People have a lot of revisionist history about all-star weekend. There were times in the ‘90s where the game was played like an absolute joke and there were games in the 2000s where the dunk contest was even worse than today. People act like this is a new thing. This has been a debate for 30 years, social media just amplifies it.

I just don’t watch it - doesn’t affect me if others do or don’t 🤷‍♂️

Move the NBA cup at this time to play the game. All the other stars selected have to do either the 3 point, dunk, or shooting. It accumulates the points so that there is a team winner.

While all star weekend has gotten worse I’m starting to think most people here just have way too high of expectations for it.

All I expect from this weekend every year is seeing some fun moments and the players being relaxed and goofy with each other, and I don’t come out of it too disappointed any year.

The NBA needs to stop needlessly tinkering with All Star weekend for no reason. Yeah, the last few years have been shit. A part of that is that the current crop of players don’t take it serious. Another part of it is that they keep on changing things and they have turned the entire thing into a gaudy celebrity and influencer show which is totally inauthentic to the sport.

They should just return to the old All Star format, stay authentic, and let the show continue. Who knows, in a few years, maybe there will be more players like Wemby who value it as a tradition and a spectacle, and make the game better.

It’s simple, merge the NFL Pro Bowl and the NBA All Star game into one weekend where players from both sports compete in skills challenges. I want to see Jokic try a field goal or a Josh Allen dribble challenge.

Dunk contest needs a rework to make it less about creativity and more about competition. Turn it into some kind of dunking game and make it more accessible to big stars.

I just want to now that the problems with all start weekend aren’t exclusive to the NBA. The NFL probowl is far worse. They can’t even find players willing to go. I wish North leagues cancelled them and let players rest

Why not shut down the league for 2 weeks and do a mid season march madness style tournament? And call it the nba cup, cancelling the thing they currently call the nba cup as well.

It comes down to players wanting to compete. I have a theory that the lack of competitiveness comes from all these players that are sort of bred to be NBA players and have been pushed through AAU and such since they were kids. They never played in the streets, at the park, etc. There’s a lack of competitiveness. It’s a job, not a love.

I think the foul complaints on every play point to this the most. In the streets, there’s no one to ask for a foul. You can call it yourself, of course, but depending on the contact, you’re gonna lose a lot of respect from other players calling things like a wrist slap on a layup. In Chicago, you get put on your ass. You don’t complain, you just get up and try to finish through the contact next time. And maybe put them on their ass on the other end.

TLDR: Too many rich kids in the NBA.

The celebrities would care - this is a marquee party weekend for them to rub elbows with their sports heroes.

The general public would not give a shit if All Star weekend was canceled totally.

They basically already did by changing the time! I would have completely misssed it if I hadn’t gotten bored around 6:45 and somehow caught half of Ludacris and the dunk contest.

Fix the dunk contest: Direct the dunks that must be completed. Round 1 windmill. Round 2 through the legs. Round 3 foul line takeoff. something like that.

Fix the 3 point contest: round 1 free throws, best of 20. Round 2 3 point line. Round 3 from the logo.

My wife and I usually unwind on the Saturday night watching the three point and dunk contests. We were at dinner and planning to do so yesterday and were surprised it was over with. Had no clue it was in the afternoon yesterday.

One article on the ESPN app even said everything was on at 8pm in NBC lol.

The reason why people don’t attend the Allstar game is because they are priced out.

The players clearly don’t want to be there. Cut it out give them the week off continue league play the week after.

Change it to 3 on 3 tournaments and 1 on 1 tournaments

• delay the whole nba cup final four to this weekend
• day 1: play nba semifinal games
• day 2: start the day by brining all stars to the court one by one
• thank them and send them away
• play the nba cup final
• half time: 3pt contest

It makes way too much money for the league and the cities hosting it it to discontinue. NFL and nhl all star games aren’t good either. MLB matters because league winner gets home field advantage in the World Series.

We need a 4 nations Cup like the NHL. There are too many good international teams now, and the biggest gripe with the US is they do not play any meaningful games until the World Cup/Olympics.

Get France, Canada, and Serbia (enough great players and EuroLeague pros) Play a 4 team tournament and have Sunday be the regular East v West showcase. I mean you can even extend it to Germany and Australia for example and make one big group and the top 4 play a tourney for the title. Have it a week during the All-Star Break all in that city (no travel needed).

One of the best parts of the NBA is how much respect a lot of players have for guys on other teams

3pt shootout is still always fun to watch. It should be the main event. I think if they can think of a new event to replace th dunk contest it would be fine. 

I feel that way about every All-star game in every sport.

I don’t think any sports league should have an all star game or weekend. It’s not competitive and it’s not great entertainment. I’ve never even watched a pro bowl in my lifetime. Let alone an NBA all star game.

Imo, the all star weekend should be replaced with a week of daily mini “docu series” that deep dive into all star players Basketball history.

There’s probably money reasons this will never go away, but I kinda think this time of year would be a lot more exciting if you had the IST semifinals and finals and then just like a week off for the trade deadline/for players to have a break before the second half of the year.

I disagree, I think following the NFL’s ~4 months of domination by taking a week off and wasting everyone’s time while not capitalizing on the opportunity to seize the enormous surge in demand for meaningful competition is a genius marketing decision. No I’m not Roger Goodell, why?

My idea: have a game between next year’s draft class and a team made up of the last three No. 1 draft picks. The side events would feature the best NBA players voted by the fans competing in the following contests: Slam Dunk Contest, 1v1, and 3-Point Contest.

All of these events in a single day.

It’s not for grown adults. My 11 year old loves this and watches it all.

I think the players will miss it. Unless those days are turned into rest days.

Only thing that can save it is make it a competition against gleaguers, it will at least mean half the participants will be motivated.

It’s really sad because back in the day, NBA All Star Weekend was a huge deal. Not only for basketball, but it was one of the main social events for the entire year that people looked forward too and booked vacations around.

Maybe include fans and do Fans vs NBA players. Bring in pro dunkers for the slam dunk.

Last night I was dicking around on the AM radio and a station was coming in on every 10Khz click of the tuning dial… even the ones with static became clear if I reoriented my car 90 degrees.

I managed to find the home of the Knicks and I was losing my mind that I was gonna be able to hear a local broadcast but then I tuned to it and its the god damned allstar break.

I did manage to find Lacrosse games and Minor League Hockey games so it wasn’t a total loss but I’d have preferred a sport where I can put faces to the names.

Watch Unrivaled instead. The 1v1 tournament was much better basketball.

I think they need to make it more affordable, and more family/kids oriented. Like… regular adults are probably already checked out, but if they made it more family friendly esp if there are opportunities to interact with the players it could be really cool. Maybe have like disney or something host at at home version. it feels like it used to be much more about families and not just like really wealthy people.

It’s been bad for years. They just need to make a better product.

I say offer Millions of dollars to whoever wins certain contests and millions to the team who wins the all-star game. I feel like the in season tournament would be better too if they did that. $500k to win the in season tournament is scraps and incentives no one.
