A ton of posts trying to whip up anti-tanking fervor that look suspiciously like AI slop started hitting this sub all the sudden… I assumed it was just groupthink, but it makes sense that there are actually gambling interests behind some or many of them trying to get fans to pressure the league

The amount of anti Adam Silver posts that have popped up seemingly overnight of all these fed up people who hate Adam Silver and think there needs to be a campaign to drive him out of the league has completely felt like an astroturfed campaign to me because who tf cares. 

Why all of a sudden and seemingly at random has there been a dozen posts on this subreddit every single day talking about how Adam silver needs to be fired. I’ve never heard anybody in real life who cares or has such a strong negative opinion about him

So much of Reddit is influenced by paid marketing dollars. Whenever you start seeing a topic overdiscussed in a sub and/or discussed in many subs that barely even fit the topic, there’s an extremely high chance you are being manipulated.

I just fail to see how the league can legislate/enforce how much/when players play in-game, specifically. From a rules perspective, how does the league differentiate between benching a player to tank, vs benching a player who’s having an off night, vs benching a player to go with a different look or lineup. Outside of “I know it when I see it”, I don’t see a way the league could make rules on this without taking away coaches’ ability to coach.

Tanking will always be a part of the league when the draft pick order is done so that worse teams can catch up theoretically.

The issue isn’t the goal, it’s that the league only listens when the house loses.

Gambling companies are also the ones paying for sponsorship and providing betting odds.

Can’t the gambling company just refuse action on the teams tanking due to not being able to set a line on players on that team? Do they have to offer all bets on every possible thing? I get they lose that action, but seems easier than going at the NBA.

I see no reason why books can’t set lines with tanking strategies baked in.

Just a reminder that David Stern was staunchly against allowing the NBA to get in bed with gambling for his entire tenure as NBA commissioner. It was one of the positive things I can say about Stern. Silver took over and let gambling take over after only a few years. NBA owner have wanted gambling for years because of the revenue it can bring in. Stern told them to fuck off year after year because it wasn’t ever happening. Silver caved like a bitch almost immediately. The worst thing is that the NBA owners don’t care about how it ruins the sport because they’re making shitloads of cash from it, and they likely think Silver is doing a great job because that’s all they really care about.

100% true , people just don’t understand that, the more fair the sport is the more money betting companies earn. They have a fixed rake and volume of the bets and money paid is the only limit to what they earn. The gambling company needs the games to go fair because they move the lines and odds based on the money paid so they are always up, but only if there is trust and people pay money on the bets.

It’s the same as a Casino. You need only people to put money on the table and the profit is guaranteed because of the mathematics. Casino never wants to cheat because they don’t need to because their rake is again fixed depending on the game and they only need enough bankroll to pay of if someone gets very lucky, but at the same time more people will loose so the only thing Betting companies fear is being out of money!
