He’s just a fundamentally decent basketball player*, with an NBA body. He isn’t really great at anything in particular, but he plays his role on both ends of the court, hustles, and makes layups (and sometimes backwards ones!). He can play 10-15 minutes a night without fucking your game up, and he can give hard fouls against other bigs to make scoring at the rim annoying. He’s kind of a perfect 3rd string center, to buffer against injuries, for a team with playoff run expectations. And he’s probably also a decent mentor for young players.

*All of this was true last year. Who knows how effective he’ll be this year?

I think this is actually detrimental for his image. He flashes some crazy passes or pulls off a surprising dribble move, so when he biffs a rotation or gets blown by, he looks even goofier. Compared to another career backup (or at least most of his career), like Robin Lopez, no one expects him to pull off anything impressive, so his lowlights don’t stand out either. He’s legitimately a good passer for a center, he’s just not overall good enough to build a scheme around his passing

(And look, I think all Spurs fans, and sounds like media members as well, all liked him a lot, and are really happy he’s found a role in Toronto. But I doubt he would’ve been able to hold down those kind of minutes for us).

His defence was so horribly bad that he was pretty unplayable for us, especially if we have aspirations of being a contender. We have a lot more trouble in the big/close games we have this year if teams target Mamu as the weak spot in the rotation. Even we are carrying some neutral/bad defenders right now (Keldon, Barnes, Champagnie in particular) - all are a lot better, and much faster at sticking to rotations, than Mamu was.

His offensive skills are great - but we had seen a lot of that last year already. But it didn’t really translate to helping us win.

We still need to find our answer/s at the 4, but I am pretty confident it wasn’t going to be Mamu.

I’ve always been a defender of plums. He hasn’t been worthy of rotation minutes for a bit now, but he’s halfway decent at a lot of things and if he’s a good locker room guy I definitely think he’s a valuable 3rd or 4th big.
