When they were on the Rockets, Melo said Daryl Morey told him his services were no longer needed and the team plane left without him. CP3 said he got a plane for his wife and Melo because he “wasn’t gonna let them embarrass my dawg.”
If Morey never wins a championship, his entire legacy is going to be stories like this
I would love to know how many GMs have been MBAs and if having one actually had an impact lol
If it’s anything like the corporate world than no no impact whatsoever
No impact???
Who else is going to help your team circle back, pivot, review the year from an annual perspective, and promote synergy?
Let’s stick a pin in this for now.
But my team need more action items if they’re going to maintain velocity!
Per my last email…
There are several things pins should be stuck in, this ain’t one of them…
Hey, man. It’s called leadership, and it’s more important than actual skills because the people who make the most money say it is.
I hate how the concept of “leadership” is this amorphous always-shifting thing that can never be quantified or delineated so it just allows people to project their own stupid bullshit onto what they perceive leadership as. Like when a billionaire is hailed as somebody “leading society into technological innovation” even though he’s just a businessman that just acquired a company after the idea had already been formulated and executed to reality by actual engineers and designers and other such roles.
I’m actually in stitches rn lmao PTSD I hate working with MBAs
An someone w an mba this is hilarious in an often true way 😆
Without the MBAs how could we ever understand how to measure impact and drive actionable initiatives for our stakeholders?
We need to drive down Opex and throw it in useless Capex just because!!
No impact would be a radical improvement. MBAs are fucking terrible for long term success in most businesses. MBAs killed Boeing.
In fact, both NBER and JBR have published studies recently showing that MBA-led firms across all sectors perform worse over a 5 year window than firms led by non-MBA management, and the difference is especially pronounced in companies that provide specialized or technical services.
yeah i was about to comment that the shit corporate raiding net negative impact that this class of fool embodies had has cost people their retirement and lives, quality products, consumer friendly policy, etc.
Toys R Us was profitable but killed by private equity.
Not an MBA thing but I lump all those guys together - more synergistic
MBAs can make poor decisions in any situation without having even a surface-level understanding of the situation, so there is certainly some impact.
Haha yes this is so true. My company kind of paywalls any promotions to management to those with MBAs.
When you talk to them it’s so excruciating especially when they are your leader, and they are a bad manager or lack knowledge for your product/BU …resulting in them hindering team performance and growth.
Idk man the density of buzzwords per email would drop significantly
negative is still an impact
My former marketing manager had an MBA and she was so bad at her job, like god damn. Interns used to run routes around her on certain subjects
It’s a great signaling mechanism for easily avoiding douchebags
Ok I know Morey is an asshole, but he’s not in the league because he’s a MBA, or because he’s good at managing player relationships lol.
He’s the GM because he’s a huge data nerd, and he was instrumental at popularizing the heavily data based decision making in sports.
Most MBAs are bullshiters because they were full of shit before their MBA. Morey wasn’t really, he was just an asshole data dude.
The degree just gave him the credentials, it didn’t make him an asshole, he’s probably just born an asshole lol.
When I founded my most recent circus company, I partnered with an investor with an MBA. He spent the entire time doing drugs, trying to fuck me, and puttering around with spreadsheets and charts that had zero to do with what actually needed to be done. When I, a lowly woman and performer/director with an English degree, bought him out after his 500th emotional meltdown, revenue went up 500% the next year.
These assholes are talentless and have cratered our economy and institutions.
what is a circus company
It’s…. a circus company?
oh like literally the company that puts on the productions
Yep. Been in the business 20 years.
That sounds in tents.
Damn, that took an unexpected turn. Lowkey glad /u/esports_consultant asked.
Here I was imagining your typical company with clowns for directors and Dumbo being the CEO with his golden parachute.
You gotta admit, that’s not one you hear about every day!
Man, shout outs English degrees. I can’t relate to owning a company or anything, but talking to some of these corpo type, business degree holders is crazy. Like imagine if you actually read a book in college lol
Morey definitely had an impact. Aside from Steph, his Rockets are why the league plays the way it does today.
I think like every big change in the world, is a lot more complex than the main narratives.
