The ‘90s Night broadcast introduction from NBC and Peacock, featuring Bob Costas, Doug Collins, and Mike Fratello, for the San Antonio Spurs vs. Philadelphia 76ers game.
I really love that NBC embraced this stuff when they got the NBA back.
Some people with a lot of influence are true fans. Or did their research on what we fucking want.
Ba ba ba ba ba basketball
Gimme gimme gimme the ball because I’m gonna dunk it!
Could we hear it without the lyrics?
It’s a lyric driven song
Dave’s poems are always popping
Roundball Rock
YEAH!
I hate that they’ve suckered me into loving it this much
millenials are an incredibly nostalgic generation and now theyre taking over executive decision making positions
Old people are nostalgic. Welcome to the death of your youth, millenios.
We’re trying to remember what it was like when we were living in precedented times, cause it’s been 25 years of the unprecedented at this point.
Bill Clinton played saxophone on Arsenio and everyone was like, this is unprecedented.
Everything has gone to shit but randomly nba presentation and sports editing is peak.
Just NBC’s really.
Well Amazon’s isn’t bad. But ESPN’s continues to be fucking terrible.
Amazon’s picture quality and sound production is incredibly good. Give em a Emmy, seriously. Their broadcast is crisper than McDonald’s sprite
the halftime squad is great too. i could listen to nash, dirk and blake griffin talk ball all day long. udonis is great too and taylor rooks is a good host
Blake griffin was grown in a lab to be a spokesperson/commentator
Yeah Amazon has been phenomenal, and the cast is just down to earth guys. Shockingly competent, also the commentators are great and the stuff they do on the bench and stuff is great
If you have a good multi channel surround sound system the audio is incredibly immersive
ong you gotta have great analysis to actually get me to listen when taylor rooks is on my screen
Get off the burner John
ESPN really has done damage to the NBA brand.
ESPN at this point does damage to sports.
I think you are right
They gave the people what they wanted. Crazy concept.
Now they need to just go ahead and play it for every game, and then if there’s ever a game on April Fools to play the far superior version with lyrics.
It’s amazing too as some milestones happened last night.
The guys who covered the NBA in the 90s did the throwback and there was the moment they interviewed Dylan Harper telling him that it’s full circle as they got to interview him and his dad at a time.
Now if only that Spurs/Knicks game was more competitive. That way the announcers didn’t have to go on a deep nostalgia trip
It should just look like this all the time all our current sports broadcast packages are so boring and lifeless
It sure as hell beats the ESPN and Paramount “hey we bought the rights to everything and our product is garbage. fuck you.” strategy
Such a good game….
The song is iconic.
Guys will see this and say “hell yeah”
Hell yeah
hell yeah
Yell heah
Give me a hell yeah (Austin 3:16)
I got two words for ya!
Must see tv?
Yes those
And then go “Ow, my back”
(Source: Me)
Can I get a Hell yea
Hell yeah!
HECK YEAH
these guys are sooo much better than the espn clown show.
Its crazy how in just 6 months prime and nbc have exceeded espn in nba coverage, i hope nbc gets the nba finals again.
People complain that games are on so many channels/services but I think it’s great. Maybe they will drive each other to be better.
It’s nice because teams that don’t get a lot of coverage like the kings actually have some nationally televised games
This happened over in NASCAR last year. Prime came in and wiped the floor with some of the other networks. Everybody seems to have woken up.
Competition results in a better product
I don’t mind them being on so many channels. I mind the exclusivity that makes it so I need 5 subscriptions to (legally) watch all of my team’s games.
NBC and prime have been fantastic
I get your point but its also a very accessible streaming service and a national broadcast company vs a cable channel. Probably other reasons why they out perform than the quality of the broadcast.
ESPN used to be by far the best sports production crew on the planet.
Their hype and coverage of the 08-16 Finals were genuinely fantastic. Ever since they started clearing house around the time they got rid of BS, it’s been so, so, so much worse.
Current ESPN would never make Grantland or 30 for 30. This is not an org that prides itself on Sports coverage or Sports media.
ESPN pays Kendrick Perkins money to share his basketball insight with us. This should tell you what they think of their viewers.
Agreed
Just let them run the whole NBA, kick out Adam Sliver and let them run it all.
You know that Ratatouille gif where the food critic is taken back to his childhood with the bite? Thats what watching this felt like
Agreed. NBC & Amazon are cooking hard
i had chills. i woulda done the vince mcmahon thing if Marv Albert showed up
Fantastic callback
I almost got teary eyed
Inject this in my bootyhole.
It’s quite spacious in there, anything else you want injected while we’re at it?
