Good explanation of why the Lakers are miserable to watch

The issue with this is that it doesn’t account for how a player shoots. Some players are much better at generating contact and thus free throws than others in certain areas. Tatum (I’m a Celtics fan) used to drive a lot, and the defense used to foul him a lot in the paint, since if they don’t, he’s likely to hit the layup. Other guys on the team used to drive a decent amount, and the defense didn’t foul since they knew those players were much less likely to hit a shot near the rim,m so they didn’t need to foul compared to with Tatum. Good players often get fouled a lot since they are much larger threats to score anyways while driving or something. If shot contact data existed, then this would be cooler. Really good website though. Super nicely designed.

This is fantastic! Just one thing, if I may. I think there’s probably a point where generating contact becomes a skill. A straight-line layups from Zion or KAT is mechanically different from a layup from SGA, who decelerates and re-accelerate so fast, or Luka, who puts defenders on his hip and stops. The former is an incidental contact as a result of putting defender out of position by beating them with force/speed, The latter is an engineered contact by a true merchant using crafty moves like gear shifting, subtle offarm nudges to force defenders to clip their body

Amazing work, OP. This will absolutely be used to substantiate many a Reddit argument about baiting, and is probably about as good as the metric could be without factoring in other things that aren’t widely available as stats. Factoring in the non-shooting fouls is key.

Factoring in charges drawn is tough, because I think most drawn charges are seen as good offensive play, but an occasional one is obviously a flop. (I think Brunson lead the league in charges drawn last year, and that would generally be seen as positive and an undersized guard sacrificing his body for the team, though an opponent usually thinks every drawn charge is a flop because refs only call charges if you fall over).

Good work. I’d add that some of these people are annoyingly adept at drawing non-shooting fouls, too, which can have as much of an effect on a game as shooting fouls (get in bonus; get good defender in foul trouble; frustrate momentum). Reaves, Jokic, Dort, Smart, and Podziemski come to mind right away. Falling down on screens, jumping on top of defenders to get a reaction, hooking defenders, drawing charges, etc.. Some of us like watching defense, and some players and coaches really don’t think good defenders should be allowed to do their job.

Reaves is the most annoying player I see. He is always falling down and flailing his hands! Also, like Podz I hate how they get most of the offensive foul calls by just being in the way because that is the only way they can defend!

I don’t know if there is any part of the formula that accounts for player efficiency pre-fta in those areas. Players who are greater threats are going to get fouled more often which isn’t… grifting.

Very much a stretch and misleading. OP should only be able to claim some players are getting more free throw than average. But OP can’t claim those free throw are un- deserving and the result of being a foul merchant. Defense tends to be more aggressive to good offensive player, becasue bad offensive players are not going to score anyway

Not the fault of OP at all, but it is just frustrating to me there are so much interest in analyzing data and so little with collecting data, leading to fruitless discussion
