In large part due to things out of their control, they’ve been raised to be incredibly emotionally stunted and afraid to put themselves out there. Not only did COVID rob many of them of formative social development, but society fed them social media addiction at a wildly young age and it came with isolation and self-surveillance culture. Being publicly enthusiastic about something you’re passionate about is, in a way, showing vulnerability, which is something they’ve learned is very dangerous in a world where every negative opinion about them gets effectively streamlined into their brains by the most powerful people in the world.

I’m 34, so not exactly ancient, but I was largely spared from having social media in the way we have it now as a teen. I don’t feel as annoyed with younger people as I do feel incredibly bad for them. Adolescence is already such a mindfuck of an experience, I can’t imagine having all the shit they’ve dealt with added on top of it.

I’m in your generation, we got lucky experiencing an analog world and social media in it’s infancy was way less malignant than it is now. I agree with all of this a hundred percent. especially in America, pre ⁹⁄₁₁ the vibe was so optimistic, there were problems but it felt like we were going in the right direction. the world united and fixed the hole in the ozone ffs.

I do think it’s important to call out the negativity, and more importantly, set the tone and not be afraid to be positive.

Basketball has been an escape for me and gotten me through some tough times. Sure I love the drama and shit posts and vaguely implying that I’m Kevin Durant but I’m here out of love for the game.

i appreciate this take a lot. i’m 26 so kind of between you and that age group, and it has taken a concerted effort to curtail my teenage social media addiction and establish a better relationship with myself. even reddit is a slippery one for me that i have to really watch, but exchanges like this one feel okay. just have to be mindful about finding myself in less thoughtful comment threads and total time spent online in general. it has been very difficult for me at times. and i don’t think i grew up in nearly as toxic a social media landscape as people even 5 years younger than me, let alone more than that.

the divide and distain toward today’s teenagers is exacerbated by what seems like a cyclical tendency of generations to not understand and to kinda hate on the next generation. versions of this have been happening well before social media, like honestly thousands of years probably, certainly at least hundreds. but society is developing way faster than it used to, which widens the gap in understanding, and now you have people in their 30s and 40s and beyond all over social media as well, indoctrinating themselves just as hard in the toxicity while also hating on people half their ages who they don’t understand.

it’s so culturally and psychologically complicated, probably a sociologist’s dream tbh because we are putting our brains through the fucking wringer on a wide scale. but the small scale solution is very simple in principle: find whatever works for you to keep from being online more than a little bit. if everyone does this, i think the world improves a ton. meditation and artistic hobbies have become the solution i’m trying to take. i’m sure other things work for other people. and on that note, i think ill get off reddit for the day with this. thanks for the insightful comment :)
