[Tony East] Tyrese Haliburton is away from the Pacers right now because he’s come down with shingles
I didn’t know he was 50+ years old.
Apparently he had chickenpox as a kid. Not sure how else you get shingles?
Isn’t that the only way you can get shingles or am I wrong
Yes. The virus already has to be in your body. If you have never been exposed to it then it will still present as chicken pox, even if youre a lot older.
Yeah I think so.
I’ve been reading that people who got the chickenpox vaccine are actually more susceptible to shingles than people who got chickenpox
It’s the opposite. We spreading anti vax information?
What kind of vaccine makes you have a higher chance of getting sick?? People just be saying anything now a days.
Ok kid rock
I had it twice. Made me more susceptible to Shingles. Got it at 25.
Had it at 22. Wasn’t until I got hospitalized that they found the shingles, they were in a spot I couldn’t even see on my back and ass. Worst pain of my life for at least 2 months and i’ve also had surgeries on my back, knee, and shoulder - yet i’ll never forget that time with shingles. Literally thought I was dying.
They make these things called showers in which you should be able to recognize random assorted scabs on your body
I wasn’t scabbing by the time it was found, just having nerve pain all over my lower body and thought it was from playing basketball everyday so young me just pushed through it like a idiot until I had a 104 degree fever and passed out after calling 911 at home lol.
Wow, I had it about a month ago (27 years old). Sounds like I got fucking lucky. I had irritated skin for maybe 4-5 leading up to see the blisters, and then just itchiness after that.
Shit, I guess I’ve been lucky. I got it twice too, almost two months apart. Still have yet to get shingles, but I would hazard a guess that’ll get it before I’m 40
I had it once when I was 30. Shit sucked.
same age as me
It’s just more common to get it at 50+. It’s relatively rare in younger people, but still possible and usually triggered by a weakened immune system or high stress.
Adam Silver stressing out Hali with those tanking changes. Threatening to take their pick if they keep tanking
I love how playing Siakam 30+ minutes a game is considered tanking lmfao
Didn’t everyone have chicken pox as a kid? Not literally I guess, but the vast majority, maybe I’m an old
I had the vaccine and never had it
I have no idea if I had the vaccine, I grew up in the 80s, maybe the recommended guidelines changed. I definitely know I had chicken pox though and it wasn’t rare at all for kids to be out of school with it.
Vaccine didn’t exist in the 80s, it came out in 1995. So lots of people didn’t get it unless you are younger.
Fuck. I’m old. I can still graze the backboard!
The vaccine was not a thing until the 90s.
also a kid of the 80s. the vaccine didn’t exist when we were kids and I didn’t realize there even was one until I had kids. chickenpox seems to not even a thing anymore because of it. in the last 20 years, haven’t heard of a single kid who’s gotten it. I’m sure it still happens of course but it feels super rare unlike when we were kids and it was normal for everyone to get it.
My brothers and I were born in the 90s and got it as kids
I got vaccinated against it and didn’t have it as a kid. But I got it as an adult at 24 years old. One of the worst experiences ever.
It weakened me so much that it lead to a salivary gland infection that I had to get face surgery for.
Highly recommend to not get chicken pox as an adult.
I’m for sure getting a shingles vaccine or whatever is available. I ain’t dealing with that again.
You’re old. If you’re 35 or younger chances are you got the vaccine.
I’m 32 but I grew up in rural Georgia so I just got chickenpox, as God intended
It’s not about getting it, it is how it’s expressed after you carry it. A weakened immune system from age or stress will exacerbate the latent virus, then boom - shingles.
I had shingles when I was 35
I had it around age 32. Thankfully hasn’t returned in 9-10 years since.
I had it when I was 23, now whenever I see a bump on my face I get worried it’s shingles lol.
Same here. It was fucking terrible
Hey, Shingles Twin!
