Not even a lil bit. I remember someone posting something like “I used to enjoy Reddit thinking it was a bunch of people sharing their expert opinions because there’s such a wide range of topics people share their opinions on, then I read opinions from the experts on something I have a strong background in and realized half of what was posted was utter bullshit”.
Now I’m not a basketball “expert” but most of these people don’t know what a front/denial is so they use other words for similar things (box out because it’s a battle for position). I’m not sure if you even combined them that 5% of this sub has shot a basketball within the last year or played on an organized team.
Happens in r/baseball a lot. You get people who love watching baseball but never played the game and don’t understand the nuances of what’s going on. But they think they do.
Because I played baseball, I’m often blown away by some of the misunderstanding that gets upvoted.
I never played basketball but I’m very aware of my limitations when it comes to not understanding the advanced concepts of play design and the like and how teams make adjustments and what a “denial” is. So I never really try to argue about the play because I don’t know what I’m really talking about.
But I know enough to know a lot of other people don’t either but think they do.
You guys should check r ufc if you want a healthy dosage of brain damage and sadness at the current state of public education in the US

A front denial isn’t a typical term used so not a lot of watchers know it since it’s a similar move with a different intention.

we know the concept, but considering some here aren’t native english speakers, I’d be a bit more tolerant if they use boxing out as a passable term.
Simple solution, use the correct term in the correct context. This just creates more confusion.
Plus the commentators are usually quick to point it out when it happens so its not even crazy to say that every fan should know the term

That’s right. Boxing out is when you get between your man and the basket to prevent them from getting the rebound. Fronting is when you get between your man and the ball to prevent an entry pass into the post.
I mean the terminology is wrong but that’s more because of context dependency. If an offensive player boxes out when posting up you call it creating a seal. A defender does it when trying to deny an entry pass and it’s called fronting (although there are different ways of doing this as well). Boxing out is just what it’s called in the context of going for a rebound.
Fronting someone involves all the elements of boxing out, it’s just not when a shot has gone up. Goddamn you’re having to really grasp to try to make yourself feel like you know more than others, aren’t you? Why are you bitching about semantics?

Everyone was saying that Jokic straight-up lay on top of him, but this clip looks like Harkless tried to front him but buckled under Jokic’s legs, and Jokic folded over him because he was trying to outposition Harkless and his momentum carried him on top of Harkless when Harkless buckled.

lowkey this is why my favorite years to watch are rebuilding years. No chip or bust expectations, no bandwagon fans, no player fans, no constant relentless hate from media and social media. Just watching a bunch of young talented players learn how to win.
Yeah, the tank years were a ton of fun, no stress at all. Sometimes I’d see the starting roster and not recognize a single name, lol. But by the end I was ready to buy a jersey of whatever scrub had a big game.
I had that feeling watching the jazz push Denver to the buzzer, those are the best tank games. Stay competitive, keep fighting, lose anyways.
Have you ever seen this happening other than with Jokic though? The only time I’ve ever seen a player literally climbing on top of another player on a boxout was Harden a few years ago. Jokic did it twice in this game alone
The reason this is happening is because OKC unlocked a strategy of using a guard to front Jokic on the high/mid post to deny with length behind to pressure lobs. If the guard doesn’t fight for his life, ala Caruso, your defense is 100% cooked.
No other big is getting that type of treatment because why would any defense go to that extremes. Maybe you could argue this tactic would work against Embiid, but he rather flash out to get the ball and go against the guard (which Jokic can’t do).
Also when these guards are squatting down to get leverage, they are pushing into his knees, which causes this specific play.
The problem getting to this is the refs just won’t call fouls here…on either side. The earlier clip, you can see a foul by George fiest, jokic steps away, then next contact Jokic pushes George, who then goes lower and grabs Jokic, who then falls. The refs just need to call any of the previous fouls (by either player)
Even on this one you can clearly see harkless hook jokic with his left arm before he falls.
Fucking annoying that refs didn’t call that locking on knees shit by caruso during the playoffs. Really set up a terrible precedent.
This is play is so fucking dangerous besides locking his lower body, they push their entire body weight on his knees/legs which is an injury waiting to happen. Guards should not be getting away with this cause of their height difference. Imagine someone like giannis doing that shit

If Jokic doesn’t do the weird move trying to step over him then I don’t think anything notable would’ve happened here

Yeah and it’s been said elsewhere, but the refs clearly aren’t calling the smaller stuff this game. Cause you could call foul each way here with the Jokic arm pull then the Harkless leg grab. There’s been a clear pattern though where Jokic escalates it and the refs should absolutely be calling him on it after a certain point
