A lot of German is slightly recognizable to the English ear. They descend from the same language.
Only the occasional word, it is functionally impossible for an average person in the crowd to understand what a native German speaker is saying when it’s full or multiple sentences spoken loud and fast.

yeah if you look at the language branches, romantic languages are based off latin like spanish, french, and italian. english is a germanic language based off the language spoken by the germanic tribes; the same ones that were invading the roman empire towards its end. also, english has had a wild ride. middle english sounds straight up german until modern english came about. really interesting topic to look into.