My sister got shingles at 13. Shit sucks
No joke, I got shingles in Kindergarten. The skin on my arms was sensitive for years
I had shingles at 14. It sucked lol
Same lol
I had it at 25
I’ve had it twice by age 16. Both times the doctors did all sorts of tests figuring I had bigger immune system problems but luckily I didn’t just extremely outlier rare case.
I had a UTI that turned into a kidney infection when I was in my late teens / early 20s. As a guy.
doctor thought that maybe I had immune problems but really I had just spent my thanksgiving break doing nothing but taking percs and drinking alcohol. oops.
degenerate college days but I finished with a 3.8 & no addictions so I guess that’s a dub
You wild asl 😂😂
Same. Was rundown from teaching in the city, went through a breakup.
All of a sudden I wake up with this rash, sent the pic to my buddy and he’s like “keep an eye out could be an unlikely case of shingles”
I go to urgent care the next morning. I lift my shirt and doc goes “oh yeah you got shingles”
That shit was notttttt fun.
I’ve had heart surgery twice, pancreatitis which led to me getting surgery, a bunch of broken bones, jaw surgery twice — I’d choose any of them at random over having shingles again.
same as me lol
I’m in my mid-30s and got shingles last year. Pretty sure age is a number and you can get it any time once you have the virus dormant.
Had it as a 1st grader and then when I was 34. There are always edge cases.
I got shingles the first time when I was 23. Have you ever had a doctor laugh at you after diagnosing you? Shit sucks.
i had shingles when i was in sixth grade
I had shingles at 38 last year. It was fucking awful.
Man, I literally have it right now, sucks so much
I had shingles as a 30 year old and it was the worst pain I had ever experienced. Wouldn’t wish it on anybody.
I got shingles at 19. Shit sucked a lot
Knew a girl that would get shingles. She was like 25
I had shingles in 3rd grade. Shit sucked. Right on the top of my head. Every time the wind blew, it was pain.
Its a lot more common these days for younger people it feels like.
I got it in my 20s.
Got it in my 30s.
Tyrese is having the worst season of all time, it’s almost comical. Can’t play a minute because of an injury, your team sucks without you, you get fucking SHINGLES and can’t even support them.
I mean…he is also making his over $45m on his NBA contract alone, got engaged, and has proven his value to Indiana beyond argument.
Is it worse than the time Latrell Sprewell turned down three years \(21m by saying he had a family to feed, then played terribly and washed out of the league entirely cause he found subsequent offers of \)1m or so insulting?
Wait are we all supposed to cite worse examples in the effort to imply money solves everything, superceding context?
I mean I’d deal with shingles for a few weeks for $45m. You?
Only with a guarantee of no complications. Shingles is no joke. The shit can blind you, paralyze your face, fuck with other senses, lead to chronic nerve pain, and do all sorts of other shit that you never recover from.
I watched Starting 5, I feel bad he is engaged…
Engaged? Poor guy
yeah, you tell em! (im single asf too 🥀)
Devils advocate, he’s making millions and millions of dollars to rehab, his team sucking could lead to a top pick and help when he gets back next year, he’s fairly newly engaged, but yeah shingles sucks.
He should win MVP because him not being active for the Pacers just shows how valuable he really is because they’ve been horrible with a similar roster.
Team being bad sucks. But it’s a real confidence booster for him and he gets to play with a top pick.
I firmly believe that, next season, the Pacers will reclaim a top 3 in the East position. It really depends on how Hali bounces back, but with him, Siakim, Zubac, a top pick, Toppin… Hopefully, Halliburton wants it as bad as their fans do.
His team is tanking, purposefully. They didn’t really stick that bad without him. They’re just gaming the system
They’re tanking intentionally now but at first I think they were hoping to still be a 40 win team and focus on development. Like that team that debuted against OKC looked like theyd still be homecourt playoff. Just they got hammered by injuries and losing that much early, and this draft being so good, there was no reason not to tank. They were going to lose Ben in free agency so even if the clippers take their pick the tank already paid off with zubac
Bingo. Also, on top of that, it’s not exactly fun to watch your team lose night after night. The Pacers being a bottom-5 team isn’t great for Hali to watch. I’m sure that he’d much rather be watching his guys win than tank.