This please.
Fuuuuuck yeah bro
If WW3 is really going down, I want to go out with this wave of nostalgia
What a success of a theme song.
If it just had some lyrics to go with it..
B A S K E T B A LLL baaasket ball basket ball b ball
Gimme gimme
its a lyrics-first song, really
John and Dave Tesh had some great lyrics. Unfortunately, NBC only wanted the instrumental from John.
idk if that was /s, but here you go
Best I can do.
https://youtu.be/m0k54qJuLww
I wonder what a sports theme song tournament bracket would look like. Let’s just skip to the final four. This is the number one seed, I think Fox NFL is in the final four personally. I don’t know if I have anything else yet. Maybe CBS NCAA basketball?
We peaked as a civilization in the 90s. It’s known.
You might be right. God damn I miss the 90s
I think the biggest difference is that we don’t really use our imagination muscles as much since that space is occupied by a device at all times. I’m guilty of it. I miss that feeling of being happy without the need of something electronic in my hands.
Alas I have to be prepared for that text, email, Teams message & IG notification while I scroll NBA content to distract myself from current events.
Anyways. I’m going to go play some Balatro.
I’ve been forcing myself to read for at least 30 mins before bed. Even if it’s the YA novels I used to read as a kid. It beats screen time and helps me sleep better.
as a 90s kid I agree. I just wonder if other decades’ kids feel the same way about their decade. I can believe it for say the 80s or 60s, but what about the 00s or 10s?
My cousin was born in ‘06 and his gen is currently on a nostalgia wave for 2016. I think everyone pines for their childhood. And there’s something unique about growing up in every decade, but the 90s really seemed like the sweet spot. I’m obviously biased, though.
I feel the same about the 00s
early 10s weren’t that bad imo
but yeah the 90s might have been peak
last 10 years have been ridiculous
Even Morpheus knew it
Holy shit that’s fire
Babababababasketball gimme gimme gimme the ball because I’m gonna dunk it
DUNK IT! 🫸🏼🫷🏼
WOOOO! 🫸🫷
NBC is s tier production
They just said Marv Albert and Ahmad Rashad will be joining them later in the season so this won’t be the last time we get a throwback broadcast. Making me feel like a kid again…
Just keep Marv on a limited capacity if they do another throwback night. He was rough in his final TNT years and nothing from the cold open he did earlier this season has changed my opinion he’s not good for TV anymore.
They’re all relatively aged but still have some ability . Maybe do it for a half or quarter ?
Amazing how so many things in this life are merely reproductions from the past and yet none of the new generation of play-by-play commentators and analysts seem to have the same level of gravitas for the NBA. I honestly don’t get it. Austin Rivers and many others are so bad doing color.
Noah Eagle seems to have “it”
Like father like son.
Noah Eagle is good for sure 👍
Costas talking about free throws in 1972 in Munich and now they are discussing how they miss Marv Albert. Still better than Doris and team.
i miss Bill Walton. His commentary was crazy but he was fun to listen to
Bill Walton, Tom Hammond, Steve ‘Snapper’ Jones (RIP), Matt Goukas. Memories of NBA on NBC playoffs.
Bill Walton didn’t start with the crazy commentary until, when, the 2010s? The earliest one I can remember is when he compared Boris Diaw to Beethoven.
Back in the 90s he played it straight and complained whenever the players made a mistake.
He was still a little off the walls in the 90’s, in comparison to other commentators, wasn’t he? That’s how I remember him with my eroding memories of the past.
Walton was always like that
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3tZC_gzevw
The more I learned about the game over the years, the more I realized Bill Walton’s commentary was really clever/insightful. He created the nickname “Fabulous” Fabricio for Fabricio Oberto, a player that most people probably won’t even remember, that still draws a chuckle out of me when I think of it. Walton was an underappreciated color guy.
And a very insightful man with a unique history. Miss that old hippie..
Loved Bill
THROW IT DOWN
Maybe I’m just nostalgic but that gave me goosebumps
Using that dead man’s voice is so ghoulish.
Definitely missing Jim Fagan’s cadence and mannerisms because this AI version is just “him” reading off the prompt.
When he was still alive, he’d do it like: “This… is the NBA… on NBC.”
Its beautiful. I want it permanently
This is fire
This is what millennials grew up with. Gets me hyped up every time. 90s basketball was the shit.
can we keep this?
Absolutely fire. Never should be changed.
Classic
Mike fratello is the goat
This is the feeling and tone that the NBA needs to chase. It’s a blowout right now and it still feels of value to stay tuned-in.
ESPN broadcasts cant find the grave soon enough.
