He was a reasonable defender when he was younger. He’s really fallen off the last few years.
DeMar DeRozan, at no point in his career, was a reasonable defender except for maybe in 2016. He has been a below average defender always. Not terrible, but below average.
Edit: also want to add that him being a good defender is a common belief simply because people overrate the defense of athletic players in general. If you’re athletic and a good defender people will think you’re great, athletic and average people think you’re good, etc.
He was ehh to decent for us, especially considering how much of the offense he carried for us. Believe it or not he was an above average defender compared to the rest of the guys on our squad at the time

Look, when DeRozan eventually gets into the Hall of Fame it won’t be due to his defensive prowess.
It will be because he was healthy for a long time in the league. Above avg scorer who was likely to give you 19 PPG on 39% in the playoffs with no defense or high level playmaking.

Kawhi trade was a slam dunk win/win for the Raptors. Best case, we win a title.