There are a lot of changes that impacted current NBA basketball. The Phoenix Suns, Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, all had “innovations” that informed things that are done pretty much all around the board now.
I feel like Morey was very important for the same reasons that makes him a flawed leader. He took the efficiency statistics to their ultimate conclusions by seeing players like pieces in a board instead of human beings.
He’s the Billy Beane of the NBA.
Absolutely revolutionized player evaluation and how the sport was played. But his lack of success and his relationship with players is definitely a detriment to his legacy.
Damn, I have an MBA but I’m just a middle class wage slave, so I’m clearly not doing the whole finance bro, business jargon bullshit end of it right.
I think when they handed me my degree, I was supposed to hand in my empathy and human decency, but somehow forgot.
They’re supposed to do it when you first enroll - I think you missed orientation
With the false sense of confidence regarding subject-matter authority that a typical MBA grad has, they have caused damaged everywhere.
He’s already a champion asshole.
EDIT: I am not calling you an asshole, I am saying Daryl Morey is like the GOAT of assholes. He’s a champion, of being an asshole.
Thought you were a champion asshole for a second too
Depends on who you ask, I have my moments like all of us. We are all Daryl Morey sometimes.
The importance of punctuation.
Maybe a set of ellipses would help. Moreso the sentence is structured in a way that reads with conflicting meaning, despite being grammatically correct. If anything, it could be re-written, but then, it is just a comment on an NBA sub.
Carmelo was a negative on the court for much of his later career. Simply the reality of the style of player he was.
Harden and CP3 pushed for the move and he was ass. Gone after 10 games
Regardless of opinion that decision after only 10 games was nothing less than an overreaction.
I’ll always be critical of a lot of the things Melo does and says, but Melo was not the problem with that Houston team. They scape goated him for no legitimate reason. It always felt like it was D’antoni’s revenge for New York.
Im sorry but according to the game of zones documental, both parties had some blame, Melo for not getting over about being a role player, and D’Antoni for the way he was sent away (via catapult)
People only put up with Carmelo’s shit because he produced on the court. Like, D’Antoni may have been taking revenge on him, but I don’t blame the guy for getting that revenge.
Sure but I mean, Morey was the one who signed him two months prior, presumably aware of where Melo was in his career and what he had left to offer. I can’t imagine anything substantial changed about him in two months.
Harden and CP did not push for him to get cut lol. They discussed it in the video. Melo also was not why that Houston team had a slow start, plus he already agreed to a reduced role off the bench at that point. Harden and CP missed games start the season. Eric Gordon was shooting his career worst numbers from the field. Melo had two stinkers before he got cut but the 5 games prior to that he was putting up 20ppg on 50/44/70 off the bench for the team.
They pushed for him to be acquired, not cut, is what the poster above was saying
Here’s what was said at the time: https://old.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/diruyl/holmes_rockets_official_on_why_carmelo_didnt_fit/
It should also be noted that Carmelo was rumored to have clashed with Denver Nuggets head coach Jeff Bzdelik during Carmelo’s time there, which help lead to him being fired, and he refused to run Mike D’Antoni’s system in New York. Bzdelik was D’Antoni’s assistant coach in charge of the Rocket’s switching defense.
I don’t think GMs really have legacies like that the way players do. Winning one championship doesn’t change too much.
It’s only people who build dynasties or have really strong personalities that get remembered.
What? GM’s absolutely have legacies and many of them are built on the back of a single championship.
Ujiri, Presti, and Stevens are all great recent examples of people that cemented their legacy by winning a championship.
GM’s cement their legacy by making bold moves that result in championships.
That even works with Coaches like Doc Rivers.
Ainge built the Roster and Thibs was an Assistant but Doc Rivers still gets glazed in the NBA world over 1 Championship 20yrs ago.
Doc Rivers also has a ton of losses while up 3-1 or 3-0 in the Playoffs since then.
Rivers is also famous for ruining the Orlando Magic’s chance at a “Big 3” with Tracy McGrady, Grant Hill and Tim Duncan because Rivers refuses to allow Duncan to bring his family on the Team Plane so Duncan stayed with the Spurs.
