Former Hornet Gordon Hayward has focused on squares since NBA retirement
The craziest part about this is that it’s been two years since he last played
Yeah that bag from Charlotte was his last payday - I legit think he could still be in the league if he wanted to be load-managed coming off the bench for a contender, but why bother? Dude’s got a family and over 200M in career earnings.
I don’t think his heart was in it in the end and he didn’t really have attitude or mindset to be an end of bench vet. He’d made a ton of money, he has a big young family and he had a bunch of injury issues even after the big one in 2017. Not at all a locker room cancer, just a guy who knew he was good at what he did so he’d do that and because he was good at it helped the team. Also he’s turning 36 in a month
Well that and the constant cycle of playing, getting injured and rehabbing injuries really takes it out of you mentally, especially as you’re getting older and realizing you’re more limited in what you used to be able to do.
His last five season in the league he was missing 30-40 games a season and I can’t imagine the toll on his body wasn’t progressively getting worse every year.
Yea I’m not judging him at all, he made generational wealth and walked away early to be more of a dad instead of bumming around an taking roster spots for penny’s compared to his last contracts. Like I mentioned, I don’t think his game really translated well to being a Klay Thompson or Joe Johnson past his prime but still great bench scorer type of player. I think he was a top 200 basketball player in the world when he retired but I also think he would’ve disappointed his team and himself so he got out at a good time
He was unplayable in okc
That last injury he had is what did him in.
Prior to that he was still an all star caliber guy when he played till then
Jesus even his great-grandkids are set for life
He’s got his Youth as well, dude is only 35
There is no place for him in the league, he was completely unplayable when he was on the Thunder 2 whole years ago.
He had that opportunity in his last season at OKC. He was washed and did not play. If he still had juice he would’ve gotten some minutes
Imagine healthy Hayward with the current Hornets squad…
We have healthy Hayward at home. And by home, I mean the Greensboro Swarm.
Man I thought this link was going to go to a pic of PJ Hall, dude can ball
His shot creation and playmaking would be huge for this offense Especially when Lamelo sits
Pretty crazy to me that he had a 14 year career. LeBron really throws things off cause it seems like he came in the league way after Bron and has already been retired for multiple years now
Nobody here is talking about the actual product in the article, it’s actually not a bad idea. With a cube it’s really easy to see when you’re shooting straight on or if your release is adding unnecessary spin to the ball. It’s hard to tell how a sphere is spinning. If anyone has shot a lot before, you know it’s really hard to get good feedback about your shooting form. You can shoot with good form but miss your shots and conversely you can shoot with awful form and still hit. This detaches making the basket from your form and actually seems like a pretty good tool.
Dude we don’t play basketball
We’re talking about basketball? I thought it was Balatro
That Nikola Joker is OP
I thought this was the National balatro association sub smh
smh
i’m just here for the trade deadline drama
Cooked by “play one hand” boss blind once again
Speak for yourself. My YMCA team only misses 20 layups a game.
Where did you thlam it, a car door?
Hahah so true, My wrists are absolute cement from playing hockey. would cause the Cube to short circuit.
Couldn’t you just paint part of the ball and get the same effect?
Seeing spin is easy, you can even see it on NBA broadcasts pretty easily. Aside: a good amount of NBA players have sidespin. A striped ball like in FIBA also makes seeing backspin even easier.
I think the better thing about a cube is it’d keep your guide hand in check because thumb-flick on a cube probably does really weird stuff.
Having said all that, this seems like a gimmick and I have no clue if it’d help anyone. It might help keep the guide hand form good if you’re teaching someone from the ground up.
I can see it helping specifically if you have an issue with too much sidespin. But like you said, a lot of people can make it even to the highest levels of NBA with sidespin or all types of weird shooting quirks so that in that regard it’s not really necessary.
But if someone did specifically just want to shoot with no/less sidespin then this would be great for that
Yes - sort of. Seems like there might be more to it because of how you hold the edge but to get the rotational feedback you could paint it
If you can’t watch a ball rotate, you might need to pick a different sport. This is a gimmick
So you don’t like my idea of a cuboid baseball? So hitters can see the spin?
Let’s be real, that sounds dope
Like you said about adding unnecessary spin Gordon in the video says that you need to shoot with one hand and this forces you to not push it at all with your other hand. You know what why am I even typing this, watch the darn video people. It’s 2 freaking minutes prove to your brain it can watch something longer than 30 seconds.
It’s really not that hard to see the rotation on your shot. Unless you are putting an absurd amount of spin on your shot, you should be able to tell.jusy based on looking at the grooves
Look at the axis of rotation on Steph’s shot and tell me it’s parallel to the rim, cause it ain’t. This tool is a gimmick.
It’s a square basketball that’s developed by a company he bought, supposed to help with feedback on proper shooting form
Thank you. Fucing squares! Why can’t we have a headline that makes sense these days
Nobody gives a shit about the product. We want to talk about how Gordon Hayward is one of the highest paid players in NBA during his tenure in the league and never seemed to get the flack that a lot of other players get for being money focused. He basically went to the highest bidder for most of his career.
He left 2 years ago specifically because teams were on to him and nobody would offer him a giant contract anymore. So faced with having to take prove it deals, he walked away, and the first we hear from him is that he’s trying to secure another bag. An all time jobber.
he came to the celtics to win, he shattered his leg….
