In a YouTube video posted today, Chris Bosh reveals he was covered with his own blood, without warning, in a serious medical condition
One of my all-time favorites. Just a complete and total absence of ego. Was happy to become a third option if it meant winning. Always put his teammates first.
And fought through some crazy adversity to ball long after weaker men would have given up.
Same. I remember people used to make fun of him because he would rather stay in and read a book or code instead of partying. Just like with Miles Turner and the Lego thing. If anything, I respect them more for being themselves.
What kind of coding was he doing?
Don’t remember all the details but something with middle-out compression.
Yeah, he talked about it in his autobiography.
He was struggling with designing an algorithm, and ended up thinking of a solution while sitting between two guys in a sauna. Pretty cool story imo.
“Mario Chalmers penis just gave me an idea!”
That was it. Bunch of good stories in there so some of the details escape me at this point. Absolutely worth a read for anyone who considers themselves a fan of the game.
Shower thoughts when I was in engineering school was always funny to me. I’d solve a problem that was bothering me for a week and then had to towel off and put pencil to paper before I messed it up.
I would literally take two hour showers (I know, sue me) and just go over my research papers and outlining the structure of it. I’d even speak out loud of speeches and possible rebuttals for thesis protections.
Showerthoughts are a real thing
What was the mean jerk time he was able to achieve?
D2F structure
I remember his Raptors days, and to think he went to the Heat, no ego, taking a step back as the 3rd option was mind-boggling.
You rarely see things like that.
He is such a great person, and I hope he will remain well.
The best were those games when lebron and/or wade would be out, and he’d just go back to dominating.
scumbag Rich Paul said Heatles weren’t a superteam cause Bosh wasn’t a star, just ignoring how he sacrificed for the Heat
Klutch sports is the cancer of the NBA
Which is a wild statement to make because if it wasn’t for that offensive rebound in the Finals against the Spurs, that shot wouldn’t have been made.
Bosh was also the anchor for their defense. He was phenomenal on that end of the floor, very underrated player. I’d argue he was the second most important player on that team.
Imagine LeBron’s legacy if his only win with the Heat was against OKC
That Spurs game comes to mind, one of my favorite Heat wins
I’m not the NBA fan I once was, but I was a rabid Thunder fan in the 2010’s. The best compliment I can give Bosh is that I felt bad for how much I hated him on the heat haha. He was such a good dude it made it hard to hate him.
For sure, it’s much harder/rarer to go from big ego to low ego than to be a relatively low ego person to start with. Have to be willing to eat a lot of your own words and I think Bosh just had a point where it clicked in his head
it was a direct response to the celtics bringing together their big three. ray allen was a baller in seattle but took a step back the same way bosh would eventually
Retired at like 31 in 2016 when the game was changing for stretch bigs. I think he woulda had a awesome twilight to his already incredible career if not for this horrible luck.
He would’ve been better Al Horford
He was always waaaaaaay better than Horford. That’s not even a question.
Oh yeah I’m just projecting his arc as an older 3 point shooting mobile big that’s a defensive presence
The Bostrich!
And he’s better at French horn!
Also took way too much shit for their initial shortcomings when he adjusted his game so much for LeBron and Wade
I feel like that video of him celebrating with champagne in the locker room will forever be his legacy
I grew up in Miami and never really cared for the Heat after the Wade/Shaq title, but Bosh became my favorite when the big three formed, I hope the best for him
also the goofiest post game interview bomber of all time
And a god tier stretch 4
Well said sir
Even tho wade is my favorite player of all time, bosh was my favorite part of the Miami big 3. He was so awesome to watch, especially his long mid-range shooting felt like they always went in
You never hear about him, which means he is doing something right.
thank God this man retired when he did, as someone with a similar condition it’s inspiring to hear him speaking like this
What condition?
I believe it was blood clots that forced his retirement
Wemby please stay healthy
Bosh’s was in his lungs which is different thing entirely
Wemby had one in his shoulder which can happen with compression or things like Thoracic Outlet Syndrome which is what Fultz had
Happens somewhat frequently in baseball pitchers too, Zack Wheeler of the Phillies had the same thing this last season
Tall people in general are at much greater risk for blood clots, though. And wemby is taller than tall. So even though he’s only had one in his shoulder, it still makes sense to wish him to stay healthy, because the taller a person is, the more risk they are at for health problems like blood clots. It’s a long way down to their toes and back up to their heart, which is usually what causes the problem.
