I mean he’s back. I won’t argue. His mom is white though. That makes him biracial. It’s just in the usa that basically means black.
It’s an interesting topic. My own kids are biracial (white/Asian), so it’s something I’ve thought about from time-to-time. For them, at least, it seems to be pretty fluid. There are times I’ve overheard them say, “I’m white,” and other times say, “I’m Asian.”
Obviously, there is a lot of history around blackness in this country, to put it mildly, and it’s also usually not as easy for biracial black people to “pass” as white as it may be for other racial combinations (like white/Asian).
But where I land on it is to go by how the person themself chooses to identify. If Obama says he’s a black man, then that’s what I’ll call him.
A bit of trivia for you… Walter Brown and Chuck Cooper are credited with integrating of the NBA, as they were the first “fully” black players to join the League back in the 1951 season. But arguably the first “black” player was Leroy Chollet, who played two years for the Syracuse Nationals starting in 1949. Now, Leroy was only 1/8th black and definitely passed as white, so you may roll your eyes at anyone saying he “broke the color barrier” in the NBA, but consider this - Leroy grew up in New Orleans and played his freshman year at Loyola New Orleans, where he was the team’s star, leading them to the NAIA championship that year.
However, a local did some genealogical digging and discovered that Leroy’s great-grandmother had been a (Black) slave. Therefore, Leroy was (by Louisiana law) a “negro” and couldn’t play for the white school. He was expelled, his older brother - a football star - was kicked out of Tulane, and his family was run out of town. Leroy and his brother transferred to a college in Buffalo, NY.

It was calling and convincing all the moderate Dems to drop out of the 2020 primary early to coalesce around Biden, a candidate that they were beating handily, with the sole intention of making sure Bernie didn’t win.
