People often point out too many styles, but it’s been like that forever and are taught distinctly even to kids and beginners.
The real inflation problem in swimming is relays. We’re seeing more relay swimmers come away with huge medal hauls despite only being good at a single event. It’s definitely not looked at the same as people who get the same hauls in individual events.
Conversely, it is also a lot easier to maintain dominance in wrestling compared to a single swimming event because wrestlers age better. You don’t see many Olympic level swimmers above 30 (median is like 22), whereas the median age of an Olympic wrestler is like 28. Phelps’ first Olympics was when he was 15, and he only competed in 5 Olympics, the most of any swimmer ever. He also won a gold in either the 100m or 200m butterfly in 4 of them.

For sure, you’re right about the total medal count. I’m saying that even if we were going by dominance within sport, Phelps would be similar. Like even if we were to condense the entire sport of swimming into a single “MVP of swimming” for each Olympics, Phelps would probably win in 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 despite it being harder to stay that dominant in swimming.
speaking from experience, swimmers could train for longer but the grind to stay at the top is so exhausting that most people retire early. Staring at a black line for 25-30 hours a week gets to you.
Eh I swam a lot in high school too, made CA states and I mean, the people who love it, really love it, but there does seem like a competitive cliff past like 25 for most, and especially after 30 for nearly everyone.
Pretty sure the oldest person to achieve a world record in an individual Olympic swimming event was Sarah Sjostrom in the 50 free at 2023 worlds when she was 29, for example. Oldest male to achieve one was Alexander Popov at 28 in 2000 also in the 50 free. Similarly, the oldest Olympic gold medalist was Anthony Earvin in the 50 free at 35.
Notably, this is all in the 50 free which is more about burst speed and is a super high variance event in general.
If it were really inflated you’d see other swimmers also have crazy medal counts, but there is only one who stands head and shoulders above the rest.

His combination of pinpoint accuracy, form, release speed, core strength, and being a pioneer who inspired pretty much every aspring basketball star to extend their shooting range 3-5 feet further back, whether they were a 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5, can’t be surpassed. He also legitimately revealed a viable path to “‘breaking” the game of basketball itself, in my opinion, by having an effective shooting range of “Anywhere past the half court line.”
Think about it - outside of fast break transitions, the game of basketball is, essentially, a half-court game. Pickup games with only one hoop even seamlessly use a half-court format. So, what do you do when you have a guy who can shoot with the most minimal of spacing and timing, from any position in half-court, whether on balance or off balanced, left, right, forwards, or backwards? It breaks the game.
This is why he is the only player who gets consistently picked up at full court and gets surprise blitz

Luka doesn’t bring the ball up court much. He tries to conserve lot of his energy as much as he can. He likes getting the ball afterwards when the ball has crossed half court. They’re not pressing him at full court and if they do press him at all during the game, it’s to tire him out because Luka will get tired. They’re not pressing Curry to tire him out, it’s to get the ball out of his hand and have some dude chase and grab him all night. Mike Brown, Nick Nurse and Udoka coached teams love surprise blitzing Curry at full court. Even Kobe Bryant said he’s unique and you have to guard him this way.
Yeah, I think Curry’s record falls within 10-15 years of him retiring just based on how much 3 point shooting has changed. A guy like Kon could break it and never be in the same sentence as Steph. It’s just the math. Curry came into the league late, had injuries and missed games, and started slow compared to his 2015+ pace.
