And then what happened? Things got hard for him. And what does Luka do when things get hard for him? He quits. Not on offense, but on defense. No defensive metric matters for Luka. You know they don’t tell the whole story. If a player scores 20 in half the games and 0 in the other half, he’s a 10ppg scorer. But is he? Is he truly averaging around 10 a game?

Teams don’t build their entire offensive strategy in the biggest series of the year on attacking 1 player if that player is truly average. You know this in your heart.

The Celtics attacked Luka on every possession to tire him out. Yes he was also the weakest defender on the floor for the mavs, but weakest doesn’t mean he’s an awful defender. Like everyone else is saying, there’s a difference between awful and average. Just because someone isn’t all-defensive team doesn’t mean they’re garbage.

Back to my first point, that Celtics team was literally one of the best teams in NBA history. They had a stacked roster from top to bottom that were able to lock down everyone other than Luka. They made it so that Luka had to do everything the entire game. He was the only consistent contributor on offense and they attacked him on defense every possession to wear him out. The strategy of attacking Luka every posession doesnt work as well if other people can pick up the offenseive end, but no one could cause the Celtics roster as a whole was so stacked. No man can do literally everything for a team in a game of 5v5 and the Celtics had the unique ability to make other teams have to play that way. That wasn’t because of one single person on their roster.

The Celtics ran the same offense all-through the play-offs with the exact same results. They had players who can get past almost anyone with just one screen, which leads to rotations and open shots for all the knock-down shooters they had.

You really should not build your analysis on lowlights posted on this sub. The Mavs had one of the best defenses in the league that season. Luka his biggest defensive weakness is definitely his perimeter defense and his tendency to gamble on steals, but defensive statistics all pointing towards him being average does NOT make them completely useless just because they do not fit your narrative.

You should adjust your narrative based on the statistics, not the other way around.

He has the same thing that most offensive star players have. He doesn’t pay attention when hes defending off ball and misses rotations/cuts all the time. He also just kinda gives up whenever he gets screened instead of trying to fight through it.

When a team starts hunting him/going at him in ISO, he gets invested and really tries. When he does that hes average as long as its not a super fast smaller guard - he doesn’t have the lateral quickness to stay with the fastest guards.

I really like Luka, but everytime I watch the Lakers highlights half the video is Luka complaining. In the recent games even the Lakers commentators have been talking trash about Luka’s efforts on defense. Idk if its media bias or if he’s really THAT BAD these days. 99% of the time it doesn’t effect the refs ability to call the game. You can go back view video to confirm multiple miscalls if there are multiple. But in the end of your journey. People ,fans, critics remember who played hard and got shafted. They are the ones considered real basketball players. Beggins refs for calls isnt something thats specific to those superstars. Thats something wayy too many players do. I used to watch lebron, embiid, giannis, and more in the past constantly chase the refs for calls. But be honest there is some tiers to the begging that others cant reach. Luka deserves this because hes genuinely ruining the product on the screen.

Neither does Lebron. Sure Lebron is 41 but it means 2 of the 5 people on the court for the Lakers are useless defensively. Half the time they don’t even make it back across half until the play is half way over.
