[OC] A statistical look into the Pistons so far, and why they’re a serious contender.
Detroit has the best record in the NBA, the best record against the top 10 teams (by a considerable amount), they have the most clutch wins (23) while also having the second fewest clutch losses (9) in the league (OKC is 14-9, SAS is 19-10).
There’s a lot of criticism about Detroit’s 3 point shooting, but Detroit is 19th in 3P% (35%). OKC is 13th at 36.2%. SAS is 23rd at 34.7%. It’s not even their main point source. DEN, NYK, and MIN are in the top 4 of 3P%, but is it more likely a team will have a rough shooting night or take the night off on D? DEN ranks 24th in DRTG behind the Lakers!
The Pistons have the 2nd best defense in the NBA, but has been the best defense for a few months now. How many teams have a 1A eraser? They have 3 guys in the top 6 in steal rate (Ausar, Javonte, and Ron). They also have DPOY candidate Beef Stew and Paul Reed if injuries happen.
Who is the Pistons #2? Can Duren do it? Detroit has 4 players who have scored 30+ points this year, plus Duncan Robinson, Javonte Green, Caris LeVert, Tobias Harris, Daniss Jenkins all more than capable of scoring 20+. Maybe Ausar and Ron can take advantage of their situations.
What about playoff experience you say? Ok then boot the Spurs from contention cuz they haven’t been in the playoffs since 2018-19. But on the flip side? Not only is it rare to win back-to-backs (3 in the last 22 years), teams are even more likely to lose in the finals the next year (4⁄22) or miss it (15⁄22).
Playing so many extra games is a hurdle most teams don’t overcome. It’s exhausting and physically damaging. J Dub is injured. SGA is injured. Jokic has missed a ton of time. Gordon is perpetually injured as of late. If the playoffs is a war of attrition, take a look at who’s susceptible.
And if the West is so much better than the East (it’s not for the first time in years), then the road to the finals and the pounding the West Champion takes should be a bigger drain than the East champion, right? Also, it doesn’t really seem like the Knicks can stop the Pistons out East. But it does look like Cade is an MVP contender and the best 2-way player in that group of 3.