I had shingles two years ago. That shit is painful. Had it on my torso and any clothes that you wear, it feels like skin is on fire
I work in a hospital and treated a patient several years ago who got shingles on/inside his anus. Not a typical presentation but he was immunocompromised so he got it in the worst place imaginable and it took weeks to fully resolve. Felt fucking awful for him.
Johnny Cash had the same experience. It inspired ‘Ring of Fire’.
Yeah, I have it right now under my left pec. Sleep is a commodity because as soon as I move it stings and hurts so much it wakes me up. And just the constant random pains, stings, chills and itches are driving me insane…
Had it a decade ago. Was fortunate I had maybe 25-30 total bumps, all in 2 small patches on my back.
Vaccinate your kids, people
Isn’t the shingles vaccine something you get in your like… 50s? Lol
Edit I had a stupid brain fart and forgot that chickenpox vaccine prevents shingles, it’s been mentioned!
Double edit definitely vaccinate your kids
Chicken pox vaccine is what you give to kids to prevent Shingles.
Right right. Although I am seeing that people get shingles after having the chickenpox vaccines, just lower incidence rates. Still, I agree with your first comment lol
Totally true and I’m definitely not saying Hali is unvaccinated. Just Shingles sucks. And vaccines help prevent it.
Yeah. Vaccinate your kids 🫡
Yes, and the shingles vaccine is what you get at 50 to prevent shingles if you were a child before the chicken pox vaccine.
Yes, there is one you can get after 50 as well as the childhood one. Where I am it’s called Shingrix
Yeah, if you had chicken pox as a kid, you’ll need a shingles vaccine at 50.
used to work in a pharmacy, when older customers came in to pick up random scripts there’d be a pop up to ask the patient if they were interested in the shingles vaccine. Think it was 60+. We never had supplies of the actual vaccine, it would be like a 4 month backlog of catching people up
for kids get the chicken pox vaccine, but adults should get the shingles vaccine.
He’s in a hotbed of antivaxxers in Indy
Vaccination rates in Indianapolis aren’t bad.
Apparently COVID vaccine hesitancy around Oshkosh, WI - where he’s from - is pretty bad. Probably translates to all the normal vaccines as well. It’d be interesting to know if his parents vaccinated him for chickenpox.
https://www.healthdata.org/news-events/insights-blog/acting-data/covid-19-vaccine-hesitancy-us-county-and-zip-code
The map you show has Oshkosh and Indy with exactly the same rate of vaccine hesitancy.
My bad. I thought Oshkosh was further north in that broader area of hesitancy. For whatever reason, that part of Wisconsin is as vaccine hesitant as Indiana’s Amish areas.
that is horrible, I wish him a speedy recovery
I got shingles right after my neck fusion and back fusion surgery. What a fucking nightmare. I was 26 or 27.
My wife still breaks my balls I had to take valtrex.
I feel for Hali, oatmeal bath only thing that helped me
Completely unrelated but how are you doing after your fusions
They kicked my ass. I moved from nyc to Florida because the cold weather was brutal. You don’t realize how much your neck/back does when you can’t use them like you’re used too.
Medical Marijuana has been a life saver.
Thanks for asking bro.
I live in Central NY and herniated the L4/5/6 discs in my early 20s. It absolutely sucks having to shovel/walk through snow and ice with nerve damage five or six months out of the year. I always end up with shoulder/neck/hip pain trying to compensate for my low back and half dead legs
Tyrese ‘a series of unfortunate events’ haliburton
I know Haliburton is more of an old school pg but I didn’t realize he was that old.
