Giannis and the Bucks had a conversation about his future. He said he didn’t necessarily want to leave, but if he were to go he’d prefer to go to the Knicks. So the Bucks and Knicks had some preliminary conversations, but they were far apart and neither side was super serious. Never went anywhere, or was close to going anywhere. Then we get ~30 games into the season, Giannis is openly frustrated at how shitty the team is, so we start taking calls from anybody. Don’t like the packages being offered, so we hold pat and don’t do a trade. Depending who you ask, there may not have been any package we were actually going to take and it was essentially an exercise in gauging value.
That’s it. Everything else is speculation. All this “Giannis wants to go to this team, Bucks FO wants this package, this star is trying to recruit him, these teams will give this up” is unprovable nothingness. We have no idea what’s true and what’s not and we never will.
Giannis has a history of firing subliminals at Shams based on his reporting, and prior to at least a couple of years ago Shams definitely did not have any strong Giannis/Bucks sources (didn’t manage to break the Giannis extension news despite it being the biggest story of the offseason) but we’re to believe that Giannis and the Bucks are at fault for feeding him all of this “information”?
