A reporter asks Nikola Jokic a question in Spanish during the 2026 All-Star weekend. Jokic: “I don’t know how to speak, it’s Luka”
Should have pretended that he understood the question and just answer ‘sí’ with a serious face.

now that I think about it I havent seen them both in the same room before and if I think about it some more I have quite a few times actually
yeah same, my brain keeps trying to separate them but they’re always together somehow
All white people look the same to me
Same here it’s why I can’t use mirrors. Too confusing - like when a bear sees its own reflection - and then I attack the mirror thinking it’s a rival male white.
I think maybe it’s because Porzingis also speaks Spanish fluently (as Luka, he also played in Spain prior to going to the NBA) so this reporter might have assumed all stars from Eastern Europe speak Spanish?
Edit: I think Domantas Sabonis might speak Spanish too, as his father played for Madrid and he was also playing in Spain prior to going to Gonzaga
Helps that Europeans tend to be multilingual and Spanish is one of the easiest languages to pick up. Someone from eastern Europe who already speaks english/home language/and potentially a neighboring one like Russian German Romanian Italian etc would be conversational in Spanish within 6 months of living there if they make the effort
Almost no chance your average European picks up Spanish in 6 months. That would be an extreme rarity.
Also, there is nothing easy about Spanish. It is hard to learn because writing, reading and listening are completely different activities and the people speak like they are trying to cool hot food with their mouth.
What are you even saying? The language is phonetical, it’s written consistently with the pronunciation. English and French are the ones that are not consistent in that sense.
The difficulty comes from a grammar that is much more complex than English, but compared to other languages is not that bad.
I think the people disagreeing with my comment are American and have experiences with LatAm Spanish too. Mainland Spanish is a bit easier, its more standardized where dialects make conversing with South Americans in Spanish hard as different people you meet will speak a bit differently. But the Spanish you’d learn in school or from books/tapes in European is basically identical to how anyone in Madrid would speak, which is where Luka played.
Plus if you’re from any French speaking country or Italy it gets even easier…

Also, nearly half of Europe speaks a romance language, which gives them a head start on learning Spanish to some extent. Plus at any given time, nearly half the Euroleague is composed of clubs from romance language countries. Which means the only Europeans who wouldn’t be easily able to pick up Spanish are those who grow up in Slavic/Germanic countries and play basketball in Slavic/Germanic countries. And among European basketball players, that’s probably not more than 1⁄3. Not to mention that outside of English, Spanish is probably the most useful language in the US, and a top 3 most useful language worldwide, so many of those would have an incentive to learn Spanish as well.
Unless its very specific mexican or peruvian accents, people go out of their way to find the most difficult way to talk lol
The hardest has to be carribbean spanish where they drop s’s and replace r’s with l’s imo
No idea how that comment is being upvoted lol. Just typical Europe good, America bad Reddit nonsense.
The average european Chad
Dunno man, I’m English who learnt French as a kid and I picked up Spanish to the level of a conversational 8 year old in a year of living there, with a bit of study but not too much.
If you know the bones of one of the other Latin languages it’s definitely one of the easier languages. Native Italian, French and Portuguese speakers seem to have it built in.
“Average” European.
Average Romance speaker? Slavic speaker? Germanic? Finno-Ugric? Basque? Lol.
I know Reddit jerks off Europeans and being bilingual but WHAT? An Eastern European is not just learning Spanish with ease lol
The only reason Luka and Porzingus know Spanish is because of their time overseas playing basketball in Spanish speaking countries. Someone speaking Slovenian is having a much harder time learning Spanish than English speakers.
More like two months:)
Jovic is fluent too, more fluent than Jaime Jaquez funny enough. He played for Madrid I believe
Yes, Sabonis also speaks very good Spanish.
Or the reporter mistakenly thought Jokic played in Spain before coming over, too. Spain is probably the top domestic European league, so makes sense that a lot of the top NBA Europeans came through there.
