The Pistons and the Spurs have passed Phil Jackson’s 40 - 20 contender rule, but for one of them to be NBA champion, a historic first has to happen
I am very happy with the Detroit Pistons’ miraculous turnaround this season, currently leading the league in winning percentage just two years after a franchise-worst season. If the team sustains this momentum until the end of the regular season and they do not manage to win the 1st round of the playoffs, I most likely would be disappointed. But if they do not win the championship even as a regular season leader, I really won’t be disappointed at all. So far in league history since the merger, there has been no NBA champion whose top 2 players, together and individually, had no experience winning a playoff series in any prior season.
The Pistons’ top two are Cade and Duren. No playoff series win in their name yet. The other “contender” team under Phil Jackson’s 40 - 20 rule, the San Antonio Spurs, are also on the same boat. Wemby has not experienced a playoff series win. Their number two, De’Aaron Fox, has been in the playoffs once with the Kings but was knocked out in seven games in the first round by the Warriors.
Winning it all in the NBA takes time. If the Pistons or the Spurs are to win it all this season, they have to make history.