Jerry Krause built the team for six championships and yet Bulls fans still clown him and gave all the credits to MJ.
Daryl Morey is a liar
And I’ll never be a part of the organisation he’s a part of ever again
Let me say that again.
Now where were we, Chinese kids?
Ah yes, how to get fouled shooting 3s
It’s a bit but I think Morey legitimately might have aspd. The way he speaks with no regard for others has been consistent.
Don’t forget that insane article that was lavishing praise on him for being a raging sociopathic asshole in daily life.
Written by KOC and seemingly intended to lavish praise upon that type of behavior.
I’m not a gung-ho KOC hater like some, but acting like the way Morey treats people and their time as if it’s a respectable thing was insane. There’s “being efficient” with your time and there’s “showing zero respect for any other people you encounter”, and he’s much more the latter than the former.
Daryl Morey sucks the veins out of a snickers bar
Maturing is realizing that Harden was right all along
Daryl Morey is a liar x3
X4, he’s so good at it
He then said Morey is added to the list of liars he calls out this summer
Can’t wait for the NBA copypasta singularity
Sources: /u/farmoosesomething is beside himself. Trolling through r/nba begging (thru comments) everyone else for instructions on how to combine memes
That Daryl Morey boomed me
No one thought Harden was in the wrong except Sixers fans lol
I personally don’t fault him for anything. I like that he acknowledges it’s all business and if he’s unhappy with how things go professionally, he’s going to ask out. Still love Harden, but I get why some of our fans don’t.
I despise hardens way of playing ball. Him bending the rules for carry’s and travels really started the downfall of the product
But ironically he’s most hated for his team hopping or feuding with front offices/co stars and in those instances he was never wrong. He was right to leave every single team he did or any disagreement with another player he was right.
Thunder low balled him. So he went to Houston and became a mega star. Feuded with Dwight and he was right, Dwight was always the issue. Feuded with Chris Paul and it came out Chris Paul is an insufferable asshole who burns every bridge. Went to the nets and feuded with KD and kyrie for not taking winning seriously. He was playing on a torn hamstring trying to keep the team afloat and kyrie wouldn’t go get a simple vaccine, and Durant was too busy on twitter and refused to backup the front office or harden. Went to the sixers, helped Embiid get an mvp just for Morey to double cross him and refuse to pay him so that he could have cap space for his “big fish” (which ended up being washed Paul George lmao). Now he went to the clippers and it turned out they were a dumpster fire as well.
Went to the nets and feuded with KD and kyrie for not taking winning seriously
Based on the leaked messages, it seems like both Harden and KD were united in their hatred for Kyrie at that point
Yet harden and the front office were frustrated because Durant refused to be a leader and speak up or try and talk to kyrie. Reportedly he just had a fuck it attitude and we can win without harden.
Harden is definitely hated way more for his foul baiting than his team hopping.
“Maturing is realizing that lying is bad”
Harden and Jimmy never been wrong
Jimmy wanted 60mil over 3 years and after 68 games into that contract…not even ONE season he tore his acl and has effectively become dead weight….but sure heat def should’ve paid lmao
He got what he wanted from the Warriors so that was his market value, the Heat just didn’t want to pay it
Not sure what there is to cry about
The Miami Heat currently have Terry Rozier and Tyler Herro taking up 58 million dollars of cap with less games given.
Reminder that Daryl Morey parks illegally then doesn’t pay the tickets instead racking up hundreds of tickets before trading in his car and negotiating with the dealership to pay it off after it gets booted
this true? lmao
https://www.theringer.com/2022/10/17/nba/daryl-morey-philadelphia-76ers-joel-embiid
Dude tried to pass it off as “efficiency” when it’s actually “this guy is a dick”
Generational levels of dick riding in that article
The KOC special
Go to KOC’s twitter and search Elon
I also remember he used to retweet dumb shit about how difficult it is allowing your kids to celebrate Halloween as a Christian.
Don’t want to be responsible for causing some douchebag singularity
Hey, what does Minnesota Coach and handsomest balding boy have to do with this?
Haha, he’s the good KOC. Kevin O’Connor is dork KOC.
