I think him having the relationship with social media that he has led to him leaving GS, not joining.

He joined because they were a powerhouse team that was able to offer him a near max deal and he fit in perfectly (as he does almost anywhere). He left because of “bus driver/rider shit and criticism that if he was not as online as he is, wouldn’t have bothered him all that much if at all.

So unless you mean literally he doesn’t have a cell, then Draymond isn’t calling him directly right after having lost the Finals, then four at least.

He wasn’t staying in OKC. He was going to sign with Boston if not with GSW. He has minimum 2 rings with that squad. Two solid perimeter defenders in Bradley and Smart, solid PG play with Rozier, young Jaylen Brown would be a bit of a wildcard in terms of whether his development trajectory would change. Isaiah Thomas probably never has the monster season that year, but maybe that also means he never gets the career wrecking injury either. Moving him to sixth man means their second unit could feast on other teams second string.

They’re beating Cleveland in that conference finals with this squad and that GSW team without KD would need several nuclear games from Steph and Klay to keep up with the Celtics.

Plus, they would still have the #3 pick to add to the roster in KD’s second year on the team, but I doubt the pick would Tatum in that scenario. Maybe Lauri or trade down for extra picks in following years and pick up Jarett Allen. So you’ve got a stretch big in Horford and add athleticism for a second big either as an offensive weapon with Lauri or a defensive stopper and lob threat in Allen. Now you’ve got a core for 3-4 years of KD, Brown, Horford, Markannen/Allen, Smart, Rozier. That’s a tough out.

BTW, in this timeline the Celtics wouldn’t sign Hayward for 2017, so he probably never has the gruesome career wrecking injury. Probably goes to Miami which would have been interesting.

This is one of those fun what if debates that can go a hundred different ways. So much of his career came down to timing, health and roster moves not just social media. It is easy to imagine a different path but championships are never guaranteed. Either way it just shows how thin the margins are between legacy narratives.

Now him leaving GS appeared to be fueled ALOT by the criticism he got. Yes the draymond shit happens. Steph being more loved etc, but I do feel a lot of the criticism he got on social media was just as much of a factor in him running to go join his “best friend” Kyrie in 2019. he should have never left the Warriors

Unpopular opinion but Everything that happened since did more damage to his legacy than actually going to GS. That mess in Brooklyn was a HUGE stain on his legacy.

Atleast if he stayed in GS, it’s up in the air whether or not he could win as the bus driver cause we did see potential of him doing such in OKC. Going to a finals, being 1st team All NBA, second in MVP voting by the time he was 23 with the Thunder. That would be the argument if he stayed on the warriors and people questioned what he could do without them. You could atleast look at what he was already accomplishing in OKC and say he could do it.

But leaving the warriors to go create disasters in Brooklyn and to a lesser extent…..PHX while the warriors won in 2022 and Steph further cementing his legacy just did so much damage
