I was born and raised in Tennessee where I could be in Mississippi or Alabama within an hour. I’d never live in Mississippi. At least in Alabama you could be in Birmingham.
Why’s it so bad
I’m in my mid 30s and my whole life it’s basically been in the bottom 10 in the US of any major category you don’t want to be in the bottom of. Infrastructure, education, healthcare, literacy, life expectancy, median income, infant mortality rate, poverty rate, etc.
The good news is I think it’s the cheapest state to live in average cost wise (or was). It also has had improving numbers in some of these categories because there’s not much lower they can go so any progress is great. It’s just always been the punching bag for all the states around it. In November the Democrats just broke the Republicans supermajority in the Mississippi senate. Republicans have had 2⁄3 of the senate there for over a decade. It’s not like it’s even now, it’s just technically under 2⁄3 so it’s just a majority and not a supermajority.

It’s interesting for me that you asked because my wife and I actually talked through all this like a months ago and just did where would we live in X state if we HAD to move there and did every state around Tennessee. Tennessee is so long that it borders 8 states, which is tied for the most with Missouri. Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia all had places that we could talk ourselves into. Neither of us could pick a place in Mississippi. Being able to buy a house for crazy cheap isn’t worth how bad everything else is there all combined together to become a megazord of depression. I hope it gets better, I really do because there are hard working good people there but I only have found one other state I just absolutely wouldn’t live in and that’s Nebraska. I’ve driven across the whole state a few times and spent the night there. I’d probably become suicidal if I had to be there.

FYI, I grew up in southern Mississippi, went to college in Memphis, but haven’t lived in the south for 40 years.
I had a friend who lasted all of 5 years before demanding his employer move him back to Georgia, who cares if the house is cheap if it requires you live in basically a barb-wire compound totally isolated from the rest of the world, where you HAVE to send your kid to private school if you want them literate, where everyone is basically terrified of The Other.

It’s kinda insane how good the Mavs center rotation is now. Lively, Gafford, Bagley, Powell, and Cisse. Just a few years ago it was Dwight starting with Javale McGee coming off the bench. What a turn around.
They might want to re-sign Bagley just in case. Lively and Gafford are often injured, and Powell is supposedly retiring.