So weird to me how this guy has been the unequivocal best player in the world for like the last 5 years. ESPN doesn’t even pretend like there’s any competition Lmao. It went from LeBron to Kawhi to Giannis and then to Joker, and just hasn’t moved since.
Was it really ever Kawhi? I feel like even though Kawhi won the championship in 2019, I would have said Giannis was the best player.
Regular season Kawhi has never been the best player in the league, but playoff Kawhi has been very close.
Playoff Kawhi in 2019 was the man. All years since he has either choked or been injured
I realize its a fallacious argument but had his shot against the 76ers not gone in to win the series, we look at Embiid a lot differently and Kawhi’s legacy is entirely different as well.
Would the raptors not have still won in overtime?
Sure they could’ve. I just watched it again. I thought they were down one but you’re right, it was tied.
And then it goes to OT 🤯
Kahwi wqs absolutely the best player in 2019. He was always around there, but finally had a year to display it and then gone again.
In the postseason he was the best
Not necessarily regarded as the best in the regular season that year
Harden and KD both had phenomenal regular seasons that year
AND Giannis, sorry
But we had thst while bron was number 1 too, its about both not one or the other. Kawhi in 2019 def had the crown
Not “for the year” though
I’m not so sure, Kawhi had one of the greatest individual postseasons ever en route to the championship.
Kawhi Leonard’s 2019 playoff run: 30.5 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 3.9 APG, 1.7 SPG, 62.0 TS%. Only Michael Jordan & LeBron James have scored more points in a single playoff run.
I mean Shai had a great playoffs and won MVP but we’re not calling him the best in the NBA right now.
Plenty of people did, and even more would if Jokic wasn’t putting up numbers that can’t be denied
Fair point, I just don’t think Giannis was such a lock for the best player in 2019 (even at the end of the regular season). Definitely in the conversation but not the only one
Im suprised Kobe never beat that. Surely he would have in 06 if he didnt quit against the suns?
Saying Giannis as the best player in 2019 is a genuinely indefensible take if you’re factoring the playoffs.
Curry, Durant, Kawhi were all better than him in 2019
LeBron and AD were injured or not in the 2019 playoffs, and they were better than Giannis in 2020
If i could have either for a 2019 playoff run im taking kawhi every time
Not like giannis is a bad choice but kawhi was on some shit that year
That was impossible to say after the playoffs because of how the Raptors shut him down in their series.
Kawhi for about a month there. But realistically it went from Giannis to Jokic
2019 playoff Kawhi is some of the best ball I’ve ever seen
Well lowkey he has a lot to prove this season. The tides might be shifting (i.e. if Shai wins MVP and the championship again…). He could lose the title if he doesn’t work to earn it going forwards
A European big being the best player in the NBA is uncomfortable for ratings lol. I think Giannis, Luka, Wemby, Jokic all being the best is hilarious.
Idk I feel like the Rape of Oklahoma by Wemby pretty much closed the door to Shai propaganda but yeah we’ll see. I’d like to see Wemby take the next step.
Y’all are so weird who the fuck actually talks like that.
This is actually really rich coming from your fanbase which has routinely accused ppl of getting their anti shai talking points from some KKKremlin…in game threads…when I’m remarking on Alex or Lu.
Lmao because some fans have said some stuff i’m not allowed to call out weird behavior?? What is your logic?
I do not like the Oklahoma City Thunder
The what
The fuck…
LMAO
We’re really just rewriting history
Tbh, who else would it in the last 5 years?
Luka if he didn’t get traded and if Kyrie & Klay were healthy maybe bcz Mavs record would be great
Luka doesn’t play defense. As great as Doncic is offensively at least Jokic tries on the defensive end.
LeBron was the best player in the world for like a decade
Because Jokic is the best player. Or at least no one should be surprised if someone says Jokic is the best player for the last 5 years, Shai, Luka, Embiid, Giannis all are or were in the same tier on moments too.
I like how he emphasizes “I don’t speak Spanish…I REALLY don’t ” it tracks because he is known for pretending he doesn’t speak English either so makes sense someone may doubt him.
