That being said, the use of “death threat” in the headline OP’s title is inaccurate. He didn’t threaten to cuase their death, he just wished it would happen. Still absolute loser behavior, but we should also expect a little more from any sort of reporting.

I want to blame gambling, but it’s mostly just how some people are. They can’t control themselves regardless if they were gambling or not. They probably yell at service people for messing up their order, or delivery drivers for not being fast enough, break stuff when they lose a video game, or hit their girlfriends/boyfriends when they get upset. Just scummy people overall with no self control. People want to blame gambling like it brings the worse out in people when in reality those people are just degenerates who have no self control to begin with.

Legalized Sports Gambling is the worst thing to ever happen to the game. Not just basketball too, it’s hard to even find a reasonable conversation about sports without someone bringing up their parlays and gambling habits.

It’s an even bigger shame the league and players are allowed to promote it as heavily, I can’t think of any other addiction that is paraded around as the “cool” thing to do as much as gambling. Imagine if Cigarette companies started doing “Smoke one pack get 5 packs free using Marlboro”.

Sports betting being illegal besides in Vegas was how it should have always been. What we have now is a disaster.

Clearly we need some change. And I’m not someone who says sports gambling should be illegal. You want to try to piss your money away on parlays? Go for it, I won’t stop you. But we need more guardrails.

It needs the same advertising restrictions as cigarettes. The apps need to have more strictly regulated limits on number of bets and amounts that people can wager. Tax the shit out of winnings too. And finally, most importantly, go after these people who are threatening athletes and their families.

We already have an over-incarceration problem, so I’m not saying lock them all up for years, but there needs to be some punishment. For first time threats that are deemed to not have been credible (i.e., no indication they made actual plans to carry out an attack), they should be getting fined, mandatory gambler’s anonymous, and be on a registry of potentially violent people that is publicly available. Most of these people are angry losers hiding behind a keyboard. For a lot of those people, consequences should scare them straight. For those who offend again or are god forbid willing to act on their threats, they should face jail time.

So do people have a problem with gambling itself or the lack of regulations for it?

Honestly, this is real loser behavior. I play DFS NBA too, but I don’t blame players or get upset when I lose. I only use money I can afford to spend plus I’m only using my winnings at this point. Still, you see people completely lose their minds on DFS pages it’s wild. Athletes and their families shouldn’t have to deal with that.
