It has been 10 years since the League Office took action against the 76ers to stop “The Process”
Since this has happened teams are sitting out all-star and all-nba level players for huge sections of the season just in order to drop in the standings. The new lottery odds to combat tanking has teams trying to fall out of play-in contention for ping pong balls. Every year that goes by just seems to suggest that they had no larger plan to limit or to punish tanking. So why the Sixers? Every other team can do as they please but the sixers front office was replaced with Colangelos and league office personnel.
The most common sentiment on this topic is that it was too extreme of a tank, the sixers were far too bad of a team. I will try to cast reasonable doubt on this conclusion by pointing out some other things that were happening in the league at this time.
The Lakers averaged just 5 more wins per year and were top 3 in the draft lottery each season of the process.
The kings were in the midst of SEVEN seasons in a row under 30 wins with Demarcus Cousins on their team.
The Wolves hadnt been to the playoffs in 14 years.
These teams didnt need help. So why the Sixers? The second biggest talking point is that they messed with the money as a big market team. But lets take a closer look at that, here is the difference between the post iverson era, the process era, and the post process era in terms of attendance. There are 30 NBA teams.
Post iverson era:
2006 - 21st
2007 - 29th
2008 - 23rd
2009 - 23rd
2010 - 26th
2011 - 25th
2012 - 14th
2013 - 17th
Process Era:
2014 - 29th
2015 - 30th
2016 - 26th
Post Process Era:
2017 - 18th
2018 - 3rd
2019 - 1st
2020 - 1st
2021 - 2nd
2022 - 2nd
2023 - 2nd
2024 - 3rd
2025 - 20th
A striking pattern has emerged. The sixers are not a big draw unless they have star power. So why were they punished so harshly for “messing with the money” when they had been a dreadful draw for years? The three process years barely even stand out from their dreadful attendance of the Iguodala years. What does stand out though is the Embiid era packing the seats. The league got rewarded for doing the wrong thing and the sixers are still scrambling from the fallout. It really feels like the league made an overly emotional decision that really didn’t have a ton of merit behind it.
Note: I know attendance is not the end all be all of revenue and revenue sharing, this is just one way to analyze the situation that i found to be interesting.
