I think the Kings are correct in their assumption that the guys they are replacing him with will lose plenty.

Not saying this is the case, but players play through pain/discomfort and get surgery right after the season all the time. Like, Josh Hart messed his finger up last year and kept playing because he thought he’d still be a net positive for the team, and they seemingly agreed.

This could easily be the flip side of that, where Lavine could play with some pain or just get the surgery now, and he and the team decide to do it sooner. This helps the tank for the team and gives him more time to recover while still getting paid.

Lavine isn’t doing it just so they get a better pick, like you said, but in this case his interests align with the teams.

A lot of players are playing through injuries. They’d normally wait for the offseason to get surgery, but when their team is tanking they get them early so they can have more time to ramp up for the next season and recover.
