[Highlight] Doc Rivers on Cam Thomas:
“I’ve had Jamal Crawford. I had Lou Williams… And now, I have Cam Thomas.”
Doc Rivers next week: “Cam Thomas is the best player I’ve ever coached”
Doc Rivers after the Bucks get eliminated in the 1st round: “Cam Thomas, listen to me when I say this: you… are trash.”
You just can’t win coaching guys like that, no matter how great of a coach you are, and I should know because I’m great, and they suck, it’s the players’ fault we lost.
Doc Rivers - “ I deserve to be fired because I left you out there for 38 minutes. You wasn’t doin shit”
Dude shit on his star player who actually ended up staying because said star player wanted to make money off of sports gambling.
That said, I hope Cam Thomas thrives. TBH, he’s somewhat of a Dame type so not much changes if the PnR Cam and Giannis game works.
who actually ended up staying because said star player wanted to make money off of sports gambling.
He quite literally could’ve gotten traded and bet on that instead if you’re convinced he had financial gain from it lol. what logic is this
Cam Thomas, “He had Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, James Harden, Kawhi Leonard, and now, Cam Thomas.”
You don’t turn down 2-year $30 million if you compare yourself to Jamaal Crawford or Lou Will
He never had Iguoadala tho :(
Universe on the line!
DEATH BEAM POINTED AT THE EARTH
#I WANT IGUODALA!!
He also had Tracy McGrady, Kevin Garnett, Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan, Paul George, Joel Embiid, Giannis, and Dame
Doc later continued: “I’ve had Paul Pierce. I had Paul George… And now, I have Ousmane Dieng.”
I don’t like Doc or think he’s a good coach, but that’s heavy praise for Cam and probably great for his confidence
Also trying to define his role immediately which is good
I mean the Nets defined his role he just didn’t accept it.. Hopefully not getting the deal he wanted, finding out nobody wanted to trade anything of value for him and then getting waived is the wakeup call he needs.
If he truly does accept the sparkplug role he has a place in the league and is a good get for the Bucks or wherever he ultimately ends up.
He’ll have a place in the league, he just won’t be making as much as he wants doing that.
The problem is that Lou and Jamal also were capable of playing playmaker even if their defense was average or below and were willing to sacrifice their play style for the team. Cam hasn’t done that and doesn’t seem willing so far.
Also, a TON of Nets fans felt the same about Cam: a fantastic 6th man who has the green light when starters are on the bench especially on a contending team. The Cam stans think he’s Kobe 2.0 though.
Were Lou and Jamal doing that at 24 years old though? Honest question, I don’t remember their early careers.
Omg, Cam Thomas has been in the league 5 years now, so maybe he won’t change/evolve that much.
Comparing them when they got into the league or their younger selves? Without looking at stats, Jamal was still a better playmaker with Chicago. Lou took more time to adjust, but he adjusted around year 4⁄5. Looking at actual stats? Seems to confirm it.
Cam has a ton of time to grow. No one says he’s a bum. The problem with the Nets was his unwillingness to adapt or grow. Every Nets fan knew his scoring was fantastic. The problem is just he needs 20 seconds to do it and at the expense of a rebuilding team in an offense that valued ball movement. There were tons of plays where they’d double him and he’d still try to dribble his way to get an open shot and ignore players. Anyone can say “well, he was a Net. He had no one to pass it to.” I’d rather a 30% 3PT player try and make a wide open shot than watch Cam try to weave through 2 players that took 10 seconds. And he’s a cone on defense. 80% due to his size.
I think the playmaking applies to Lou (+Trez PnR), don’t agree on Clippers Jamal who was fully looking to gun in the same way. Like when he was younger and fashioned himself as more of a lead guard he passed more, but once he was in that sixth man role it was a lot like Cam.
I agree with you completely. The problem is that Jamal on the Clippers was already headed out of his prime for the most part. Everyone knew what he was capable of, but was just told to fit a specific role, which was a spark plug. Cam, the way he plays right now, is the perfect spark plug. Same with Lou. They were older than where Cam is now.
The problem is that he absolutely had the potential to be more, but he just refused to let his game grow because he only cared about buckets. The one trick he has is really good, but when you’re so bad on defense and hate passing, that one trick pony becomes useless no matter how good the trick is.
Cam doesn’t need any help with confidence. He’s probably offended that Doc didn’t comp him to Ray Allen or Harden.
Tbh Cam probably thinks of those comparisons as insults
Funny enough he didn’t seem that happy when a reporter told him Doc said that.
He talked about how he’s more than just a scorer.
hes good at things like this. I remember when he was traded to the clippers, one of the pieces was for Deandre Jordan for KG. When it fell apart doc said something along the lines of im glad we kept deandre, hes going to be a huge part of this team. and his numbers jumped as a result leading him to an all star. so pretty cool even though hes deadass wrong lmao
Not just that, but he told Deandre to be the defensive anchor, and to not to worry about offense. He gave Deandre a clearly defined role, and it paid off.
