I don’t think this is bad advice, but I think this is the most widely misinterpreted advice to tragic consequences for society
It invites no self reflection ever.
People just don’t follow loving yourself to its natural conclusion. You need to be able to respect yourself too which you’ll never be able to do if you don’t work at being a good person
Self love and self reflection are not mutually exclusive at all. You can recognize parts of yourself you want to change without coming to the conclusion that you’re a piece of shit or flawed in some way. That route I can GUARANTEE you will not help bring the sustainable long-term change you’re hoping for.
Yeah they miss that a part of loving yourself is working on yourself.
It’s like the old guilt vs shame idea. I did bad vs I AM bad. If I believe I AM bad when I do bad things, I’m much more likely to eventually just say screw it, this is who I am and keep doing the harmful thing. If I believe I did a bad thing, but I’m not broken, I’m much more likely to actually grow and do better.
I’m not trying to preach or act like an authority on this but this has been my experience in mental health recovery over the last 7 years

Yeah but the idea is to not shame yourself about it and instead think like “i suck right now, but the fact it bothers me shows that this thing doesn’t define me. I know im awesome and if I work on this, I’ll be able to change this thing.”
Loving someone/something doesn’t mean assuming they perfect and should not change. A good parent loves their children unconditionally and because of that does everything in their power to try to make their children become the best person they can, with the best set of tools for dealing with life possible, and tries to give them as many opportunities as they need and trusting them while also making them accountable but never maligning them for their mistakes.
And that’s why I think it gets misinterpreted that much. Loving yourself doesn’t mean assuming that you are perfect and that everything you do is above question. And it doesn’t matter “prioritizing my wants no matter the cost” (another popular misinterpretation, the one that I think is more harmful).
I think it’s more about wanting to be the best version of yourself and not letting your mistakes/bad qualities define you (and that doesn’t mean being blind to them), working on your self value without using that to escape self reflection…
