To be fair… getting traded to a championship favorite with a legit back court need is a tremendous blessing. I would probably wake up smiling every morning.
I’m sure he’s ecstatic, but I think it’d also be human to hold a grudge on some level after being traded for scraps when you’re so fresh in the league and showed promise.
Any player is gonna see a trade as an assessment of his value, and he can’t be thrilled about that assessment. Plus I’m sure it’s always personal because any player is gonna think any team should want them. It’s not bitterness about the specific destination.
Mccain got traded for a first round pick. Not really scraps. I kind of understand why he was traded. Not enough minutes when the two guys you play behind play 35+ minutes a game and Grimes plays 25-30. Morey is probably wanting to draft a big in the draft to shore up the front court depth on a cost controlled contract. I don’t see a way McCain could generate more value on the Sixers with the limited minutes he was getting
Scraps may not be accurate, but he was the 16th pick a year ago and getting ROTY buzz pre-injury. I would assess a pick in the late 20s and a few second rounders as a loss of value for a guy producing like a top 10 pick.
I’m not saying I don’t get the trade (though I would be nervous if I’m Philly based on what looks to be his potential). I’m just saying that if I was him, I’d feel like I was traded for less than my value. Every player probably thinks that, and that mentality probably helps them be in the top few hundred ball players, but I think he has an argument lol
He was a non lotto pick in a really crappy draft, played 1 great month of basketball on a horrible team and got hurt. He came back from injury automatically buried behind better talents and played horribly both at the NBA level and the GLeague.
A late first and some seconds is a pretty good return given the facts.
I think the poise and efficiency he maintained across what is (imo) a significant sample size in 23 games (especially the first 23 of a career) would be hard to fluke into. There looks to be something there. As you said, he’s coming off of injury, and being a fresh player in the league and not getting steady minutes are factors here imo. He’d been trending upwards in Philly’s more recent games where he got actual burn.
I’d take him top 15 in the upcoming draft based on what we’ve seen. It’s possible Morey really sold high on him, but to me it felt very early to cut line on a guy who had everyone convinced he was legit and had valid reasons for not maintaining that production to this point this year. I don’t think it was lopsided value; I just think he probably feels like he was traded for less than he’s worth and I believe there’s a case. We’ll see. Presti has a decent track record.
