I’m not 100% for the NBA, but in football (soccer), the old club stops paying you if you sign a new contract with someone (they can also probably prevent you from signing with someone else, as you’re still under contract, just not the coach/manager anymore). So yeah, most likely only the Pistons have to pay him.

For players, because their contracts are subject to the CBA, offset language is a negotiated point and is included by default in all NBA contracts. Monty Williams the person seems like a solid dude. I hold no ill will towards him as a person, he simply literally got an offer he couldn’t refuse. I’m pro people just rug pulling billionaires and will always be pro employee over corps.

From a basketball perspective I just wish he didn’t sign. Getting someone who half asses it bc they’re not invested (for entirely understandable reasons) was just a really shit product for fans.

Also IIRC he declined Detroit initially. It wasn’t until they gave him an offer that was too good to pass up that he took the job.

It was heavily talked about when he signed with Detroit that he didn’t really want the job but they kinda gave him an offer he couldn’t refuse. Having health insurance provided when your wife is sick seems like a pretty good incentive along with a nice bag.

He should not have accepted the contract with Detroit in this case, no matter what. He makes more money in a year than 99% of americans will make in their lifetimes. Take a couple years off and support your wife and family, or fully commit to the job and be all-in. I personally know people who have dealt with similar levels of loss/health issues, while making $60k/yr. Saying “Oh but Monty couldn’t have turned down the money Detroit was offering” is just ridiculous. He already had more money than any one human could sustainably spend in a lifetime. I wish him and his family the best, and he’s always seemed like a great guy, but he made a very selfish decision.

Hayes makes a good son in law to be fair.

Apparently, everyone in the organization from the trainers and analytics team told him to play Ivey over Hayes. To give context, Hayes is one of the worst players from an advanced stats pov. Ivey is not good either, but you gotta give reps to see how he develops and he has better offensive rapm than hayes.

I recall he rejected the contract a couple times but the number got too large to decline. So he clearly didn’t want to be there but did it for the money.

I think theres a lesson for us all. Don’t pay someone who doesn’t want to come.
