2 SG isn’t a problem. If anything he’s low-key like a better Tre Mann with what he can do as a scorer

In theory this makes McCain easier to plug in with OKC but at the same time Shai, Dub, Topic (and Mitchell) have barely played with him. Maxey is also a much better defender than what his size suggests. VJ is a rookie but the tools are there to be a great defender. Grimes is not a good defender but has more size and I think the Sixers shouldn’t really make serious personnel decisions based on that. Scheme is the more important factor and yes, iHart and JWill are excellent DHO players, but they have been consistently empowered, as has virtually every backup OKC guard or wing. Freaking Kenrich Williams is allowed to run pick and rolls. The Sixers are not winning anything this year, it makes no sense to play Maxey as much as they do and to rely on starters as much as they do. Play him 34 minutes (instead of 38.5!!), play VJ 31-32 (instead of 35.1 - insane workload for a rookie), even Grimes is almost at 30 minutes. Play and empower McCain more with the ball, I think the excuse that they have enough guard depth or they can’t fit enough small guards falls apart when Cam Payne of all people is the backup point guard and Maxey is ran to the ground. Anyways, not even a Sixers fan, just such bad process and roster management by the coaching staff.

Yeah exactly. I don’t think I’d go as far as to say Nurse is a bad coach but it’s notable how instead of modifying the scheme to try and maximize the non stars and issues with not having great PG depth with guys in and out of the lineup, he leans even more on Maxey. There’s a reason why Pascal and Fred had crazy high minute loads with him as the HC and on the flip side youth development kinda stagnated under him after the pipeline of guys who were already developing dried up. Of course guys like VJ and Scottie were good enough to break out right away and play but I’m talking more other guys who have some talent but need more run and integration into the schemes to help them along

It seemed like you were citing “talent over fit” as a common draft mistake. In reality though, it can also be a pragmatic strategy. As you get further into the draft, its harder and harder to find a “fit” with the baseline talent level required to succeed in the league. In that case, it absolutely makes sense to draft “talent”.

Once youre out of the lottery, finding a player with real NBA value is an objective win.. even if the fit is poor and the player ends up making more sense as a trade asset down the line
