Siakam, Nembhard, and Nesmith all started the games the week before the Jazz game and the week after the Jazz game. It’s incredibly obvious that they were held out so that the Pacers would lose the tank-off against another tanking team.

I get why Carlisle is playing dumb about this, but this sub doesn’t have to play along.

I think the league erred in several ways here, but I made this point in another thread: In this era of tanking and load-management where teams are actively looking for reasons to and are incentivized to sit players, I can understand why the league might not deem it valuable to talk team doctors. If they, for good reason, suspect teams aren’t being fully truthful about the status of their players, what’s the point of having those discussions?

This is what gets me. Carlisle’s two main points were the that NBA didn’t contact Nesmith or the team physician. They mention nothing about Nesmith (which is…weird) and then say contacting the team physician was irrelevant (which is probably true when you’ve already made up your mind). It’s just kind of a blanket statement that read more like the league is just going to ignore him now rather than address anything he actually said.

I disagree. Sports gambling legalization was widely praised as common sense at the time of passing, but the implementation and lack of regulations have been very damaging. They clearly have managed the situation badly, but the legalization of it was not wrong.

The precedent in our nation has been set that if you just announce something loud enough it counts, regardless of facts. You missed the memo I see.

A coach called out the league for something that is straight up bad, fining a team for sitting a player due to injury without having any evidence that they were faking an injury other than a doctor looking at an injury report and saying “seems fake.”

Now they are accusing the coach of not telling the truth, without actually showing where he lied? Most likely nothing will come from this, but what the league is doing right now seems silly and excessive.

Even as a Jazz fan I can say “yeah fine we are tanking, I can see a world where our fine makes sense. I think it is stupid but it makes sense.”

The Pacers fine makes very little sense, and it really seems like they are targeting a market just because. If I was an Indiana fan or owner I would be fired up right now. You haven’t tanked for what? Since I have at least been alive, you do it once and now the league is punishing you. It’s a joke.

And I am sorry if Indiana is being a little extra cautious, it’s not like they just witnessed their star player tear his achiles in the most important game of their entire tenure as an NBA franchise.

They’re not mutually exclusive statements. It’s very possible that, to the best of Carlisle’s knowledge, the Pacers weren’t consulted. Because he wasn’t consulted and the team physician wasn’t consulted. The league is saying they did have contact with the team, just not those guys specifically.

Yea Indiana is supposed to be known for basketball. Even they’re openly trying to lose games now. I think if teams decide to tank they should announce it. Playing tricky with lineups and minutes to lose games makes it seem like point shaving. Just say before the game you’re going to lose. Keep it real.

There would be charts. What did the MRI show? What level of swelling did they note. What precipitations or treatment did they officially recommend.

The NBA is very clearly drawing a hard line on this issue..if there is not damage, no risk of further damage, and no noted swelling the player plays. You know how many guys have played with bad hands over the course of the leagues history.

This is what’s going to happen. The NBA is going to make a bunch of changes that make the situation much worse, like their flattened lottery odds did. No one is going to tank next year or in 2028. The NBA is going to declare victory. Then there’s going to be a good draft class in 2030 and everyone who possibly can is going to tank as hard as they can because the single biggest driver of tanking is how good the draft class is. No one cared about tanking for Alex Sarr or Zach Risacher! And no one’s going to tank in 2027 because the top 10 picks in 2026 all might be better than the #1 in 2027.
