Advanced defense stats tend to. On its face, driving against tall players isn’t smart unless you’re in position to blow past them or draw a foul. Definitely not a great measure of skill for bigs.

I scouted DeMar DeRozan’s defense earlier this year because Bucks were desperate for a SF as our only SF on the Roster (Taurean Prince) is injured and out for the season.

Demar has a reputation of being a bad defender and what I saw wasn’t great but it wasn’t horrible either. He kept his feet moving and mostly was able to stay in front of his assignment. Most importantly he was TRYING on defense.

What I’m saying is I’m not surprised he’s listed as bottom 3 but my eyeball test say’s it’s due to playing on a horrible defensive team. If we put Demar Derozan on the Thunder tomorrow his defensive ranking would be no where near the bottom 10. He would be somewhere around the middle of the entire NBA.

DeMar unfortunately is really bad when moving laterally, he dies on screens a lot. His off ball defense is also pretty poor, he doesn’t have great instincts when rotating. He puts in effort but he is not a positive defender.

I agree that he’s not a positive defender but he has good size and puts in the effort and keeps his feet moving. I’d rank him in 55th percentile as in 55% of all NBA Small Forward’s are better defenders than him.

He’s certainly not bottom 1% that this ranking would suggest.

Maybe my watching Bobby Portis play defense for the last 5 years has made me too generous?