ESPN could never!
So thankful I came up in this era, I know it’s throwback night but man I really felt the 90’s all they needed were starter jackets and coaches with suits on
Why can’t this crew call the finals?!
Because espn has the contract to call the finals.
absolute cinema
I’m in love
Three million dollars is waiting for them to reissue the early 90s windbreakers.
This is amazing. I know he is retired, but having Marv Albert on this call would have completed it
I ALSO HOPE THEY HAVE A PLAYER OF THE GAME AND DONATION TO THE THURGOOD MARSHALL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
That was awesome lmao
i love everything about this
i wasn’t alive back then so i can’t even call this nostalgia. it just looks better than anything we have today
Holy chills. So good
There is absolutely NO REASON this cannot be the standard production for NBA on NBC moving forward.
It just works. No need to change perfection.
I didn’t watch the old broadcasts but seeing this is just so fun.
The GOAT NBA theme song.
I was watching the game and wondered why it looked so old school lol
I used to pray for times like this
Can we just go back to the 90s in general?
Inject this into my veins
AND THEY GOT JIM GRAY, HANNAH STORM, PJ CARLESIMO AND ISIAH THOMAS.
But no Embiid.
Nostalgia. Too bad the game sucks
Right?! Lol
This has been awesome tbh. Reminds me of being a kid growing up watching games
This broadcast kicked ass, almost as much ass as the spurs did tonight.
NBC is crushing it.
This is just so damn beautiful.
Watching the game right now, the score and the graphics are perfect. They’re big but not very distracting and very readable and simple.
Even using the old school NBC graphics. Score and game clock but no shot clock. It’s fantastic!
Wish they brought back the font from the 2000’s
This top fucking tier. God damn. Watching the NBA on NBC on Sundays was truly unmatched.
Takes me back 30 years. That intro is the NBA to me.
i love this so much
this has been great.
Hannah Storm has not only long ties to NBC (both as an announcer herself and through her husband Dan Hicks) but also to pro basketball. Her father, Mike Storen, was an Indiana Pacers and Kentucky Colonels executive during their early ABA days and was later the ABA Commissioner.
This was everything. S tier broadcast.
This makes me so giddy
Damn I love this. Let Goo!
I wasn’t even watching the NBA in the 90s, but that intro made me shed tears. The intro music is so iconic. Playoff vibes
Nostalgia is a powerful thing
Beautiful
B-b-b-b-b-basketball
Brings me back to being a teenager and watching the NBA in the 90s. So fun.
If only us League Pass peasants were privileged enough to watch.
Ba ba ba ba ba basketball!
I thought the 76ers were named after the highway.
I76 was available (along with I72) and the highway is south of I78 and I80, so the local officials asked for I76. 76ers were explicitly named after 1776
B-b-b-b-ba-basketball!
Now they just need to try broadcasting a game in the vintage 4:3 aspect ratio. So more like a square we see in old 90s highlights. I think it just works better for basketball. And it would even be high def 4:3 now
10⁄10
please also bring back Hubie Brown. Also Hannah Storm for the Prudential halftime report
Feels so right
Can someone tell them to stop talking while there’s an announcement from the officials?
They fucked with the color, right? I’m not going crazy?
https://youtu.be/V_h7Lm7C9Nk?si=wjR-TN0byflLqUCe
NBC and Amazon have both been great. I’m excited for the playoffs.
When it was a great product. Miss those days
Bob looks great. He could still be doing this?
If anyone wants to see the best fan-made recreation of the extended 1990s NBA on NBC intro, here you go
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSlQXXBP7mc
fucking. beautiful.
Love the retro vibe to the broadcast tonight. Keep that shit going all the time, it has literally made my watching basketball experience better tonight
Damn that nostalgia really hit me when I saw this.
god wish the graphics package stayed like this, feels less soulless
b-b-b-b-b-basketball gimmie gimmie gimmie the ball because i’m gonna DUNK IT
It was soooo sick!!
Glad to see the graphics department being able to flex a little bit
Gave me chills!
This was great
I lived for NBA Inside Stuff. I’d come in from shooting in the driveway just to watch it, then I’d go back out and try and pull off all the cool moves I had just watched.
That era of NBA had a must-watch game every day of the season (most of them were Bulls games to be fair.) People who didn’t really care about sports watched basketball then.
Im mad that I missed this.
Best sports coverage ever
I could watch this a hundred times. Already like 7 deep 🔥
I thought this was a 1990’s game until I saw the arena name.
Good content
This is awesome!
I didn’t even grow up with this theme yet I still get chills every time I hear it.
Another NBC W. I hope they do this more often!