Yeah, one more blood clot will permanently end his career. But more importantly for him personally it means his quality of life will drastically be different, so hopefully he doesn’t get that.
Pretty much. I’m sure wemby is on blood thinners but it’s not like you can keep increasing dosage of that. One more clot and the safe option is to shut it down permanently
Well the problem with clots in blood vessels anywhere is they can flake off and get lodged in the arteries of the heart, lungs, or brain.
I personally would not be mad at all if guys like Jokic, Embiid, Bron or Wemby decide to throw in the towel right now. When I say I hope players stay healthy, I meant day-to-day healthy, if that means hanging it up, then so be it. At the end of the day, they’re human beings just like us, and shouldn’t destroy their bodies for our entertainment
it’s sad to know that so many athletes can never walk straight again after retiring, if not worse, in crutches or wheelchair bound for the rest of life, no one should have to be in chronic pain just to exist, and I’m speaking as someone who lives with a family member with scoliosis, I’d probably lose the will to live if I was them
Bruh Stop jinxing it
Wembys clots were provoked (so cause known - repetitive motion) requiring short term anticoagulation. Bosh’s were recurrent so he bought himself lifelong blood thinners.
If I were to guess he probably fell (hopefully not for bad reason) and was hard to stop bleeding, hope he’s ok
He is permanently on blood thinners due to DVT (what Dame and Wemby had) so any cuts or anything can quickly become life threatening. Hence why he couldn’t ply again.
You get put on that medicine after your second clot (note Wemby has had 1 already)
It’s a lil more nuanced than that. If you have a dvt (deep venous thrombosis, aka a blood clot) you get three to six months of blood thinners. Then, depending on whether it is a “provoked” or “unprovoked” clot, you may continue blood thinners for longer than 6 months/possibly lifelong blood thinners. Provoked clots, like those that happen after surgery or perhaps in a woman taking estrogen containing birth control (which is pro-thrombotic), you typically just do 6 months anticoagulation, remove the offending/provoking agent, and that’s it.
For unprovoked clots, because we cannot find a predisposing event/medicine/factor that we can get rid of, it is assumed that you yourself are the prothrombotic factor, which you obviously can’t change. So if you had an unprovoked clot, you are on blood thinners for longer than 6 months. For many people, lifelong blood thinners.
If you develop another clot after your first one, you are considered a recurrent clotter, which pushes doctors towards categorizing your clot as an unprovoked clot and therefore towards lifelong blood thinners.
As with everything in medicine, every decision is made on a case by case basis weighing the positives and the negatives of treatment. What I just described is what should happen in a “textbook” case. But as we quickly learn once we start residency/after medical school, “your patients don’t read the textbook.” So if someone has a super high bleeding risk, we might not start blood thinners at all.
Source: am a doctor.
Has to be a pretty deep cut for it to be threatening; no more competitive knife fighting. The main concern is things like internal bleeding, or blows to the head, since it’s hard to properly assess.
Source: I’m also on anticoagulants for the rest of my life. Conventional wisdom varies on when the “rest of your life” diagnosis kicks in; if there isn’t a proximate cause for the clot, the wisdom is turning to not waiting for the second clot. My second was a coin flip on whether I’d survive to the next morning, so I see the merits in being more conservative.
Around his eyes look really rough
they’re called “raccoon eyes” in medical circles. sign of head trauma, brain bleeding, and/or basilar skull fracture. im gonna assume he got a million dollar workup and they looked for this and either ruled it out or found one small enough that it’s healing on its own and wont require surgery.
They’re called raccoon eyes outside medical circles too
They’re also called raccoon eyes in chessboxing circles too
They’re also called eyes in raccoon circles.
i was gonna say me and all my raccoon homies don’t even talk about eyes, we just eat trash together
The game of chess, is like a sword fight
you must think first
That’s what raccoon medicine would want you to believe.
Fun fact: Medical science invented the raccoon. It’s what you turn into if you take too much fent
one time i stayed up for 72 hours cramming an essay on Adderall and walked into my first day of Senior year with those eyes
[deleted]
It was over the summer essay project that i had procrastinated for approximately 2 months
Did you hallucinate at all? I was up for 3 or 4 days once and started hearing music coming from the air vent in my apartment (I do not recommend this).
Can also be caused be certain non-traumatic medical diseases like amyloidosis. Curiously, certain types of amyloid can also increase risk of thromboembolism. Hire me NBA!
Source: Licensed and board-certified internist.
