The Amen Thompson at PG experiment for Houston should end and will limit how far the Rockets go.
As generationally athletic and smart on the defensive end that Amen is, it’s clear that he does not have what it takes to run as the Point Guard for a team who’s contention title is right now with Durant on the team and not a few years from now.
His lack of consistent playmaking and absolutely horrid spacing thanks to his lack of shooting limits what the Rockets can do on offense and this will especially be exploited once the playoffs begin. Teams that are very defensively sound and have a big man threat (such as Gobert and Wemby) will counter his athleticism at the basket and play off of him. Because his playmaking is inconsistent, he’ll either make mistakes passing or will be forced to shoot a midrange.
If Ime and the front office wanted to ensure a playoff push, they should have pursued a point guard at the trade deadline or even when they found out FVV was out for the year, because as frustrating as FVV can be, he was able to run the Rocket’s offense last year to the #2 seed. Thompson flourished much better as a SF last year, his natural position which also allowed him to be a defensive monster and excel at second chance opportunities.
