Rose had surgery in mid-May. Putting aside that ACL repairs are treated much better than 12 years ago, even if a full year is required Kyrie has lots of time to come back and play games.

Probably because they were still deluding themselves into thinking they could be frisky with a team featuring AD, Kyrie and Klay alongside Flagg.

It only took a small handful of games to completely disprove that fantasy and show that ditching any pretense of trying to compete now would be a worthwhile approach for the franchise.

Or maybe even more likely they were hoping to be able to showcase Irving and AD hoping they’d make each other look good in order to convert both into useful assets to build around Flagg in the future. Instead AD went full street clothes and they ended up getting what they got for him.

Still at least they got to where they needed to get to in the end and maximize their tank before Silver starts messing with the lotto yet again because of all the pearl clutching over tanking this year in the media.

It’s been just under a year - he got hurt on March 3rd. With that said, I think ACL injuries don’t usually take a year to recover from - it’s not uncommon for players to come back in like 10 months. Shumpert tore his ACL in the 2012 playoffs and came back in January of 2013.

I think it’s good to take more time off, especially when Kyrie is older and he wouldn’t really be playing for anything if he came back to the 12 seed in March, but I’m not surprised they expected him to return this year.

It’s really depends on the player and how severe the tear was. Grant Williams tore his ACL and took about 13 months to return. I also can’t imagine Kyrie would be at full go immediately either which makes the return even less appealing unless the team was maybe better.

I don’t think a 33 year old, coming off an ACL tear was going to get in the way of tanking. The 2 most recent examples of all-star level players returning from tears are Kawhi and Murray. Kawhi took 1.5 years to start playing like himself again, Jamal took almost 2 full years. They were both quite a bit younger when they sustained those injuries than Kyrie.

It’s an ACL tear, it’s perfectly fine to sit out a season to make sure it heals properly. They’re also not scamming fans by listing him day-to-day for 20 games.

What’s stupid is having your all-star suit up to sell tickets, but sitting them in the last quarter to lose the game. And then having them start the next game too, so it’s not like they suffered an in-game injury that kept them from coming in when the game was close.

We need language to differentiate between the two forms of tanking.

Tanking used to be management building a team that can’t win - the Process teams weren’t trying to lose, their roster wasn’t enough to win.

This new brand of tanking where coaches get involved is a significant level up in my opinion. Regardless of how bad the team is, once the game starts teams should be trying to win, but this new brand of tanking has coaches making decisions contrary to winning the game.

The NFL has teams that want to lose games for draft capital, but I still feel like once the ball is kicked off both teams are trying to win, and we’ve crossed a threshold where that isn’t the case in the NBA in the last couple of years.

I guess it’s an unpopular opinion, but if you are a Jazz fan, I would think that you would want your team to lose to get a higher pick, but you also get to see your team’s best players play.

If you are an opposing fan, you get to win, while also seeing the other team’s best players.

Kyrie is almost 34 years old and has a loooong injury history and he’s recovering from a very significant knee soft tissue injury. If he were to come back and play I don’t think he’d be adding that many Ws to the Mavs record. It’s the smart play to keep him out for draft purposes and Kyrie’s healing, but I think Kyrie is done as an elite player in this league. Too many injuries on a guy who relies on quickness to get his space for shots. Good for him for getting that bag from the Mavs - I thought it was a dumb contract at the time - but I can’t imagine anyone will be paying him 8 figures a year anymore

As much as Kyrie annoyed me with the Nets, I think his skill set is still valuable even with old age and injuries. Idk if he’ll be as good as he was with the Cavs, but he’ll still be elite.

His game isn’t really athleticism like Giannis. It’s pure basketball skill. Only concern I would have is how he holds up defensively, especially with young guards who are faster.

Kyrie is recovering from a torn ACL. This is the exact same approach Denver took with Jamal Murray.

Dallas has been competitive in most games this season, they haven’t been sitting healthy players depending on the matchup. Hell, guys like Gafford who probably should sit for an extended period to recover from the ankle injury he keeps reaggravating are playing through it. Flagg even played through a rolled ankle only to injure it again in the next game, and he still missed just a single game before coming back.

The difference between what Dallas has done this year and what Utah is doing is pretty clear if you remove your homer goggles. Just look at our b2b matchup earlier this season where yall sat or benched your best players and got blown out by a bad Mavs team in both games. The Mavs have a significantly worse roster than Utah which is why they felt they needed to shut guys down for that matchup.

ACL surgery timelines are a lot quicker than they used to be but sometimes I wonder if they should be. It’s still a serious injury, and Kyrie is 33. If I were a Mavs fan (and honestly as an NBA fan in general) I’d rather he come back at full strength with an offseason of training than risk reinjury in a season that’s pretty much over.

100% the right move for Kyrie. Retear rates and contralateral injuries for ACL reconstructions are way higher than people realize. Every additional month of rehab he can put in between now and his first game back at full NBA speed will significantly reduce the risk of reinjury.

Sitting out until next season means he would have been out for 1 years & 7 months so I don’t see him falling off much. Maybe 22/5/6 with the ability to go off here & there.

Flagg, Kyrie & the lottery pick will be an amazing trio, they just have to draft the perfect fit, this class is too stacked to miss.