My eyes look similar to Bosh. I’ve had “raccoon eyes” since as long as I can remember but I haven’t had any of the things you’ve described.
How’s your iron?
Ok, doctors never mentioned it. When I say as long as I can remember, I’m talking 25-30 years.
dark circles can be genetic or a loss of collagen I believe.
Dude relax. Circles under your eyes are completely normal. What the other poster is talking about is very noticeable and a side effect, not a precursor - it happens a lot in severely violent attacks. Bosh has a pretty mild case here - probably days after whatever incident took place. Waaaay different than allergy or tiredness circles which pretty much everyone has
they’re called “raccoon eyes” in medical circles
I really expected the medical community to have a more proper name for it. But just call it like you see it…I guess. Why use complicated greek words when you can just call em racoon eyes.
I mean you can call it periorbital ecchymosis, but most people just call it raccoon eyes lol
Lack of RBC will cause that.
What’s RBC? Red blood cells?
God forbid someone asks a genuine question on this website. Yeah im pretty sure that’s what they meant
Yes Red Blood cells
Thank you for your sacrifice. I’m tired and wasn’t putting it together without you.
Wanna know something funny?
I accidentally clicked TRANSLATE and the text above you went from RBC to “GLÓBULOS ROJOS”
The translation from reddit is pretty good (at least English/Spanish)
fuck AI is smarter than us already
run for the hills
I’m ok with helping in those things.
No lack of rbc causes pale eyes. Bleeding capillaries causes dark eyes
he fell and hit his head. the circles are due to head trauma.
You could have all the materialistic things the world has to offer.. But the real wealth is your health.
There’s different types of wealth: health/physical, financial, social, time, mental.
Ideally, we can balance all of these to really feel wealthy. If you lack in one, your life will feel incomplete.
Society overindexed on financial wealth and sacrifice the others to attain it
This is what I hate about sports discourse where people say things like “Well the money makes up for it” or “The lifestyle is the trade off”
You don’t realize until you’ve gone through it how debilitating chronic pain or other health scares are, millions of people would give up all the money in their bank account in order to just feel normal and healthy again
Agreed
in america millions of people do give up all the money in their bank account if they get sick
Facts bro
A healthy person has a thousand dreams, a sick person has only one
Poor guy can’t get a break. Hope he keeps recovering well.
I love Chris Bosh
I was diagnosed with pre cancer in 2022. At 25. A very rare pre cancer diagnosis for a 25 year old male (like the one i had was incredibly rare and almost exclusively seen in elderly women).0 Im fortunate to be healthy still and under intensive monitoring. But after the diagnosis i thought long and hard about what i want to do with life. I was working like a dog in my corporate stints (investment banking) and eventually realized spending my life building someone elses dream wasnt for me, despite how much $ i was pulling in.
I eventually quit my job and pursued music full time. I now play 3 instruments, produce, compose, and even teach music theory.
Thank you Chris for this wonderful message and i hope to see and hear from you for decades to come
IB fucking sucks, don’t regret walking away either. And if you’re below VP the time to quality of life ratio is still kind of shit regardless.
Glad you found something you’re more passionate about.
This is the kind of shit I love to read on here. Glad you pursued your dream.
Hope he gets better quick. A bit odd to share the shocking part of waking up in a pool of blood and then say you don’t want to expand on that.
I don’t think it’s wrong in today’s day and age to let people know you had a medical scare, but don’t want people to know the specifics when you’re a celebrity. People get crazy parasocial.
But saying you woke up in a pool of blood is kind of specific.
Very, very likely this is gastrointestinal bleeding. As in he woke up in a pool of blood that came out his ass. Very routine in medical circles but it sounds embarrassing to regular folks.
I assume he is on life-long blood thinners due to his history of multiple blood clots. This puts you at risk for GI bleeding (which is more treatable and less life threatening than a big blood clot in your lungs).
This would make sense on why he didn’t elaborate, but wanted to get his message out. Scary as hell.
If you’ve experienced the trauma, you may not want to share the specifics to avoid re-living it. What’s the most important is how you react to it, and it’s fantastic he’s using it to share his message. Sometimes the details aren’t really that important to the message.
Damn he does not look good, wishing him the best that is scary stuff
Is this related to his blood clotting issues?
Who knows?
Once I passed out while trying to pass a kidney stone, on the way down I hit my head and my wife found me covered in blood.
So who knows what happened.
Damn bro I’m glad you’re good. That sounds traumatic for both parties.
Oh I’m doing well now, thanks!
