Joe Mazzulla on the moment between Hugo González and Norman Powell. Replay at the end.
The way this man instantly lights up when asked about the moment lol
Such a genuine smile from him, so funny
I love him, he’s awesome
It feels good when your friends see you
This guy is an underrated coach.
What he manages to get out of his guys is to get them to play with intensity.
I bet its the hardest Vuc has played in a hot minute. He looked a little lost/trying to adjust in the first half, but was huge in the 3rd quarter, working his ass off and dominating the paint offensively. Love how our culture makes you sink or swim with how hard you’re willing to work (Simons was great too)
Unfortunate case of play too good and you’re not getting paid here or play too bad so you definitely can’t be here. Happy for him though, he rehabbed his image and showed that he can play legit winning basketball and is a very willing learner when given the chance.
I coach youth sports and I try to instill in my kids that defense is just hard work and intensity. I was a mediocre player growing up, but I played hard all the time and took it personally if someone got an uncontested shot off. I love Joe for the same reason I loved playing defense. It’s just hard work and intensity, and I expect my players to hate to lose more than they love to win.
It sounds almost crazy to think that even in professional sports, still, just playing harder than your opponent can take you a long way towards winning.
True in most people’s lives and careers. It’s annoying at how true it is tbh because working harder than everyone else sucks lol
hate to lose more than they love to win
This line hit hard when it was used in Shoresy, still hits hard here.
If you get beaten, that is what it is. A reason to get better if nothing else. But to lose, no, fuck that. Hate to lose.
He’s so easily COTY
biased but i really think he’s the best coach in the league right now.
he has everything - great initial schemes, great adjustments, players completely bought in to the identity of the team, strong relationships w the players, etc. so glad we got him
I personally think he’s better than Ime and I was a big admirer of Ime
His only weakness, IMO, is ATO plays. For some reason, he hasn’t picked Brad’s mind about all the great ATO plays Brad used to draw up for the Cs.
He’s widely regarded as one of the best coaches in the league.
Yea but his approach is like Tim Robinson lmao. He’s just too excited. He’s too rough on the rope. He pulls on the rope. He wrenches on the rope
Mazzulla probably watched that replay and wondered why nobody tried to hit a rolling somersault to contest the shot. He doesn’t see a ‘moment,’ he sees a missed opportunity for psychological warfare.
Prime Marcus Smart would have loved this guy.
Him and Marcus would essentially be that fight scene in the first Sherlock Holmes movie, “crack ribs, dislocate jaw, discombobulate” but that’s Joe’s name for plays
No matter how many likes you get for this, it’ll be underrated.
Except, I don’t think Joe liked Smart on the roster. Obviously not saying anything about the person, but I don’t think Smart was his cup of tea
I fucking love it!
I hope Mazzulla never wins COY because being one of the best coaches in the league but never winning COY would be on brand for him.
Celtics fans would be 1000x more upset about that scenario than Mazulla ever would be.
Nobody cares.
COTY for basketball is the most fraudulent award in sports. Erik Spoelstra has never won a COTY and Dwane Casey (got fired two months later) won over Brad Stevens when he coached a 5’9 PG, Amir Johnson, Avery Bradley, and friends to a 1 seed. Those are only two examples there’s countless more.

Pretty sure he is quoting Mazzulla
It’s mainly about who won it instead. Fuckin Dwayne Casey who got fired a month later.
But think of how unhinged the acceptance speech would be
Joe the only mf to give a rejectance speech.
Mazzulla might do a boilerplate acceptance speech just to f_ck with everyone.
I’d bet money there would be a religious rant that went on for an uncomfortably long time
“Illegal screen”
*blank face, while also taking note of the nearest exits & strategic vantage points in the room so that he can dominate any situation
“…This award isn’t about me. It’s about obsession. It’s about watching The Town for the 11th time and still thinking, “Yeah, they should’ve spaced better on that last job.”
It’s about telling grown men that love is actually just accountability with louder yelling….”
The Cs have the third best record in the league down 4 rotation players from last year including their all-nba star, I can’t be convinced he shouldn’t be the favorite. Our lineups have been filled with guys that warmed the bench last year in Walsh, Garza, Queta, and Scheierman.
It’s actually 5 players lol. JT, KP, Jrue, Al, Luke. Absolutely crazy that we’re this good!
Bickerstaff is still the Vegas favorite. COY voters love year-to-year increase in wins and tend to downplay other circumstances. It’s partly why Spo has never won one.
Give it to Bickerstaff. He’s done a great job and COYs have had a terrible track record for keeping their jobs.
He’d be genuinely mad if he won
Agree, but the real reason is to not get fired the year or two after
“I envy Hugo. He doesn’t have Sam Cassell getting in his way when he wants to fight.”
Valid hustle from Hugo. Powell needs to watch his anger
Fr he was just going for the ball what Powell expect?
Nobody is buying that bravado from Norman Powell either
The way he’s saying WASSUP has me fucking dead
Very on brand for the Heat fake toughness
He forgot to give him the Forest Whitaker eye though.
Yep, like Erik
My favorite part about this is a couple of plays later Pritchard hit a 3 on his face and he got mad so he tried to iso on Pritchard but Pritchard tipped the ball away
COTY. NUFF SAID
The moment he heard the word HUGO, just lit the shit out of his face. What a psycho!!
Bro rarely smile but instantly do when asked about physical confrontation.
I like this guy. I bet he’s out in the ufc subreddit talking how about Ilia vs Islam is the way to go
Just me?? Or does Mazzulla have crazy eyes?!? 🤪😂👍. But love that he’s our coach and that the team fights for him and offensive rebounds!! ❤️👍
May chaos take the world!
In soccer terms, this guy is the perfect amalgamation of Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola: the tough style and loyalty inspiration of the first and the obsession for his craft and tactical knack of the second.
Also, they all have the same first name, and they all are a treasure in the press room.
Insane how it happened…
I hate having beef with Mia they have nothing to lose
