Few days ago Rudy called out the effort of some players on defensive end and them not being held accountable by the coaches.
Chris Finch found those comments disappointing.
I don’t think he found the content of the comments disappointing, his problem was that Gobert took it to the media instead of airing it out internally
I guarantee he did internally and it’s made fuck all difference. Man’s desperate to change the culture.
100% Rudy is known for holding players accountable in the locker room. The common pattern I’ve noticed is that Rudy Donte and maybe 1-2 other players almost always show up and give full effort while Ant/Randle/Naz and sometimes Jaden just disappear and I’m sure it’s pissing Rudy off.
I agree. What I see is Ant and Julius play lazy. Jaden says fuck it and mails it in as well. Then eventually Rudy does the same for a few games until he finally locks in again.
Then a huge chunk of the fan base excuses Ant and exclusively blames Rudy and Jaden ignoring the very real human element of why try when no one else does.
RE: human element I feel like the same can be said on the opposite end, starting with Ant and Julius seeing Gobert blow gimme layups / FTs. Probably pissing each other off with their one-way play

Ant plays highlight defense in my opinion. Very loud stocks but usually trying to conserve energy for the offensive end.
He’s truly an elite defender when he is fully locked in. Like, he took over completely against Toronto in the 4th.
He’s just rarely locked in defensively.

I think the bigger problem for me is not even his positioning or where he’s looking but his body language and feet there. If you look at his legs the entire clip he’s kind of just shuffling one foot at a time like he’s about to doodle on the ground and is caught flat footed when the pass hits his man and he realizes he has to close out. Even if they went into the key if he’s flat footed like that he’s going to be late.
This is a stupid low-light but also reminder that Luka is statistically a better defender than Ant, defense is just hard to quantify so people go off vibes

There’s no stat that measures defense well enough to definitively say “Luka is statistically a better defender than Ant”.
Yeah that’s why you look a lot of different stats instead of just one.
The fact that DBPM is part of this makes it irrelevant

But the effort is unacceptable. When he locks in he is an amazing defender, but it’s like he doesn’t care to try if the matchup doesn’t excite him. Dude needs to develop that killer instinct to want to kill everyone in front of him like he used to claim.

Players have their up and downs. Hard to say never.
But overall, when Kawhi’s available and in good form, it’s obvious that he’s better than Edwards. I would argue he’s better than Shai and Jokic if we factor in his defense. It’s no knock on those players. It’s just people criminally underrate how good Kawhi is because of all the weird bias from the aspiration stuff and unavailability.
I don’t know why Ant and a few others get a pass for being lazy mediocre at best defenders. Guys like Luka and Harden get killed for it. He’s not Trae on D but neither are they and they don’t get a pass.