Everything I read in that article is atrocious behavior by anyone much less someone who represents an NBA team. The fact that KOC acts like this is okay….smart even…is beyond me.
<image>
Or the time he was driving to the NCAA tournament in a frenzy to catch a tip-off and created his own left lane to beat the traffic.
read: he drove on the shoulder like an asshole
What kind of dogshit article is this lol?
“This man is so efficient by breaking the law that would result in the plebes being thrown into jail”.
KOC.
veryone would save time if we were drove illegally.
Like it’s clever to put a sex doll as a passenger to use the carpool lane
He’s so insane that he told this story to believing it made him look cool
The worst part is that bums like KOC actually did think this was a cool thing to do
He loves Elon the pedo too
Every example of “efficiency” is just inefficient stuff that he gets someone else to deal with for him…
that’s capitalism for ya:
efficiency just means you privatize profits and force all negative externalities on the public and commons
Just create your own left lane to beat the traffic, bro
lol this article is abysmal dogshit this guy actually thinks Morey is the coolest smartest guy ever by just being a piece of shit
Kevin O’Connor writing this article makes so much sense lol
absolutely bonkers article. it’s written in such a complimentary tone but everything he’s saying is batshit crazy
Yes. He has little respect for pretty much anything. It’s funny if he was a sitcom character but obviously insane as a real human quality
I could see an episode of Curb/or Costanza doing this
Yeah and if I’m not mistaken it was written by that douche KOC who also stans Elon Musk. He thinks all the asshole shit Morey does is badass
Kevin O’Connor is not even remotely well known enough to be referred to by his initials
Thank you! I didnt know who they were talking about, Kyle O’©Quinn? Maybe?
Right? I was thinking of the football coach and how he was involved with the ringer and Morey.
I’ve been out of the loop, when did KOC become garbage and not just a weird basketball nerd?
It started when he made the argument that Killian Hayes should go number one in the 2020 draft. It’s been all downhill from there…
Probably when his dad died
KOC has always sucked and his opinions had extremely little facts to back them up.
Kentavious Oldwell-Cope?
Morey voluntarily revealed that information, thinking it made him look smart and innovative.
Yea it’s from the ringer profile
Yes. Among other shitty things because he can’t be assed to be a decent human being.
Read the first half of this article. You’ll get a good impression of how Morey is, combined with the player anecdotes we have heard about him.
My favorite part about that was KOC writing that in a way that was supposed to portray Morey as some alpha cool guy when pretty much everyone was like “Daryl Morey sounds like a dick”
From what I’ve read about KOC, he seems like the kinda guy who would think that’s cool
Guys obsessed with being Alpha’s and saying other guys are cucked?
You too have seen his Twitter follows?
Steve Jobs, senior asshole emeritus, also did this. I wonder if Morey read about this and adopted the process. He may not even be a creative asshole, just a copycat douchebag.
The sheer number of Jobs emails that get shared around on LinkedIn showing how he “gets it done” and people should emulate him are ridiculous.
Every email just shows that Jobs was a massive asshole.
Jobs died of a treatable form of cancer because he thought he could cure it by eating fruit
Him dying preventably and Elon opening his mouth for any reason should prove to everyone that these guys aren’t special, they’re actually complete dipshits who won the genetic lottery and made it everyone else’s problem
Same with Jack Welch.
At my last company, our management team had facilities paint Welch quotes on the walls. Came in on a Monday and the quote that was visible from my cube was:
“An organization’s ability to learn, and translate that learning into action rapidly, is the ultimate competitive advantage.”
Opened up my inbox and there was an e-mail from the CEO, telling everyone that the quotes were put up to challenge and inspire us. He and his team honestly thought these would help morale.
Six months later they painted over them.
Dude would berate subordinates for ideas he deemed stupid…only to later then present those ideas as his own and take credit for it
He also just drives rental cars to the departures and calls the company to come pick it up when he is getting on the plane. Confirmed by Zach Lowe
Lol that is literally a Louis C.K. bit from his standup, I’m surprised anyone has the audacity to actually do it
Goddamn what an asshole.