For me it was taking a shit and being super constipated in the middle of the night. Blacked out and cracked my head on the shower stall frame. Woke up to my wife panicking and freaking out. Told her I’m fine, I’m good. As I got up and walked past the mirror my face was covered in blood too. Didn’t feel any different, felt rested, until I started puking on the ride to the hospital from the after effects of the concussion.
Oh my, I hope you’re doing better now.
Same thing with me, one moment I’m trying to take a piss, then I’m on the way to the hospital with my dad and my brother in law.
No pain, no nothing, just asking repeteadly “huh, where are we going and why am I in the car”
probably due to the blood thinners he needs to be on due to the blood clots
Ohh yeah, thinners can make you more likely to faint or get dizzy. So maybe he passed out and hit the floor, possibly injuring himself in the fall which caused him to bleed
Blood thinners don’t make you more likely to faint or get dizzy. A bleed would.
Oh yeah, blood thinners make you more likely to bleed, which could cause dizziness or weakness
Possibly because he’s likely to be on blood thinners for those blood clots.
Another thing to consider is that he is at high risk for both ischemic and hemorrhage stroke.
Really scary. I wish nothing but the best for him.
I remember when he first had blood clots I tweeted my support and he actually quoted, retweeted and said thanks. Ill never forget that.
Wishing him well. Dudes got a great personality and seems to be an overall just good intelligent human.
I get a ominous vibe from this. Is he chronically ill or been diagnosed with something that will kill him? Idk man god bless him and his family he seems like a great dude. And his message here feels like the matrix talking to me personally lol.
well he did have to retire at 32 for medial reasons, so there have always been lingering health issues
He had to retire due to his blood issues.
Scary stuff. Wishing cb4 the best
Holy shit I’m glad he’s okay prayers 🙏
Considering he retired due to blood clots, which are treated with blood thinners, he could have had an emergency due to severe bleeding since these thinners increase risk of bleeding.
Glad he is ok. One of my favorite players ever. Pure class with a pretty left handed jump shot.
That’s what I was thinking.
Prayers up🙏
Sad to see how rough he’s looking
prayers up for CB 🙌🏻
I had an idea when he wasn’t around in the All Stars
Holy shit, no joke I passed out randomly while jogging on Friday, some folks in my area were nice enough to bring me into a local diner and I also woke up covered in blood. I wasn’t running hard or anything, just a normal long steady zone 2 run and all of a sudden I felt the lights going out and thought “yep I’m gonna fall” and I guess I banged my head/face on the concrete. Scary shit, and I’m about the same age as Bosh. Hope he’s alright and gets it figured out.
Damn. As someone nearing retirement, it makes me think how many more years I truly have. I’ve lost three brothers way too soon. Father Time may fuck up my plans too. Thanks for the reminder, Chris.
Bro sound like he ain’t got long or some shit. Prayers up for CB mane.
I took it differently.
Sounded to me like he was on the verge of death and ended up surviving. The last few sentences told a lot. One minute ha was going down and then nothing until he was waking back up. No memory of anything, just nothing.
Sounds to me like he is passing the message to everyone that you only have one life to live to live it to it’s fullest.
I’m weighing whether to early retire -I can do it financially, but I just don’t know whether I should leave the job I’ve had for so many years.
But…how many of my co workers would come to my funeral if I died?
None.
So this helped me a lot today. It’s time for the next chapter.
Damn. Thats some real shit and some real reflection. Hope hes ok
Damn bro are you part of the family 🤣 never seen this reported
Fuck this makes me so upset. He’s just been through it all man, he is just a class act through and through.
Great person and player and I just hope he can get his health up. He’s so undeserving of any of these health problems, life is unkind to the kindest people sometimes.
I feel so silly for being a hater as a kid simply because he joined the Heat. Once I got older and more perspective, all of those feelings just seemed so unnecessary and nonsensical. Bosh has always been a good dude, a good role model as an athlete, a good representative for the league. I’m glad this didn’t end in tragedy and wishing him best for his health.
He seems like such a down to earth nice guy. Sometimes life is unfair with the cards we can be dealt. Obviously his career was cut somewhat short by a blood condition and this is likely related to that. The good news is he’s got unlimited resources to get the best care he can get, but it is something he has to be vigilant about everyday of his life.
Hope he gets well and soon. Always liked Chris, that youtube video of him campaigning for an all star spot is still goated. He just seems like a genuinely good guy
Hope ur ok man. 🙏🏼 for you and your family. We
Absolutely love this man.
