Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson is mic’d up, breaking down X’s and O’s and handing out assignments during a timeout huddle
This is awesome, gotta give props to ESPN for trying something new
They do it a lot for WNBA games, especially for final timeouts in the clutch. You get to hear them draw up plays and hear what all the different possible actions are depending on what the defense is giving them.
I’ve always assumed they don’t do it for NBA games because teams don’t want opponents to get the inside track on how their process works but it’s cool the Cavs let them do it for at least an uneventful timeout.
I think having fresh new competition in NBC also helps
Not that new, we’ve definitely seen it before. Would be cool if they made it more regular though
it would be super nefarious for ESPN just to be pumping this live feed of one bench, to the opposing team, or to gambling companies in realtime to help them make betting lines. Imagine the coach reveals that someones hiding an injury or something.
ESPN Bet is a thing right? this is like a conflict of interest.
is this a thing you really think they would do
Not anymore, they folded it I think k
Yeah man that ridiculous scenario you came up with in your head would be bad but it literally isn’t happening so…ok? Also ESPN Bet has been dead for months.
I like when he said “shit” and the broadcast went silent for like 5 seconds
That happened twice this game too lol
So cool to hear actual coaching and not just hustle, rebound! Would like to see more of this
“Your man has the ball, you don’t let him get an easy basket! You hear? Play defense and make shots!”
go hard on them dudes!
“Play random!”
*hoarsely*
come on guys!
come on!
Imagine if you were a Bucks fan and having to hear Doc say, “C’mon guys. C’mon guys.” Over and over and over during a timeout.
Or write on The tablet “contest without fouling”
Not sure where did you hear any coaching here lol. He’s saying the most cliche things you can possibly think of
This is absolutely fascinating. I’ve been watching the nba for 20+ years and have never seen a clip like this. They gotta do this more often
Was just thinking the same thing, been watching NBA since 98. They never actually showed anything like this before. Watched the clip 3 times.. riveting stuff
why can’t we have more shit like this?
Probably coaches aren’t usually down with having their strategies being broadcast on the air.
They didn’t reveal anything in this clip for whoever is wondering. Talking about a near universal counter to a very common ball screen coverage
Coaches probably don’t want strategy and other stuff getting out there.
Back in 2010, ABC was recording the Lakers huddle during the Finals and Phil Jackson told his guys the Celtics usually choke in the fourth quarter. It became a big story, a bulletin-board material thing.
Because you have to bleep things out
ESPN got complacent for years and just fed us hating old heads and braindead analysts
And here I was thinking I knew ball
I love basketball, been to tons of games all over the country to see the Suns when they played in the city I was stationed in, but know nothing about the game outside of pickup games in the military, 21, and HORSE. These cool player podcasts talking about Xs and Os of the game made me realize just how intricate the game actually is. ESPN has a gold mine with this coach cam even for knuckledragger fans like me.
Similar to how Killian Hayes would run circles around you and me with one hand, the lowliest assistant probably knows more about basketball than just people know about anything. And would also dominate your local pick up.
Football: Hee hee, they’re going to feed it to the running back
Basketball: What the fuck is a “pop?”
Not watching this game but based on context, I’m guessing he’s telling Bryant to keep popping after screening as opposed to rolling. So he wants him to pick the ball handlers defender and then pop up at the 3 point line and spot up for a shot.
He wants him to pop because he is downing/icing the ball screen. He’s not popping for a shot he is popping to reverse the ball to set another ball screen when his defender is now too far out of position to get to his ball screen coverage again
NBA fans need a lot more content like this. Actually teaching the game
Great coach damn.
If you like this stuff you should check out the show “Coaches Corner” where Tim Leggler breaks down tape with NBA coaches.
Very watchable and entertaining.

Where can we see it? YouTube?
YouTube and also here https://www.nba.com/watch/list/collection/coaches-corner-season-preview
Thanks!
TB is an elite bench guy.
Listening to this, I can’t help but think of Darvin Ham using the whole timeout to say “Go hard on them dudes, salute” like damn lmao the difference
Contest without foulling.
Thank god for the other networks applying pressure and forcing ESPN to experiment
Honestly great content.
Cavs rule.
I want to hear so much more of this, but I can’t imagine Kenny would want actual strategy being picked up by a Detroit assistant watching the broadcast and giving the info to JB.
It’s pretty obvious what a coach is trying to do just by watching them play I doubt it matters much. Especially after the 2nd half has started.
Dats da shit they never share
I figured the coaches wouldn’t allow this normally?
The part at the end where hes talking with Thomas Bryant is a really neat insight
They do this all of the time for FIBA and Euroleague games.
Glad they’re trying it out finally here, but the coaches’ union will never approve of a full-time implementation.
I want you to come out wide and push that motherfuckers shit in. Can ya do that for me cocksucking motherfucker?
good stuff, always dig any sort of proper behind the scenes look at things in any sport. i wonder what joe is like lmao
Now cut to Darvin Ham with the clipboard
Man I absolutely love hearing the X’s and O’s. I want to be able to experience more of the chess matches the coaches and players get to play against each other. It adds such an extra layer to an already dynamic sport.
Now do this for Doc Rivers
I thought this was cool
