I don’t think Brown should win MVP but if you watch the Celtics consistently you can very clearly see that he is the only guy this team can trust to score at volume on decent efficiency on a night-to-night basis. obviously the advanced stats don’t really capture that, because advanced stats are incapable of fully capturing a player’s role on a team

White has been absolutely insane defensively and Pritchard has taken a big step forward as an overall offensive creator but if Boston needed them to be the primary scoring options, we would not be where we are in the standings. their highs are epic but they’re just not consistent enough

I don’t think anyone who is serious is talking about him as an MVP candidate.

It’s Jokic, SGA and then a few murmurs of Cade if they don’t meet the games played criteria.

Luka, Wemby, Kawhi, Curry, Brown, Murray, Ant, Maxey have all been great too but none are realistically MVP chances.

Saying he’s “below average efficiency” when he is literally .008% below the League Average TS% is some real agenda pushing lol. If that’s your standard then every player in the league is either Above Average or Below Average, and about a dozen guys every week vascilate between the two extremes.

MVP is a year to year award. Why data across five years matters is beyond me.

Developing an advanced stats metric and being a stat/spreadsheet genius doesn’t magically make a person impartial. We all have biases and certain stats are even built with those biases baked into them. 

This is a clear bias from this Narsu guy.

Jaylen is leading a team most thought was lottery/playin bound to the second best record in the East, 4th best record in the entire NBA. He has all the defensive attention on him, a high usage rate, and the ball in his hands a lot. That explains away literally all the statistical noise. He’s still the guy Boston wants taking shots and they’re winning games as a result. 

I don’t think he’s MVP and I don’t think anyone is seriously pushing that narrative either. But he’s in the tier below and deserving of the conversation. 

Idk about a LeBron stat but JB passes the eye test and the team is far exceeded expectations while he is the lead guy.

I’ve never heard of Narsu, but you have to understand advanced stats capture a lot of Hardenization of basketball and in the end, efficiency and on/offs don’t matter if you’re winning the minutes you’re on the court and walking away with a Finals MVP

Not saying I disagree with the general point, but this dumb “team plays better without <star player>” narrative needs to die. You can cherry pick random stats to make this case for basically every player. But watch the game for 5 minutes and only an idiot will come away with the conclusion that JB is dragging the Celtics down.

There’s also no one making an actual case for him being MVP. He is at best 5-10 in the rankings.

So, I like Brown a lot and I think he’s made awesome improvements. That said, the Celtics have a surprisingly good cast. Everyone figured they’d be trash, they stayed hot, and Brown is there go to guy. So I get why he might get some votes. At the same time both the coach and the team have really proven themselves a lot. For example Hugo Gonzalez is legitimately a great role player. White is obviously great but also they hit on their center being good. It’s a fun team

The actual MVP race is such a boring 2 man race (1 man actually because Jokic is probably missing another game) that all the media can do is talk about guys that absolutely won’t win it but should be a candidate anyways.

Derrick White has had a positive +/- and on/off +/- every year of his career. He’s +10.5 in both this year.

Basically, the Celtics are an average team when White sits, and have the scoring differential of an elite contender when he’s playing.

I dont think anybody is seriously considering him to win the award, but a lot of people think he should be top 5 which is a fair take. Every year the best player on every top 3 seed are in the mvp conversation so why should it be any different with brown and the celtics this year.

What this does show me though is that the celtics should not be taken seriously to make the conference finals and even putting the celtics and nba finals in the same sentence is laughable. The celtics will be in a competitive first round series and if lucky will scrape through and lose in the second round which is their absolute ceiling. No shame in that at all considering where they were supposed to finish before the season started
