Yep, there are certain areas where “gambling” is useful: it’s good to let people bet on soybean futures, for instance, lets companies do some useful things. And stocks and lots of other assets, of course, have a “gambling” aspect to them that has at least some merit and is a nearly inevitable side effect of their very existence.

But most zero sum “gambling” just isn’t useful. We don’t need prediction markets for who will win the Democratic primary in FL-11 or for whether certain words will get used in a speech.

Opening up the floodgates on gambling seemed at the time to many like a benign example of “good libertarianism.” People were doing it anyway, why not legalize it?

I already have so many friends with serious gambling addictions, and most of them won’t admit it, except for a few who have. When you can gamble from an app on your phone, it’s already dangerous. Now they’ve taken it even further by letting people bet on literally anything. You can bet on the weather, on breaking news, on real life unfolding in real time.

This is insane. It’s pure greed, capitalism completely run amok, and it’s going to cause real harm, especially to younger generations and people who are already vulnerable. It’s disgusting.

And one of those owners ‘miraculously’ won the lottery after trading an MVP level player in his prime for peanuts. The league is suspect as heck.

Over 90% of Kalshi’s volume is on sports betting. So, it is a sportsbook that pretends it isn’t. States with legalized gambling have very high taxes on the profits. Kalshi does not pay those taxes, and is therefore costing those states money. Many states without legalized gambling will be mad that it’s happening under this prediction market guise without consumer protections, without their share of the tax revenue, or against their morals(in the case of some red states).

Kalshi is just a very new thing, and governments move slow. Plus, the Trump admin is friendly to all this, and people don’t want to pick a fight with him over it.

That’s the issue. Kalshi actievly promotes inside trading. They ain’t casino or gambling app: they are worse. Because there’s no house. There’s fee. So house doesn’t need to ensure its winning: it just need to ensure there’s a game.

Kalshi and Polymarket are not casinos. They are not sportsbooks. They are not regulated in the same way, at all.

Kalshi and Polymarket do not have those mechanisms in place like the actual sportsbooks regulated by states’ gaming commissions.

Kalshi and Polymarket make money the same way poker rooms makes money - a rake. So a bunch of people put money in, Kalshi and Polymarket take a cut, and the rest gets paid out to the winners.

Until just over a decade ago, all the major sports leagues had researched and studied sports betting and determined it was incredibly dangerous to their brands and consumer trust in their products. So much so that the commissioners of sports leagues used to go under oath and argue very strongly against the idea that sports betting be made legal.

So, yeah, this isn’t a “reddit sports fans” thing. It’s a there are no guardrails in society anymore and there certainly are no morals anymore…thing.
