It’s objectively not even a good offer. The warriors would have Giannis plus another $150 million or so in cap space with Steph, Jimmy, and Draymond gone. Those firsts might be useless, there is no guarantee the warriors will be bad.

The Bucks have averaged 51.5 wins/season since they won their title, before this season, and won their division 3x. Those are good teams.

But if I were the Bucks and I’m trading a generational player, I at least want a young star to build around. Only getting draft picks in a trade is not the direction I would go. I would want a young star in addition to draft picks. That’s the only guarantee in the deal.

If the goal here for the Bucks is, let’s just keep Giannis and have fun till he retires here and Gianni’s is cool with that, then great. But if that’s not the plan, under these new apron rules teams aren’t really offering 4 FRPs for a superstar anymore. And the teams that have picks to burn (OKC, Jazz, etc) aren’t really interested in trading them for Giannis because they either don’t need to, he’s not on the right timeline as them, or they understand how value draft picks are under these collective bargaining agreement rules.

Draymond and Kuminga are negative assets. They just had to dump Kuminga for an expiring.

And the thing about those picks is that you don’t know where they’re going to land. You have to operate as they’re late first rounders. You can’t make a move that hinges on your opponent making a mistake.

The best asset in the Bane trade was thought to be the Suns pick this year. Now it is definitely not.

They could be. They could also turn out to be garbage. Not worth the risk since the picks would be essentially all the value in the trade. If there were some good young talent heading back Milwaukee’s way, then it gets easier to not worry about how those picks turn out.

The reason teams trade so many picks in these situations is because superstars are so valuable that it’s almost impossible to make a fair offer that is anything other than ‘all of them.’

Giannis is in the Bucks atm in a much weaker conference and their current picks are very valuable.

A Giannis that is 3-4 years older and even likely more injury prone by then isn’t making the picks that less valuable.

He’s going to be 35 before the 2030 draft and he has a growing history of calf injuries. Those 2030-2032 unprotected firsts and swaps project to be very valuable when you consider how reliant he is on athleticism and how physical his style of play is.

Giannis’s health clearly isnt going to hold up. He misses a lot of games already. I would still value those picks highly. 

Giannis is an uber athlete at 31 years old he doesn’t have many good years left either.

This is just it. There are no guarantees that long-dated picks are going to be as valuable as you project them to be. If they turn out to be late first rounders then you’ve just spent 4-6 years waiting for nothing.

The alternative is… a better offer than 4 picks of which 2 will be bad and 2 of unknown value + Kuminga + the bad contract of DG.

They can’t keep him forever but they don’t have to trade him either. The GM can’t give away Giannis on the possibility that it may turn into great picks half a decade from now. That guy won’t be running the team by then most likely. If you can’t get some combination of your own picks back, picks from consistently bad teams, and good young players, it’s better to just drag it out until the contract expires, because the only things that give the Bucks GM any kind of job security right now is Giannis OR a really great package in return for Giannis.