Needs to be with the team hugging everyone if we want to pull off this tank
Shingles 4 Peterson!!!!!!!!
teams that are tanking should intentionally get their players sick with different diseases. Can’t say you’re sitting out players if they’re in a hospital
I got shingles when I was late 20s and it was the single most painful thing that’s ever happened to me, it feels like someone is just dragging a knife across your skin endlessly
Can confirm
Same but in my 30s. I thought I must have irritated my scalp somehow then went to urgent care when it hurt around my eyes. The doctor said “I’m going bet you’ll start seeing a shingles rash by this time tomorrow” Then it developed across the entire right side of my face. Two of the worst weeks of my life. The pain felt like getting cut with an electrically charged knife. Then even when the pain ended a couple weeks later the itching was almost as bad.
Really awful experience.
get the vaccine. shingles is painful and the vaccine largely works.
Repaying devil magic gotta suck
Damn. We should probably also keep Siakam, Nesmith, and Nembhard away from the rest of the team and the games for a few weeks too just as a precaution.
He got Joe Ingles?
Silver can’t wait to fine em for it
Adam Silver was ready to issue the fine
That’s crazy
There is a vaccine and it should be free for everyone
It’s for age 50+
I have a feeling Haliburton can afford the vaccine cost
i’ve had the chickenpox vaccine when i was a kid and still got chickenpox once (3yo) and shingles twice (19 and 23yo). sometimes shit just happens man
There’s actually a portion of people where the damage is permanent and they end up fucked up for life and
I’m glad I’m not famous. This is such a weird thing for the whole world to know is happening to you.
How does one get shingles in their 20s
Get chickenpox as a kid, recover, then go through something stressful in your 20s (like injury rehab).
Yep got it a week before my wedding late 20s lol
Shingles doesn’t discriminate by age.
The only reason the vaccine is only covered for 50+ is because it’s expensive as hell and insurance companies don’t want to pay for everyone to get it
A player with so much plot armor shouldn’t be injured this much imo
Well that fucking sucks.
When it rains it pours.
Had shingles 5 years ago when Covid started. Worst thing I’ve ever had. Shit sucks hard
I had shingles recently, it sucked, it wasn’t that painful just really irritating when clothes touched it and randomly super itchy.
I literally got shingles on my buttcheek when I was 20. Got an A- in a class even through having the shingles, but had to retake the class because I didn’t actually show up to class (bc I had shingles) just took the tests only.
I was fuckin pissed lol
Wtf???
I remember as a kid my mom got this a couple of times and I’m only just not realizing she got it pretty young (mid 30s the first time) as a kid I knew it was an old person thing and it made sense she’d fall into that group 💀
Family member had shingles in their 30s and the rash wasn’t that bad but in trade the side effects were. Worst part was actually the unlucky temporary facial paralysis on one side that sometimes comes with it. Serious business but no lasting effect in this case fortunately.
Don’t those rashes hurt a lot? Praying for him
Had my lower arm fully tattooed last year and by some stroke of bad luck got shingles on the same side of my chest and back. It was fucking horrible, couldn’t sleep or stand up straight for 3-4 weeks. So I kinda feel this one.
Shingles can be activated if you have compromised immune system. PEDs, especially AAS, are known to store your immune system. I ain’t saying I’m just saying
Oh fun fact, getting shingles is strongly linked with developing dementia later in life! Consider getting the chicken pox/ shingles vaccine to help prevent that
At 25?!
edit: I’m reminded that various things can hamper your immune system, not just old age.
one trigger is stress. i assume nba players bodies get pretty stressed. but most likely, just dumb luck as some people just get sick.
Two years ago I scheduled my Covid shot. I looked through the form at other shots I might get, & thought sure, I’ll get a shingles shot.
They told me when I got there that I wasn’t eligible, they usually didn’t give it to anyone under a certain age (I’m 33).
Less than a month later, I got shingles. Thanks, buttheads.
Friendly reminder that no matter when you get Shingles, you CAN get a Shingles vaccine afterwards, and should
What was he doing on the roof?
And people think they’ll be in the finals next year lmao
Tyrese having shingles in 2026 means they cant make the finals in 2027?
