Because he has only just turned 22yo and likely still has a lot of development to do.

If you want to use him in the most efficient way right now, then Mitch would just use him as DeAndre Jordan lob threat.

But if that’s all that Wemby is when we are trying to win titles (which I still don’t think is happening this year, but we probably have as fair a contending case as anyone behind OKC and a healthy/in from Denver) - well that would be the disappointment of the century.

Wemby at his best (and we have already seen examples of it) should be able to become a threat, and thus create mismatches, from everywhere on the floor, and against any opposition. You want bigs to have to respect his shot enough so that they leave the lane open for our gaurds, and if they close out on him, to let him drive past them and attack. And if teams go smaller on him, you want him just to be able to shoot/pass over the top, or take them inside and be a lob threat. (Ideally also be a threat in the post, but his body dimensions will never allow him to be a guy that backs people down, but should allow him to shoot over people or create space for others).

None of those individual sklls need to be elite - they just need to be good enough to make defences have to respect it alongside the other skills (and the rest of our offence), and his size should then be enough to take advantage of that.

The level of physicality being allowed to be played on him is actually fucking crazy. He cannot go near the rim without 2 guys straight up bear hugging him, knocking him to the floor, elbows to the torso, etc. Dude is getting straight up assaulted in the last few games. I know I’m biased but there were a few plays against Detroit and Toronto that were just actually egregious with how hard guys are hitting him.

Arguably this is how playoffs will be so he has to get used to it- but he so far has not gotten used to it, so he’s settling for a lot more chucking. He just does not have the body to take that much physical punishment this many games in a row. It’s one of his biggest flaws to be addressed, because if refs arent going to call it, he’s getting bullied off the offensive end of the floor.

He’s shooting 35% on good volume why wouldn’t he shoot them

1. hes young and its better for him to try to add more tools to his game in this stage of his career

2. hes skinny af and will always have the “what if he gets hurt” tag with him, and teams foul him a lot in the paint since its hard to stop a 7’5 guy with decent handles, great athleticism, and good coordination. Its better to get beat up less if he can get away with it.

Now I wouldn’t go so far as to put him above Luka. However, not being in the same calibre is simply being disingenuous to his skill set. Wembayama is by far the most effective defender in the league without anyone coming close. Him being a “meagre” all-star-level/all-NBA-calibre offensive player, as opposed to an MVP one like Jokic, Luka or Shai, on a nightly basis, is made up for by the fact that no one is even debating who the dpoy he is. He is very much in the same tier.

Wemby could figure out that offense by next year but Luka will never figure out how to play defense in his lifetime.

There’s a reason why Fox is averaging some of his lowest ppg of his career. Spurs do not run an offense where they expect one player to go off for 30 every night, and they don’t have to.

Put Wemby on the Lakers with normal minutes and he’s probably averaging 30 or close to it by the way they utilize their star players. That’s not the Spurs offense though. Nor do they care about having him be any more than a 20ppg scorer and a demon on defense. Tim Duncan spent most of his career averaging around just ²⁰⁄₂₁ points. It wasn’t because he was shit. It was because of the offense that the Spurs had.

The fact of the matter is, Wemby has been trash on offense in the last 2 games, while also still being the most impactful player on the floor. If you want to see high counting stats, you’re watching the wrong team.

Why would he try to score 30 every night when the team doesn’t need him to? Especially when he also shoulders being the teams defensive anchor ? It would just burn him out and heighten the risk of injury. They’re running an egalitarian offence right now, him Vassell castle fox and Harper/champ at times are all getting around the same shots. And it’s working