Is it? 2 players who couldn’t play defense and sucked in the playoffs? Congrats on 6MOTY aka the inefficient volume scoring bench player off the year.
NBA players absolutely love Jamal Crawford and Lou Williams
Same way most of them overrate “having a bag”. If you watch past or current players talk about those guys, it’s almost always super positive
Cam Thomas: I was a Net, and now I am a Buck.
Lou and Crawford were better handlers and passers.
Doc likes it when the bench comes on and there’s a gunner because then he can put the clipboard away and take a break from this calling plays nonsense.
Throat guy disappointed he didn’t get a mention.
Why did the Nets release him tho
No one wanted to trade value for him and he wasn’t working in their system. Being an off the bench scorer is probably the best role for him
Nobody is paying for 6-man scoring guards in today’s NBA though. I’m really interested what him and Anfernee Simons get in the offseason.
Shaedon Sharpe got a bag, but that is quickly looking like a bad contract.
PP?
if that’s pritchard, he’s a starter.
I think they’re asking for a dick pic.
PP was a starter next to Derrick White at the beginning of the season.
Honestly I wonder if we’re going to see a trend moving forward for 6MOY - it’ll be less about scoring guards that inflate numbers and more of, “oh man this person could legit be a starter elsewhere.” Naz Reid comes to mind too.
Id argue that the 6th man role is best for players with a flaw that gets covered by playing against bemch units or simply less minutes. For example Naz Reid isnt a great defender so hes perfect for that, same for the microwave scorers or players like Jaime Jaquez Jr. on the heat. Basically players that might need a system built around them to work that arent good enough to be the first option on a contender. Giddey comes to mind.
Not even the beginning, he’s started in 48⁄53 games this season.
I always looked at him like a Jamal Crawford type player. Issue is he needs to reign in his ego and accept that 6th man role. It’s not a lack of talent issue, it’s a fit issue. He could be one of the best 6th men in the league if he accepts that role
We had no interest in him being part of our future. It’s baffling how many outside fans know so little about Cam Thomas, and only see “BUT HE CAN DROP 40”.
Not saying it’s you, just talking in general
Yea it’s kinda crazy seeing this sub and Bucks fans get sucked into the Cam thing after 1 game, like he didn’t have a bunch of heater games for the Nets,
Stats aren’t the end game for fans in the nba. Its dubs and how many your team can get or not get.
this is only his second game for Milwaukee. give it a few more and you’ll see exactly why lol
In today’s CBA it just makes a lot more sense to cut players if they don’t have any trade value. Same thing happened with Sochan on the Spurs.
He’s not that good.
I know that it’s Doc, but are those terrible comps? That’s probably the value that CT can bring to a decent team, even though it’s debatable wheater or not there’s value in that.
As far as a great role for him? Don’t think so. He’s not as good a playmaker as Lou Will but he could dominate that 6th man role if he accepts it
Lou Will won his first 6MOTY with 2.1 APG and had a 2.9 APG career avg until he was 30 and joined the Clippers. Don’t get me wrong, CT is as much of a ballhog and bad playmaker as it gets, but maybe a different team that allows him to do his thing will make him less selfish. Still, CT’s AST% still is very similar to pre-Clippers Lou and career-wise Jamal.
He’s had the opportunity to be more than a scorer and it’s been encouraged of him more than it was of Lou Will by this point. He’s still young enough to eventually get there but he’s had a lot of say in his assist numbers being what they are
He did kind of improved his assist numbers/rate from year 1 to 4, right? I think a scaled down version of CT year 4 is a perfectly fine comp for a 6th man type, even though I don’t think those guys bring much value in today’s league. His first 3 years with sub 15% ast% and the way he was treated like the Nets version of Kuminga this season makes him no service when we compare him to guys that had their prime in their 30s.
This was a completely reasonable way to answer the question he was asked. But it’s Reddit so people will read the headline and make lazy comments for karma because Doc Rivers = bad
U fucked up lou wills pay check
He has him hostage
Doc’s dream lineup: Crawford/LouWill/Cam/Poole/Clarkson
AND YOU COULDN’T WIN SHIT WITH THEM!
DeAndre Jordan IS Bill Russel
Putting them in the same sentence is insane lol
Both Jamal and Lou received sixth man of the year 3x each. Let’s see if Cam can even get one.
What’s crazy, is that as much of a really great compliment to Cam Thomas as this is ….
… Cam Thomas probably internally finds this insulting. He is certain he is a number one option being held back.
How is this man still an NBA coach
The Cam Thomas edits going to go crazyy
Until he throws him under the bus after some loss.