Wait what kind of a dumb usa system is this, are the tickets connected to the car, not the owner?
It is absolutely attached to the owner but if there are enough unpaid parking tickets on a car the state government (depends on the state but this is the case in most states) can put a lien on the vehicle title it meaning it cannot legally be sold until that all those tickets are paid off.
Basically Morey isn’t gaming the system by doing this, if anything there’s a chance he has paid MORE by doing what he’s doing than if he just paid those parking tickets. When he trades in his car he basically has to give the dealership what is owed in fines so they can remove the lien and sell it themselves. I highly doubt the dealership is taking a loss and charges him a fee to go through that process for him. He could easily have an assistant just pay those fees. It’s hilarious that the whole situation was presented as some genius savant move when it’s nothing but a dude who thinks he’s too important to pay fines when he breaks the rules.
Once you’re rich and powerful enough in the USA, you can start getting away with more and more crimes.
Fines are the cost of doing something. So once you are rich enough fines are just extra cost of being rich and not actually a deterrent from doing antisocial behaviors.
r/antiwork ride with my dawg fuck upper management vibes
I haven’t seen that r/ in forever and seeing it gave me PTSD flashbacks to the mods interview on Fox, what a generational fumble.
Anyone who hasn’t had media training should think twice before going on TV with an antagonistic host. They will embarrass you.
You’re playing a game you have no experience with vs a professional.
They didn’t even ask any insane questions. It was self-inflicted.
That sub turned into a parody of itself after that too, shit was comical.
I think the most important part here is Melo was left off the team plane on what sounds like a road trip? That’s insane unless it was NY or something where they know Melo has a home.
Well, needing to get Melo a plane would indicate he needed to travel somewhere
I looked up the schedule.
Melo was let go the night before a game in San Antonio, and then the Rockets flew back to Houston for a game the next night.
Sounds like Morey gave him the option to either go back to Houston on his own immediately (it’s only a 3 hour drive) or spend the night in San Antonio and fly with the team the next day, so it’s not clear why he’s saying they stranded him there.
in the video it’s clear that it would just be super embarrassing to be on the team plane after they fired you. So CP3 and his wife getting a plane and flying back with Melo all on their own was a way to help him save face and be a good friend.
That was my interpretation too, which doesn’t quite fit all the Fuck Morey comments.
Melo only played 10 games for Houston and Morey offered him a ride home with the team the next day. He expected the Rockets to get him a private jet for a 200 mile trip just to avoid the embarrassment of having to see the other players?
These players live in a fantasy world.
I think the Fuck Morey comments are that if he had waited ONE DAY, he could have fired Melo at home. Choosing to do it on the last day of a road trip seems unnecessarily petty
Why couldn’t we let him go back in Houston the next day? Not taking a side, but firing anyone on a work trip is crazy.
That’s kind of the point, there was no reason I can think of that it couldn’t wait a few hours until they were at home
yeah and in chris paul’s mind, of course the only thing that could save this poor guy is hiring another private jet for two people to go 50 miles
it sounds like he was allowed to get on he just didn’t want to
I mean, thats gotta be awkward. They could have fired him when they got back. Does the one day make that big of a difference?
CP3 is just that dude,
Morey on the other hand tho
CP3 seems like an absolute dick on the court. A guy you just hate playing against and does all the little shit that is annoying as hell. But as soon as the game is over, he seems like one of nicest and most solid dudes there is
Daryl Morey’s ego and arrogance seems like his personality off the court just like his reputation as an executive. Over inflated and when you look more into it, disappointing
The Brad Marchand of NBA.
Morey is such a dweeb
Morey is a bum.
He gets all kinds of credit….but has won nothing. His nerd 🤓 media friends anoint him as a genius yet Masai and Sam Presti have built better teams and have titles …
He gets all kinds of credit
Are the supposed credits in the room with us? He gets all the hate these days lol
He was getting a lot of credit when he was in Houston, but then shortly after everyone realized that all of that success was really just due to lucking into the Harden trade and little more
This sub adored him, his advanced analytics approach and all the bs, media as well. And with all the stats twisting and bullshit he has sold to people, he never won anything. Guy is a fraud, its just slow ass nephews on reddit are bit late to the party
Would Masai have won a title if KD didn’t get injured?