Damn, that’s frightening. I hope he is alright. You need your blood!
that’s terrifying
I have this same sentiment… and will add its easier when finances are ok.
I do well ~375k per year and growing.
I watched my mother take care of me and my twin brother..and we are now adults about to be 40…and she texted us this video/commentary about making sure we save ..(i mean i have a 401k, 457(b) and SERP)
The premise of her text and way of thinking is that we should save save save … I didnt take the wisdom for granted…but also took CBs approach …life is short..take the trip take the promotion…take the risk while able ..I can say those things because of how well we she raised us …butbfood for thought..his comment is derived from the comfort and athletic ability that has granted his safety net
This strikes me as the same thing we all hear over and over but for Chris it became real.
There’s a saying that a man has two lives. The second one doesn’t start until they realize that they are mortal.
Glad he’s ok. I hope the best for him and his family.
Damn, wishing him the best.
It sucks to see him looking so rough.
Pulmonary Embolisms (blood clots) are no joke. I’ve had a couple of them.
Man he has always been so fucking awesome. Glad he made it out
Lincoln High!
i love CB4 ❤️
Protect this man at all costs!!!
Any wild speculation to what it was?
Damn I really hope he’s alright. What a great perspective he has on all this though.
My family had a long history of HHT and I’ve woken up covered in blood twice and just spontaneously bled though a shirt once. My sister, father, and grandmother also have had bouts of random bleed outs.
And never once have I been as worried as he looks. I wonder what happened.
Wishing him well. I was lucky enough to have a quick interaction with him and he was kind of enough to take a photo with me even though he was out with his wife for a late dinner. We were all waiting at the front for a table. No way would I have approached him while he was sitting at his table!
I’ve been deliberating on how to break the news to my boss that I want to quit my job and travel (I have a great job, security etc etc). I’ve wanted to do it a long time, and this is exactly what I needed to hear - I’m not going to delay.
Speedy recovery, and thanks for uplifting me to raise my voice to say what I need to say.
Just a shame he had to retire due to medical issues. Hope he continues to be healthy
I hope he’s doing okay. Growing up in Toronto he was such a big part of the team. One of my favourites
Tomorrow is never promised. Live your life.
I love CB this was actually really inspirational DONT WAIT MFERS
wish you all the best chris, you seem like a genuinely good dude. thanks for sharing and all the best man
Damn, scary stuff, glad he’s back with us.
Bosh and Harden are my NBA Jam duo
What a beautiful message. Cheers to him for sharing.❤️
Prime Bosh would be crushing in today’s game.
Wasn’t never a Miami Heat fan BUT a fan of Chris Bosh from his early Raptors career and when he became part of the big 3 with the Heat.
Hope he fully recovers
That’s scary, dude is only 41, same age as LeBron
Damn, hope it all gets better CB 🙏
I remember in high school during one of my computer classes I would go on nba.com’s terrible website and watch all the 30 second highlights of all the games, Bosh was an absolute beast on the raptors. Always happy when he went to Miami and won some championships, dude was a walking 20⁄10!
You just know religious ppl were attacking him under this post for what he said
Scary shit
Georgia Tech legend! Get well soon.
I hate that Bosh is dealing with this. Was such a great player and seems like an even better person.
Prayers up
Imma grab a bosh raptors jersey one of these days
Get well, CB4
Can’t help but continue to feel awful for Bosh. Just happy he’s still alive.
what illness leaves you covered in your own blood? He did not say what it was. I honestly never heard of this. so i am thinking its a really rare issue.
I wish the best for him and his family. He is a genuinely good dude, and he was a good NBA player too, obviously.
Health scares are never good. I know he’s been through a lot. Wishing him nothing but the best. Never heard bad things about Bosh.
🙆🏿♂️✊🏿👊🏿💪🏿🙏🏾🫶🏿🤲🏿🫴🏿🫳🏿
This is terrifying given his history with blood clots. The man nearly died twice during his playing career from the same condition. Really glad he’s still here and using his platform to share that kind of perspective with people.
My favorite player of all time. Glad he’s still ok
I love this dude.
I’m moving to Portland in September!!! Work hard and keep living!!
Dudes career got cut short
man thats crazy, glad he made it through it… CB is a good guy
Praying for him
Man, he does not look good :(
Prayers for you, man
Sending good wishes big fella. Yep don’t wait in life, go for it all because you never know. Carpe diem. And let those you love know it.
