[Injury] John Collins with a hard fall off an unintentional bump by Jaxson Hayes in mid-air, as both his body and head hit the floor. He started bleeding from his head (with replays). Lakers, ESPN, and Clippers commentaries
People calling for a flagrant? Is the logic that hayes just isn’t allowed to for the ball there?
Also not allowed to land. Shame on him for not bending the rules of the Matrix.
I don’t think this warranted a flagrant and definitely don’t think the play was dirty, but…the defensive player has the obligation that his defensive play doesn’t endanger the other guy. The potential for injury is so high on airborne players that that threshold for reckless is just different which makes Hayes play more borderline flagrant than it seems. Legitimate play on the ball, but hella dangerous.
Yeah the comments make no sense, this isnt case where the defender makes a play on the ball, isn’t close, and then hits the offensive player. Hayes is the only person that actually touches the ball.
Then collins grabs for the rim, for no reason, which is why he landed sideways instead of on his feet like every other missed back door alleyoop.
Its a bad outcome, but if collins isnt grabbing the rim with no ball, we are moving on to the next play.
This damn near a no call. It’s unfortunate what happened forsure but in no way does Jaxon foul him.
Would you consider it reckless that he threw himself backwards like that? Idk it’s a tough one considering they have given flagrants for other obviously non intentional contests where the defender just lands under a guy jumping 5 ft forward.
Based on how the refs interpret it from night to night I’m certainly surprised it wasn’t called, but I’d also not call half of what they do end up calling anyway, so what do we know on Reddit.
But hayes literally never sees him
Oh ok so you can do whatever you want if you keep your eyes closed or look the opposite direction. Makes sense.
He’s facing the opposite direction and jumping straight up to contest the pass, why would he be looking behind him instead of at the ball?
Collins grabbed the rim.
So you never played ball huh
Terrible take, terrible justification, if you hate reddit so much just put your phone down
No
Is Reddit just all bots now? How are people this dumb?
Look at the state of our country right now if you need another example
What are you talking about
I think he’s the bot.
Lots of reasons to hate on Hayes but this is not one of them. His mommentum simply carried him backwards right into Collins
nuance is dead. bunch of dumb mfs in these comments
Is that even a foul? He plays the ball and begs the ball first
Yes, you still got to allow an airborne player to land.
But they both jumped for the ball at the same time
Doesn’t matter, Hayes moved into Collins landing space.
You made that up. Or you’re confused about the rule protecting shooters’ landing zone, which has nothing to do with this play.
They were both airborne. He played the ball.
Hayes lands and his momentum carries him underneath Collins who was still in the air.
They both played the ball. He contacted the ball.
Hayes thought Collins was the Clippers mascot
Justice for G-wiz
Or the people in New Orleans when he was going nuts in that house
His back acted like a slide 🛝 wasn’t a flagrant tho And that lady in the espn commentary said “he’s dead” 😵 🤦♂️
I’ll always wonder why Jaxson Hayes threads on here are totally normal and Miles Bridges ones are completely deranged. I mean, I know why but still
Hayes did undercut him, and an injury resulted.
In today’s NBA, that’s usually a flagrant 1
Collins shouldn’t have grabbed the rim there.
He was trying to avoid the fall, but the contact from Hayes ended up making it worse.
This- Doris “big queef” Burke was grabbin at straws here. “Continuing back with his momentum, he’s a defenseless player” what in the absolute fuck. Watching it in slow motion, when he grabs the rim is what throws his center of gravity off.
You’d get your ass kicked at the health club for doing that.
Doing what…? Trying to break up a pass?
The contest is fine then undercuts an airborne player.
So why did Jaxon Hayes keep backing up when he saw Collins in the air behind him?
To get the ball
Hayes is a dirty mf
As a fellow high-flyer you think Hayes would have some more awareness & concernment for a fellow player who’s in a helpless situation & susceptible to getting seriously injured like that.
Idk & idc if it was intentional, but it looked reckless. As a 7-footer, a little awareness goes a long way 💯
It was a dumb play by Hayes because he prevented Collins from landing similar to players contests shots and then taking away their landing space . If he meant to do it or not is unknown but he will not be given the benefit of the doubt because of his history. He needs to mature his mentality to adjust to his scrutiny.
This getting called a foul was ridiculous btw. Clean swipe by Hayes there. What did he do exactly?
Pushed his ass out and took Collins landing space
You can’t knock people out of the air like that lol that’s basically the most dangerous thing you can do in basketball
Collins grabbed the rim. That’s was tilted him so hard.
I think the hangup here is that there was nothing inherently intentional or dangerous about what Hayes did. He went up, made the play and his natural momentum carried him back. It’s a foul because intent has nothing to do with it; it’s like if you dive for a loose ball and bang into someone who got there first, the foul is on you.
Then again, I’ve seen players get clubbed in the head and then the foul get overturned on replay because the defender grazed the ball just before clubbing the offensive player in the head. A flagrant 1 if they miss the ball but a clean block if they touch it first … so I can understand the confusion.
it’s a foul because intent has nothing to do with it
I’m just going to highlight this for you because the other replies couldn’t be bothered to read what you wrote haha
Intent doesn’t matter in determining if something is a foul or not.
Yeah just like I literally wrote. “It’s a foul because intent has nothing to do with it.” Thanks for your additional insight though!
Mid air is far different though, intent matters far less when the result is a player bleeding and ruled out for atleast the rest of the game.
Bro cannot see through his bias 😭
Hitting people when they’re vulnerable in the air is a flagrant. The guy literally bled off the court and didnt come back. We needed him the rest of that game man
Didn’t the clippers cheer for pat bev when he did the same things lol
Lakers fan(others thinking of commenting in defense of “your guy”), you don’t NEED to make yourself sound like a psychopath defending this one. Watched it myself for you box sheet/socials clip casual viewing Laker diehards and I’ll sum this up for you to digest:
Hayes sees Collins running that lane for a mile before the action of the play there happens, the lob from about half court, and because Hayes has the BBall IQ of a pond Koi who intentionally beaches itself occasionally. Jaxson believed that for some reason to be a 3 seconds into the shot clock shot 3PT attempt from The Logo’s buttcrack/mid court cause yeah Jaxson Hayes(replay his 1st attempt in the dunk contest to see more).
The short version has been covered by others, regardless of what Jaxson believed was going on during that play, one of basketballs unwritten rules before the NBA actually made it one(let cats land from a leap/don’t alter mid-air trajectories) was to avoid this very legitimate risk of bodily harm, one of the very few you can sustain playing in the NBA aside from the other logical play, also here involving Jaxson Hayes as a stand-in, where one player turns off their brain entirely and plows head first right into the head of another player. -AST
