We never gave up on him. Pat during his negotiations for an extension had some crazy ass demands for a coach at that time. Some of his demands were also highly unreasonable, like wanting a 25% ownership stake in the knicks. He also had some disputes with our FO. However one day he just sent the team a fax saying he quit and the Heat hired him giving him alot of what he wanted. Rumors, which most likely are true, is that Mickey Arison, owner of the Heat was negotiating with Pat behind closed doors while Pat was giving these demands to the Knicks FO. Pat also was still under contract with us at that time this all occurred.
I remember. The Heat gave him all of the things he wanted. Miami went on to win 3 championships in 7 NBA Finals appearances, while the Knicks haven’t won the championship in more than 50 years. New York should’ve given him what he wanted instead of playing hardball and giving up on him
If the 25% request is true, that would’ve been valued at \(50 million in 1995 dollars and \)2.5 billion based on its value today. The highest paid coaches at the time were making around \(7 million. Phil Jackson maxed out at \)6 million with the Bulls (he got paid more by the Lakers later on).
Considering the Heat gave up a FRP and $1 million to the Knicks to make tampering charges go away, it sounds like the demands were extreme so the Knicks would be forced to not agree to them.
He asked for a five year, 50 million dollar extension, 25% ownership of the knicks, and complete control of personal decisions. Demands that were unheard of for a coach back then. The knicks countered with a 5⁄25 mil deal, so we were working to find a middle ground but he decided to quit by fax and move to miami.
Also the heat gave him all this except instead of 25% it was a 10% ownership stake.
If that’s accurate, then it’s even clearer that his demands of the Knicks were a poison pill.
I found a WSJ article which says the Heat were worth \(97 million in 1996 and the Knicks were worth \)205. So he demanded \(51 million (plus salary, per diem, control, etc) and settled for \)9.7.
It doesn’t sound like he wanted to return to the Knicks at all.
He got part ownership of the Heat. I don’t remember the amount of but I don’t think it was 25%. I think more like 10% though I could just be misremembering it. I don’t believe he owns it anymore. I read a story years ago that he had sold his stake in the team.
It probably wasn’t a big deal for the Heat. Ted Arison was the original owner of the Heat but Billy Cunningham was a minority owner and acted as GM. When current owner Micky Arison (Ted’s son) took over he bought out the other minority owners and probably just gave their shares to Riley when he was brought in.

Lol all the Heat championships occurred after the Knicks went into the dark ages thanks to Dolan and Isiah Thomas. The Knicks owned the Heat for the rest of the 90s, even with Pat on their bench and FO. Also two of the Heat championship came in the 2010s after assembling the Heatles, which Pat was not the architect behind it, he just happened to be GM when Wade, Bosh, and Lebron agreed to team up years before. His 06 championship while yes he won it as coach, he literally forced out Stan Van Gundy to take over the team.
