It takes much more than just lottery luck.

I don’t think it was luck atleast with my Pistons they have had one number overall pick since 1970 and thats Cade and they were by far the worst team in the league for 5 years and fell 4 of the 5 years. Spurs getting Wemby wasn’t really luck either as they had virtually the best odds of getting him. They had a few other lucky years recently though.

I mean the Pistons had the highest odds possible for the #1 when they got Cade, and that didn’t require tanking, just a legitimately bad team.

Also had the absolute worst record twice and got 5th overall both times, which landed Holland and Ausar.

So I wouldn’t call that whole span “lottery luck.”

i mean, this is objectively true tbh. Three straight top 5 lottery picks, and one of them is the greatest prospect since LeBron. Not only, that, Wemby came as advertised.

We can talk about moves like getting Champagnie cheap, and HB, but it was getting Victor that saved us. Then on top of that we got some serious lottery luck

Devin Vassell is one of the highest paid Spurs in franchise history, and he’s just a decent role player. Sochan was cut for nothing. Primo was a pervert. Blake Wesley and Branham were complete misses, not to mention harrison ingraham and wieskamp. The rebuild was directionless. So many misses in the draft

This is the first season since 2017 that the spurs look like the spurs. Nearly 10 years ago. Since Kawhi left, we’ve been an OK team (2018 and 2019, losing in the first round), to getting murdered in the play-in games, and then being downright abysmal

Only Harper was absurd luck. Wemby we were tied for best odds and Castle we moved down a spot, we just got lucky Houston took Sheppard instead

For a 1st overall pick, either 2003 or the Bulls lucking into Rose with like, a 1 percent chance. And even then, that particular respite from Chicago’s post-MJ misfortune was short-lived due to injuries.

Not sure what version of ‘literally’ you’re using, but we were in the 2019 playoffs and almost beat the Nuggets and we got Wemby in the 2023 draft. We were at worst bad for 4 seasons till we got him. Of course, we were also bad the season after we got him, but still not near 7.

Every team in sports has down years and usually consecutive down years- it just depends on how well your org is able to pull out of the downward trend and for how long they can stay good once they break out of it.

The Kings have been terrible for virtually a decade, they had one good year, and immediately went back to sucking. (Sorry Kings fans, I am rooting for a change for you guys)

Spurs stayed consistently good for a LONG time and they only had a pretty short window of bad years before becoming a contender again. (obviously major draft luck is involved, but still.)

The Kawhi trade being considered a mistake is such a wild thing to say especially considering all the info that has come out after the fact. Come on now.

You seriously can’t compare the Kawhi trade to them drafting Primo/Sochan (which then again who expects your new guy to show his dick to a team therapist??)

Kawhi trade wasn’t a mistake he quit on the team. The Spurs had to trade him after that especially after he tanked his value.

Sochan was a bust ( for us at least so far) but they couldn’t have predicted Primo to be a sex fiend showing his dick off to random therapists.

The Kawhi trade was fine. What do you suggest the spurs should’ve done instead? His value was terrible because he missed an entire year with a mystery injury and was clearly done with the spurs and was demanding to only go to LA. The clippers lowered their offer to Tobias Harris with one year on his contract and the 13th pick. The lakers best offer was Brandon Ingram and one pick, plus probably taking Deng’s bad contract on.

We ultimately got a first from the initial trade to Toronto which became Keldon Johnson who is still important to our team. We traded Jakob for the first that we traded to get the best pick we traded for Fox. We traded DeMar for another of the firsts we traded for Fox and a first that ended up not working out.

Ah yes the 61 win 2017 spurs that made the conference finals famously sucked. And the 2018 spurs that won 47 games while missing their best player basically the entire season sucked too. And the 2019 spurs that nearly eliminated the nuggets from the playoffs sucked too.

I think the flip side to it is that real people (and the media) keep up the narrative that some of these lower seeded teams are “championship contenders” and “dark horses” and “can make noise in the playoffs”, when that’s just severely unlikely. The best performing regular season teams are the ones that make it out of their conference. But people still want to talk about the Lakers with LeBron and Luka like they’ve got a shot.

It’s a good indicator like the Shockmaster made a good entrance.

Unfortunately they got 20 losses before 40 wins, so they cannot legally win a championship this season.
