Wemby would’ve been the all-star MVP if it was the East vs. West format. Now that I’m thinking about it, the West had all of the MVP candidates in this game (Wemby, Ant, Kawhi).
The question is tho, would it be as competitive? Would it be our normal guy brings ball up and shoots near half court every time? He balled out, but it’s different than when guys didn’t try that hard.

I’m thinking the NBA only did this format because of the Olympics being hosted by NBC, which of course, broadcasted the All-Star game. I don’t think we will see this format again. But, it was a great game finally
I think it’s really because the ASG just became this thing where no one plays defense, and everyone just hoists half court shots all game. They did it to try and make guys compete.
And it worked, to some extent. East vs west doesn’t rlly make sense because players/teams generally develop rivals within the same conference, less so across conferences. This 3 teams thing works fine because it lets the players identify with something bigger than just which conference they’re in.
They did this exact same format last year (even breaking the teams up into young, old and team world without naming them such because it wasn’t a clean separation) except they had the rising stars winner play on Sunday instead of doing the round robin.
I think they’ll stick to this for the next few years, the biggest complaint with the true tourney format last year was that it was too little basketball being played (we only got 3 games and they were all to 40 which was too low), doing a round robin with 3 teams and then a final between the top two teams is four quarters and is what you’d get with a traditional ASG format.
That’s part of it, but also this is the first time there is enough non-American talent to have it be a good matchup. Wemby and SGA’s ascension has made the world team a worthy opponent
