[All-Access] “I never heard a player say that they just want to play defense in 1-on-1.” Tyrese Maxey recalls a moment about Victor Wembanyama from a 2022 training session.
This dude is just a ball of positivity. Philly, don’t break this man.
Yeah Maxey has such good vibes lol
We don’t deserve him. But we love him.
After Ben and Kelle we deserve him GTFO.
So glad to have him and VJ
Still don’t understand trading McCain. Another wholesome dude.
Yeah it hurt me too…I think it will be better for McCain in the long run tbh. Glad he’s getting minutes.
There’s so many likeable young players out right now I think the league might be in good hands going forwards
Hey LeBron, we’re good. We got Ben Simmons Tyrese Maxey
Very true! Wemby and Tyrese are great for the league and they have plenty of company.
Yeah. League is good in my hands.
Have you seen what they did to Santa Claus man?
Y’all constantly bringing this jawn up from the grave of ‘68 like you were alive to see it lmao. Most of you weren’t even a twinkle in your parent’s eye, assuming they even existed yet.
What about the robot?
Now that’s some contemporary philly lore I can get behind. Hitchbot had it coming, we did what we had to do. Scientists estimate that little maneuver delayed the AI takeover by at least 2 years.
We don’t take kindly to clankers
The real fruits of the process. We love that boy
Wemby: I’m 7’5 you are 6’2… playing offense on 1 on 1 doesn’t really serves me any practice
Doesn’t Wemby sometimes struggle against smaller, physical guards? They’re allowed to play him very physical and push him around, he could use the practice
You are describing an isoball situation in a real game, where teammates are nearby and ready to help / double / switch.
Complete 1 on 1 like this are quite different
Yeah pretty much this.
Back in Victor’s rookie year, a lot of talk was made about how Victor was well defended by Dillon Brooks, and while Brooks does play great defense on Victor, it’s not just Brooks’ 1 on 1 defense that disrupted him, it was the lingering help defense from the big (that would’ve typically been guarding Wemby) that made that type of defense so effective.
OKC does this so well too. Caruso gets assigned Victor and if Vic is able to back him down then he has to now deal with Caruso and Chet coming for the help defense in the paint. It’s a solid strategy
… And yet we’re 1 in 4 this season against y’all 🤣
Spurs team matches up well with OKC. Keldon and Barnes also punished Chet a lot in those games won.
I think the Spurs are just a great match-up against OKC. OKC’s entire offense is around SGA’s middy. And as good as he is, he “only” drops 40 a game at most. The rest of the points comes from occasional 3’s and paint plays. Wemby completely shuts down the paint and the Spurs perimeter defense can handle occasional 3’s. On the flip side, while the Spurs aren’t a great shooting team either, they can get the basket much better than OKC because when they’ve been practicing their drives against Wemby lol.
Where the Spurs struggle with are teams that can move the ball a lot on the perimeter and live there. Which is why they had struggled with the Suns early in the season and the Knicks recently. Wemby’s rim protection is drastically less effective if teams don’t drive in there so the Spurs play almost 4v5 on the perimeter.
We also had a shit ton of people out for a while. Like IIRC game before last we had shai, chet, caruso, Dort, Ihart, and Ajay plus the usual out. That’s like almost our entire starting line 🤣
not to mention spurs are also young and athletic that they can catch up to quick defense-offense transition of okc
but yeah as you mentioned they are vulnerable to perimeter teams, one another team is warriors where they beat spurs twice earlier this season by punishing them on perimeter with curry
Not just that but more like 6’4-6’7 broad shoulders kinda guards or wings. Not Tyrese Maxey size
This too. But in a real 1 on 1 clear court situation , wemby can eat these broad shoulder guards for breakfast too
CMB looked like our best guy vs Victor when we matched up cuz he’s so physical while being quick and having long ass arms.
Being over foot shorter than your opponent in pure 1v1 while on defense, isn’t your best bet to just take a charge?
Yeah I’d say less small guards and more burly wings. And it’s important to still note that even with that strategy teams very rarely just stick some 6’6 guy on him on an island
Usually the strategy is to put a smaller strong guy on him, have them use their strength to try to throw his Balance off, and their quickness to try to force turnovers, and then bring the double with the opposing center to hit him with a lot of length and physicality all at once and forsay contested Miss or again, a turnover
Yeah I was gonna say I don’t think Wemby struggles against small guards like Maxey that are barely 200 pounds. I feel like you have to be at least Draymond size to really bother him, and even then that assumes you’re gonna have a potential help defender as you mentioned
Yeah like if you’re short you need to be strong. Wemby may not be super strong for his size but he can post up small guards. Maybe someone like Lowry in his prime would be able to make things hard but he’s basically 1 of 1 for small PG strength
Typically 6’6 and strong or players 6’7-6’8. 6’2 players don’t stand a chance
In addition, smaller guards (especially smart ones) can abuse their inability to have a super tight handle. It’s why KD struggled a lot in one on ones against Chris Paul
Lowry was also really good at that kind of defence
Maxey doesn’t play for the Thunder though so it’s all gravy
He’s got a point though - at that height difference, working on his defensive footwork is way more valuable.
Our rookie Joan Beringer does the same thing against Ant. Might be a French big man thing.
prideful defense, he’ll grow well with Rudy too, hope Joan balls !
France football team has always had great defense. They still do.
Maybe its a mindset
Children of Maginot
National WW2 PTSD.
gahdamn i gotta imagine ant gives poor joan absolute hell 1 on 1 lmao
Pretty much
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AHYyqi-6A1M
might just be a french thing, remember they built a damn defense line around an entire fucking border with germany
That’s actually a pretty cool observation, maybe there’s something in the water over there.
Maxey seems like someone you’d enjoy having a beer with. Seems to always be smiling.
He’s got this wholesome ass commercial they play at half time for his charity which is a dog shelter. He just talks about how important dogs are and how you gotta take care of them. Love Tyrese. I had a dream Embiid kissed my forehead and tucked me in bed.
Bro threw in a fun fact lol
I love that mindset from Wemby
Honestly it reminds me of magnus playing 100(?) game against Hikaru, this benefits Wemby more than Maxy imo
I have the rodman mindset too .. mostly because I suck at shooting anything outside 10’ so I’ve learned to enjoy harassing people on defense and yelling board man gets paid.
Right? It’s refreshing to see a generational talent who genuinely gets excited about locking someone down.
People think shits sweet. Wemby if he stays healthy (god willing) is gonna DOMINATE the league for YEARS . People are gonna hate playing against him . HES ONLY 22
The fact he’s already this impactful while still figuring out the NBA game is terrifying for the rest of the league.
Funny i heard Luka said the opposite
I want to watch you practice while I eat this birthday cake all by myself?
Luka’s definitely got that offensive swagger, but I could see him saying that just to mess with someone in practice.
It’s surreal to see how much space he covers. Players have to get so precise with their timing on top of the extra arch or he just eats them up the shoot attempt
Maxey is the only reason I trust the process lol
Joan beringer is wemby confirmed
(1-1 all time defense vs ant for folks that didn’t see it)
I love this kid. He’s a labrador in human form.
Well that explains the loss last night. He was doing recon, Tyrese. Dammit.