The Celtics paid top dollar for him. He followed the money.
He would’ve gotten the max from Utah too.
And the Celtics had his college coach? I’m not sure what this guy is on about. He chased money by……..going to an already good team led by his former coach
please don’t confuse the man with facts
Utah played hardball with him when he was on his rookie deal looking for a max extension. They let forced him to go get an offer elsewhere and then matched it against his will afterward. After that experience he wasn’t going to go back there unless forced to do so.
is he really one of the highest paid ever?
No he’s not. People just compare him to older players when contracts were smaller and say he robbed everyone. Like he made more money than Dirk and Carmelo. Ok cool so do fucking role players now.
He was one of the highest paid players during his tenure in the league.
What players get flak for being money focused? Everybody understands that the league is a business and nobody blames a player for going to the highest bidder. Flipside is that if a player takes a paycut to stay with a team, they end up revered.
You must be new here. Players routinely get flak for not being loyal to their team and being hired guns.
Cube
A cube is just a square but cubed
A square is not a square. I’ll explain later.
Like 3 dimensional and shit?
Roughly.
Parallelogram
HAULING CUUUUUBE!!
They are pretty cool. Four sides? All the same length and shit…
With beveled edges? Shiiiiiiii
David Wallace invents the Suck It
Daddy’s always happy.
It’s called the FORM,” Hayward explains. “It’s a FORM basketball. It stands for Focused on Repetitive Motion. You are grooving that jump shot.” “We’ve got nothing but good feedback from everybody,” he says. “It’s in 20 NBA teams now. Bunch of colleges are using it (too).” Hayward didn’t invent the product but felt strongly enough about its effectiveness that he partnered up with a friend and bought its parent company.

Lmao I thought the whole thing was figurative until that bit
Good for Gordon man, a lot of players really don’t know what to do after.
He was so ass with OKC, I can see why they’re going with ”former hornet”.
what’s his job? tables?
DONT ASK ABOUT THE TABLES!
Can’t wait for the triangle one next
Before you know it they’ll be a whole offense schemed around it.
That’s for Ricky when he needs to cut a square
Oh, you have a four-sided shooting gizmo? Well check out my THREE sided shooting gizmo!
I just remember his short stint with OKC and honestly he didn’t look great. Didn’t have a role for him.
Edit: other than when he played for Butler and the Celtics.
he was fire on the jazz
I think being buried on the end of OKCs bench got to him. His age did not align with the goal for the roster/team at all and it’s unfortunate.
I think he had 1-2 years of positive impact play in him but I also salute him deciding to hang them up rather than fade into obscurity on the end of a bench to collect a paycheque.
Oof. Even he’s not buying the pitch as he’s selling it.
Oh man I forgot about this guy and his horrible sideways foot injury… Glad he’s doing ok
Will always be one of my favorite players. Wish he stuck around on a smaller deal one more year and be part of the 2025 championship
Wasn’t his brief Thunder stint kinda not good? I remember seeing stuff about him unhappy there, or maybe it was just about playing time.
I think he was a bit washed at that point sadly. I thought he would be a difference maker when he went there lol
I looked up some articles from the time, he felt like he wasn’t given a lot of run in OKC despite a 44 minute stretch of playtime without scoring
I remember him being awful
Y u downvote me for my (correct) memory :(
Fairly sure he scored zero points in the 2 playoff series he played with us that year and was literally not taking wide open shots.
Then he shit on the team afterwards and Presti later said it was a bad decision on his part bringing him in. So yeah fuck that guy.
I still feel so robbed as a celtics fan. Throughout our entire history Hayward is very likely our biggest free agent signing ever and it all crumbled so fast. Would’ve really loved to see what Irving-Brown-Hayward-Tatum-Horford could’ve done
Imagine how us Jazz fans feel. Prime Hayward with Prime Rudy and rookie deal Donovan could have been a pretty legit squad.
I mean regardless of Haywatds unfortunate injuries his time with the jazz came to an end but yeah I get what you mean
That reporter was really rocking that outfit gd
Dude was like, oh we’re doing a piece on a basketball player? In a gym? I’m coming ready to HOOP!
Full-kit wanker
Damn, just shitting on Charlotte. He didn’t say he hasn’t watched the NBA, just not the Hornets.
Does it work?
I wouldn’t buy it that’s for sure.
“Former Jazz, Former Celtic, Former Hornet, Former Thunder…”
He broke early in the season Gordon Hayward
I hesitate to call this a ‘gimmick’ but I would call it unnecessary. Although I’m about to put up a hoop in my living room and this might be a good addition for that so the ball doesn’t bounce everywhere
I’ll never forget D-Will chewing him out at a Jazz game
Practice shooting bricks.
I routinely think of him ALMOST hitting that shot for Butler
I’m skeptical of most sports equipment gimmicks but my gut thinks this makes sense.
Best way to help squares is to teach them ball. Doing the lords work

A square ball
The white mamba!
Don’t you dare disrespect Brian Scalabrine like that.
I’m talking about looks.
Does it work? Maybe. Am I willing to pay $70 for it? Hell no!
Does he have CTE or what? Obviously a money grab so he can cash out after an appearance on Shark Tank. Why the hell would you want to get used to shooting a cube? Just make a ball with hand placements, sensors, may be LEDs. Oh too expensive huh?
