Both tanking and load management get at the divide between the NBA as an entertainment business and the NBA as a athletic competition.

In a macro sense the Jazz are pursuing the strategy that gives them the best chance of a championship. They recognized they weren’t good enough to compete this season so they are trying to secure the best possible draft pick. They struggle to attract big name free agents, their only real shot is hitting on an early draft pick. If your goal as a franchise is to win as many championships as possible this is a perfectly reasonable and rational strategy.

But the NBA is also an entertainment media company. Having teams that spend an entire season not trying to win hurts the entertainment product. From an entertainment standpoint, the league would prefer every team treat every game like a do or die game 7.

These two different motivations are always in conflict but in recent years its come to a head as all media companies are struggling to capture viewers.

I actually think the league has taken the right approach by flattening the odds so much that you don’t need to race to the bottom to get the best picks.

I think it’s in the leagues best interest not to give a decent pick to OKC this year, so this tank is quite ethical .

Also, we’re not going to be able to compete for anything this year. Our priorities have to be keeping our starters healthy for next year, and getting our young guys as many real minutes against other teams stars without our stars to bail them out. After this season it’s back to winning basketball. Growth mindset at the moment. We’re doing the best thing for our team, and it has nothing to do with winning today.

They made a trade for another All-Star and since then, they’ve been sitting their starters for the entire 4th quarter because they’re doing too well. I can’t recall such egregious tanking ever. The whole idea of tanking would look totally different if they locked the two worst records into the 3rd/4th picks. The 3rd worst record would have the best shot at #1 with 20% odds, but the two worst records wouldn’t have any chance.

All of a sudden you’d have a pack of lottery teams trying to win just enough games throughout the season. The tank would still happen at a meta level (lack of spending/trades for the future) but it wouldn’t be a race to the bottom.

This isn’t even that bad a deal for the worst two teams. Last year it would’ve moved the Jazz/Wizards from ⁵⁄₆ to ³⁄₄.

haven’t watched NBA in a while but seems like it’s turning into that south park episode where they were playing baseball and they wanted to lose but the other teams wanted to lose too so they had to train to get better at losing.

Silver needs to step up and do something fast. It’s been bad for a couple of years now but this is getting ridiculous.

I seriously don’t understand their game plan. They have good players on their team and usually start off the season on pace to compete for the play-in. Then suddenly during ASB they try to tank shamelessly. Why not just trade Lauri and let the young players develop from the start of the season? Get a couple vets on minimum contracts and call it a day.