While Morey had CP3 go down.
Possibly, they beat them both times in the regular season with both teams healthy I believe. You can change a lot of nba history if you turn injury sliders off
Yes but one GM being a bum because the second star went down against a better Warriors team feels a bad process
“Oh what?? Come on… he f*cked me in New York”
— Mike D’Antoni probably
Melo is a star and stars should be star-ters
Let me ask the computers
“Carmelo should back up Marquese Chriss”
That’s fucked up. Anyone who’s been laid off or fired for reasons outside of their control knows exactly how this feels.
Well, not exactly, the loss of income is a much bigger deal for the average person
Harden was 1000% in the right for going public about Morey’s business practices
Reddit loves to hate Melo. Didn’t he go on to have a couple productive seasons off the bench after this for Portland and LA?
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed his time on the Blazers. He had a good attitude, passed the ball and shot well from 3. Not much defense but that was never his thing.
Yes, once Melo realized he wasn’t the player he once was, he was a great roleplayer. I think his image would be better if he embraced it a few years earlier, but in the long run I don’t think it should tarnish his image.
Yeah, he and Vince Carter both went from “past his prime former star who thinks he’s still a star and tries to play like one, but isn’t” to “savvy vet who accepts his role and plays it well and remains dangerous” suprisingly quickly.
Melo does not get enough respect for being one of the greatest scorers of all time. And people focus way to much on he never won a ring. While meanwhile spouting shit about how we have to move away from Ringz culture. Literally every play from Melo’s era says he was one of the hardest guys to guard. That you could do everything right and he’d just score on you repeatedly. Melo is an all time great and I’m tired of people acting like he’s not
bro. accidentally clicked on OP’s name. DONT do it!!
Bro is both a virgin and a pedophile
oof
Embarrassed means taking a regular flight? These people are so out of touch with reality.
Do you just have zero ability to comprehend meaning? Because that’s clearly not what it meant.
Melo was a headcase tho. He legit was stil selfish at that time and bitched about his role non stop. Wait for the rockets posters to tell you guys.
Yeah Morey is an asshole but he is just more honest about treating players like assets more than other guys.
Melo was WASHED. He was brought in as an experiment with that Houston team, he was playing 30 minutes per night and shooting 40% from the field and 32% from 3 on a still pretty high usage rate. When we cut him we opened up minutes for James Ennis and Danuel House, who were legitimately much better than Melo at that point in his career.
We lost that San Antonio game, and went on a five game winning streak immediately after his services were no longer needed.
NBA fans care about “player loyalty to teams”, but teams do not care at all about players, even if they dedicated 10+ years to a franchise.
they can get fired just as fast and easily as a part-time employee at a fast food restaurant.
Hot take but management saw Melo was not going to work and didn’t want him on the team, what else are they supposed to do? These guys always say it’s a business and this story sounds like… business?
I don’t think I’ve ever rooted against a non-player as hard as I root against Daryl Morey.
You can hear still hear the entitlement in Melo lmao. Some star players still don’t realize that’s it’s them, not the org. Melo you couldn’t guard and you were still taking too many middies when that wasn’t their play-style.
He took 120 shots, and over half of them were 3s. he cut the mid ranges in half in houston and came off the bench. Why are we carrying water for someone that was notorious for treating players like shit.
Melo, what would you say you do here?
“Well I’m a STAR, and STARS should be STARters”
KD’s Burner: “Chris Paul doesn’t know sh*t.”
This is the other side of the business that management avoids discussing because it reveals the cruel and cold nature of that industry. Melo and CP3 will forever be legends in this game. It’s unfortunate that they never won a championship, but I’m glad I got to witness their greatness during their prime. They were truly special.
CP3 deserves shit for bringing Melo to that team in the first place. Houston needed defensive wings and Melo wanted to jab step inside the arc.
I don’t understand why Melo would even want to get on the team plane if he’s no longer going to be playing? It’s not like it was the last flight out before an apocalypse. He didn’t need a private jet to the next city 😂
